Chronic lymphocytic leukemia with clinical debut as neurological involvement: a rare phenomenon and the need for better predictive markers
ConclusionsThese data suggest that the expression profile of CD49d and CD82 may represent potential biomarkers for patients with increased propensity of CNS involvement. Moreover, this study illustrates the critical need for a better mechanistic understanding of how specific adhesion proteins regulate the interactions between CLL cells and various tissue sites. Effect of malaria infection on hematological profiles of people living with human immunodeficiency virus in Gambella, southwest Ethiopia
ConclusionsFindings suggest that the prevalence of anemia and thrombocytopenia were significantly higher in the malaria and HIV coinfected participants than the HIV mono-infected participants. Mean values of hematological profiles were significantly different in the two groups. Future prospective studies with larger sample size from other settings are needed to substantiate the findings. Prevalence of anemia in renal insufficiency among HIV infected patients initiating ART at a hospital in Northeast Ethiopia
ConclusionHIV infected patients with renal insufficiency had a higher prevalence of anemia compared to patients with normal renal function. Thus, screening of these patients for anemia and renal insufficiency at base line should be critical not only to reduce mortality but also to improve clinical outcomes. (Source: BMC Hematology)

Sickle-cell disease in febrile children living in a rural village of Madagascar and association with malaria and respiratory infections
ConclusionThe prevalence of SCD among under-five children presenting with fever was high in the study population. No association was found between SCT and malaria but few viruses, especially parechovirus, seem to play an important role in the occurrence of pneumoniae among SCD patients. (Source: BMC Hematology)

Anaemia and its association with month and blood phenotype in blood donors in Fako division, Cameroon
ConclusionThis study revealed a high prevalence of anaemia which translates to a high rate of donor deferral as a result of anaemia in the study area. The prevalence of anaemia was observed to be associated with the blood phenotype and the month, but not the season (dry or rainy). Further studies will be needed to ascertain the aetiology and associated factors for anaemia in blood donors in the study area. (Source: BMC Hematology)

Prevalence of transfusion transmissible infections in blood donors of Pakistan
ConclusionA substantial percentage of the blood donor ’s harbored transfusion-transmitted infections. Prevention of TTIs should be the main goal right now. There is a need for stringent selection of blood donors with the emphasis on getting voluntary donations and comprehensive screening of donor’s blood for TTIs using standard methods to ensure th e safety of blood recipient. Adherence to treatment regimen and bleeding rates in a prospective cohort of youth and young adults on low-dose daily prophylaxis for severe hemophilia A
ConclusionsThis prospective longitudinal study in youth and young adults shows that LDDP may be associated with low ABRs, adequate adherence and HRQoL comparable to previously reported. (Source: BMC Hematology)

Knowledge, attitude and practice towards blood donation and associated factors among adults in Debre Markos town, Northwest Ethiopia
ConclusionThe prevalence of knowledge and practice of blood donation is found to be higher compared to similar study conducted in Mekelle, whereas the level of attitude is found to be lower. The finding of this study also justified any possible interventions on the independent predictors. There should be a regularly scheduled awareness creation and voluntary blood donation campaigns organized at the community level to utilize potential blood donors. (Source: BMC Hematology)

Chronic Epstein Barr virus infection leading to classical Hodgkin lymphoma
Conclusion EBV-related lymphomagenesis is complex and through the utilization of its nuclear antigens and latent membrane proteins the virus is able to shape the microenvironment to promote the various pathologies seen. Moreover, the diagnosis of EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorders might be challenging when they present in immunocompetent individuals. Our case also represents an emphatic reminder for clinicians that spontaneous regression of lymphadenopathy is not exclusive of low-grade lymphoid malignancies. (Source: BMC Hematology)
