Multiple Risk Factor Interventions for Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in LMIC
This study sought to determine the effectiveness of multiple risk factor interventions aimed at modifying major cardiovascular risk factors for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). We searched electronic databases for randomized controlled trials of health promotion interventions to achieve behavior change. The pooled effect indicated a reduction in systolic blood pressure ( −6.72 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −9.82 to −3.61; I2 = 91%), diastolic blood pressure (−4.40 mm Hg; 95% CI: −6.47 to −2.34; I2 = 92%), body mass index (−0.76 kg/m2; 95% CI: ...

Perspectives from NHLBI Global Health Think Tank Meeting for Late Stage (T4) Translation Research
Almost three-quarters (74%) of all the noncommunicable disease burden is found within low- and middle-income countries. In September 2014, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute held a Global Health Think Tank meeting to obtain expert advice and recommendations for addressing compelling scientific questions for late stage (T4) research —research that studies implementation strategies for proven effective interventions—to inform and guide the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's global health research and training efforts. Relatives' Presence During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
The question of whether or not to allow family to be present during resuscitation is relevant to everyday professional health care assistance, but it remains largely unexplored in the medical literature. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)

OC01_01 Increased Mortality and Shortened Life Span of Heart Rate at 80-99 Beats/Min: Assessing the Benefits of Physical Activity From a Prospective Cohort of 515,303 Individuals
Resting heart rate (HR), an independent risk factor for all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD), has not been universally recognized as an important CVD risk factor in healthy subjects. Heart rate at 80-99 beats/min has been implicated with increased CVD risk but no guideline exists as to how this risk can be modified. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)

OC01_02 The Effect of Overall and Types of Physical Activity on Mortality and Cardiovascular Events in 17 Countries: Results From the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiologic (PURE) Study
Physical inactivity accounts for 6% of global cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden. Studies from high income countries (HIC) have reported inverse associations of physical activity (PA) with all-cause mortality and CVD. It is not clear whether the protective effects observed in HIC is apparent in countries with lower incomes. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)

OC01_04 Mortality Trends in Kazakhstan During and After the Financial Crisis (2008-2012): Associations With Alcohol Consumption
There is increasing evidence that population health is negatively affected by economic crises. On the other hand, some studies have found that people may engage in healthier behavior, in particular lower alcohol consumption although the latter effect seems to be present only when downturns are short-lived and not severe. OC02_03 Systemic-To-Pulmonary Artery Shunts as Emergency Treatment in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the National Institute of Cardiology “Ignacio Chavez” in the Period 2003-2014
The Systemic-pulmonary artery shunts is considered the most often urgent surgery in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease, and its mortality risk is similar to the arterial switch operation. Post surgical care focus on keeping continuous pulmonary flow rate. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)

OC02_04 Penicillin Compliance in the National Rheumatic Fever Program in Samoa
Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease remains major cause of morbidity and premature death in Samoa. IM Penicillin has been shown to be very effective in secondary prophylaxis of RF and preventing the deterioration of RHD. The new National Rheumatic Fever Program in Samoa was started in 2007. The Echocardiogram screening program in schools started in 2008. The prevalence rate for definite RHD from 5-13 years old was 1.43%. Prior to 2006, the overall IM Penicillin compliance rate was < 50%. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)

OC02_05 Mitral Valvuloplasty in Rheumatic Heart Disease: The Experience of Mozambique
Rheumatic fever is a non-suppurative sequelae of throat infections caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci. Among its clinical presentations, the cardiac lesions are the most severe and the mitral valve is the most affected, causing many times mitral regurgitation. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)

OC02_07 Genome-Wide Association Study of Susceptibility to Rheumatic Heart Disease in Oceania: Preliminary Results
Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among children and young adults across much of the developing world. Current understanding of the disease ’s pathogenesis is unrefined compounding limited preventative strategies. (Source: CVD Prevention and Control)
