Radiofrequency Ablation of Small Renal Masses: Outcomes, Complications and Effects on Renal Function
Introduction:To describe oncological outcomes, effects on renal function and complications with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of T1 renal tumors in an 8-year experience.Materials and Methods:A retrospective study of RFA in 89 consecutive patients between 2005 and 2013 was undertaken. Those with metastatic disease, incomplete follow-up, genetic pre-disposition to renal tumors and biopsy proven benign pathology were excluded, with 79 patients meeting inclusion criteria. Data was collected on demographics, oncological outcomes, complications and effects on renal function. Results:We demonstrate 94% disease-free survival at med...

Trans-Urethral Snare of Bladder Tumor (TUSnBT) with Stone Basket Retrieval: A Novel Time-Saving Technique in the Endoscopic Management of Papillary Bladder Lesions
Conclusion:TUSnBT with stone retrieval basket retrieval is a feasible method in selected papillary bladder lesions, and may be coupled with standard TURBT resection techniques. This method is less time consuming and would prove beneficial in select lesions. It may also be beneficial to assist with reducing the resection time or inadvertent bladder perforation encountered during the conventional TURBT.Curr Urol 2017;11:189-195 (Source: Current Urology)

Adhesive Bowel Obstruction Following Urologic Surgery: Improved Outcomes with Early Intervention
Objective:To describe the long-term incidence of adhesive bowel obstruction following major urologic surgery, and the effect of early surgery on perioperative outcomes. Methods:The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient Databases for California and Florida (2006-2011) were used to identify major urologic oncologic surgery patients. Subsequent adhesive bowel obstruction admissions were identified and Kaplan-Meier time-to-event analysis was performed. Early surgery for bowel obstruction was defined as occurring on-or-before hospital-day four. The effects of early surgery on postoperative minor/moderate compli...

Perioperative Management of New Oral Anticoagulants in Urological Surgery
This article demonstrates the patient and procedural variability that must be taken into account in the perioperative management of the anticoagulated patient. While the time to peak onset and half-life of NOACs can aid in determining the interval of interruption of anticoagulation, the risks of thrombosis and bleeding must be assessed before the decision to stop anticoagulation. This article takes into account the evidence available on NOACs in urological surgery in order to inform the perioperative management of these medications and to propose guidelines to aid in clinical decision making. In attempting this, we address...

A 26-Year-Old Male with a 14-Year History of Left Intermittent Testicular Torsion Treated with Self-Manual Reduction
We present a case of a 26-year-old man with a 14-year history of intermittent testicular pain presenting to the urology clinic for elective surgical evaluation. He reported monthly symptoms for many years and had learned to manually reduce the torsion with each episode. Diagnosis of intermittent testicular torsion was made based on patient history and treatment with bilateral orchiopexy resulted in complete symptom resolution and without any loss of testicular function.Curr Urol 2017;11:166-168 (Source: Current Urology)

Incidental Finding of Urethral Diverticulum in a Woman with History of Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections
We present an incidental finding and management of a urethral diverticulum containing mixed composition of struvite and ammonium urate stones. Status post sleeve gastrectomy, patient presented to our bariatric clinic with epigastric pain associated with nausea and vomiting. A computed tomography scan was performed to rule out any complications of the procedure in which urethral stones were reported contained within a diverticulum. This finding, in retrospect, correlated with patient's past history of recurrent urinary tract infections. Over all, urethral diverticulum with struvite stones is a rare entity with few reported ...

A Novel Vesicoscopic Bladder Wall Suture Fixation Technique to Aid Endoscopic Vesicostomy Button Insertion
Conclusion:This simple fixation technique is easily performed using materials found in every urology suite. It also avoids the skills required with other previously reported fixation suture techniques, and can also be utilized for bladder fixation in cases of vesicoscopic laparoscopic or robotic assisted laparoscopic procedures.Curr Urol 2017;11:157-162 (Source: Current Urology)

Experience of a Tertiary-Level Urology Center in the Clinical Urological Events of Rare and Very Rare Incidence. I. Surgical Never Events: 2. Intracorporeally-Retained Urological Surgical Items
Conclusion:Retained urological surgical items are surgical never events that result from forgetfulness or technical surgical human errors. Their sequels can be potentially fatal, but they are preventable and can be significantly reduced.Curr Urol 2017;11:151-156 (Source: Current Urology)

< b > < i > Paris Polyphylla < /i > < /b > -Derived Saponins Inhibit Growth of Bladder Cancer Cells by Inducing Mutant P53 Degradation While Up-Regulating CDKN1A Expression
Conclusion:PPVY saponins activate DNA damage response pathway, degrade mutant p53 and stimulate CDKN1A expression, thereby inhibiting BC cell growth. Given their poor absorption via oral administration, PPVY saponins may be applicable for intravesical instillations in BC treatment.Curr Urol 2017;11:131-138 (Source: Current Urology)

Ureteric Stent Use - Part of the Solution and Part of the Problem
Conclusion:Stent complications are the complex outcome of interplay between the foreign body and the collecting system environment, influenced by the nature and timing of surgery. Longer stent dwelling times are associated with increased complications rates, especially in patients with significant comorbidities.Curr Urol 2017;11:126-130 (Source: Current Urology)

Overactive Bladder Syndrome: Evaluation and Management
Overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome is a chronic medical condition which has a major influence on the quality of life in a significant amount of the population. OAB affects performance of daily activities and has an estimated prevalence of 16.5%. Many sufferers do not seek medical help. Moreover, many family physicians and even gynecologists are not familiar with this issue. Usually patients suffer from OAB in advanced age. Nocturia is reported as the most bothersome symptom in the elderly population. The aim of our review was to discuss all aspects of this challenging disorder and suggest tools for assessment and management...
