Treatment outcome of new smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients in Hamadan, Iran: A registry-based cross-sectional study
Conclusion Treatment success rate in our study was 83.1%, which is slightly lower than the success target set by World Health Organization (WHO). Key determinants of poor treatment success rate, such as male gender, and not having hospitalization history during the treatment period, should be considered in efforts aimed to improve the treatment outcome in the management of TB. Comparison of two prognostic models for acute pulmonary embolism
Conclusion (1) There is an agreement to great extent in risk stratification of APE patients by PESI and ESC prognostic models, where mortality rate is increased among high risk classes of both models, (2) ESC prognostic model is more accurate than PESI model in mortality prediction of APE patients especially in the high risk class, (3) echocardiographic evidence of RVD and elevated plasma BNP can help to identify APE patients at increased risk of adverse short-term outcome and (4) integration of RVD assessment by echocardiography and BNP to clinical findings improves the prognostic value of ESC model. The metabolic syndrome in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Publication date: Available online 30 May 2016 Source:Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis Author(s): Neveen Mahmoud Ameen, Randa Salah El Deen Mohamed, Nabila Ibrahim Abd El Mageed, Mohamed Hussein Abd EL Wahab Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has extrapulmonary effects that seem to be related with systemic inflammation. The relationship between metabolic syndrome which is an important determinant of systemic inflammation in the general population and COPD is still not clear. The impact of smoking on inflammatory biomarkers in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Conclusions The circulating levels of the inflammatory markers hs-CRP and TNF-alpha are significantly elevated in patients with stable COPD and these biomarkers could be used as predictor factors for severity of inflammation in COPD patients. Longitudinal studies evaluating the effects of smoking cessation on bronchial and systemic inflammation are needed to allow better understanding of these relationships and their consequences. Sleep pattern changes in patients with connective tissue diseases
Conclusion Obstructive sleep apnea is commonly associated with CTD patients. Co-existence of OSA in CTD patients may influence the disease activity and the level of circulating inflammatory markers. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Ultrasound guided pleural brushing: A new method for obtaining pleural specimen in malignant effusion
Conclusions Ultrasound-guided pleural brushing is a new method for obtaining pleural specimens. It is a simple and relatively safe procedure. This technique provides additional diagnostic yield in malignant pleural effusion. We recommend it beside others in our diagnostic practice for suspicious malignant effusion especially when thoracoscopy is not available. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Assessment of the effect of bariatric surgery on severe obstructive sleep apnea patients not tolerating CPAP therapy
Conclusion: sleeve gastrectomy can be an alternate option of treatment for severe OSA patients who are not tolerating CPAP and surgery may cure the disease or at least improve compliance to CPAP by decreasing the needed pressure to control OSA. Assessment of diagnostic accuracy of Gene Xpert MTB/RIF in diagnosis of suspected retreatment pulmonary tuberculosis patients
Conclusion Gene Xpert MTB/RIF is a sensitive, specific and accurate test for both diagnosis of retreatment MTB and rifampicin resistance. Finally the authors recommend restandardization of reference test with Gene Xpert MTB/RIF to obtain more valid results. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Diagnostic utility of dynamic CT in tracheomalacia in COPD patients
Conclusion The results of this study clarify that a significant subgroup of patients with a reported clinical diagnosis of COPD has features consistent with tracheomalacia on dynamic CT scanning of the chest. This indicates that tracheomalacia may be a hidden comorbidity in COPD. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Correlation of high resolution CT patterns with pulmonary function tests in patients with interstitial lung diseases
Conclusion HRCT patterns and degree of lung involvement of ILDs correlate with pulmonary function parameters. Lung volumes are lower in fibrotic lesion regardless the degree of lung involvement, while DLCO among different patterns were dependent upon the degree of lung involvement. Restrictive pulmonary dysfunction correlate with gas exchange in fibrotic pattern while in ground glass one, gas exchange is independent on lung volumes.
