Validation of ROPScore to predict retinopathy of prematurity among very low birth weight preterm infants in a southern Brazilian population
Conclusions: The ROPScore was useful to identify preterm babies at risk for retinopathy of prematu rity. In this population, the ROPScore detected all patients at risk for any stage retinopathy of prematurity and severe retinopathy of prematurity. The ROPScore values in this study were similar to those previously described, thereby successfully validating the ROPScore for early detection of retin opathy of prematurity in very low birth weight preterm infants.RESUMO Objetivos: Avaliar a sensibilidade, especificidade e os valores de pontos de corte do ROPScore, um escore baseado em fatores de risco cumulativos capaz de prev...

A three-dimensional printed photopolymer resin implant for orbital rehabilitation for evisceration
Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first phase-1 clinical study to certify the biocompatibility of the Fullcure resin for orbital implants in humans. The 3D printing technology permits fast and accurate production of implants for this purpose.RESUMO Objetivos: Avaliar a biocompatibilidade das esferas produzidas por impressora tridimensional em eviscera ção.

Factors associated with vision-related quality of life in Brazilian patients with glaucoma
Conclusion: The standard automated perimetry mean deviation and the visual acuity of the better and worse eyes were associated with lower quality of life in Brazilian patients with glaucoma. Quality of life was mostly highly associated with the standard automated perimetry mean deviation of the worse eye.RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o impacto da acuidade visual, danos no campo visual e outros fatores na qualidade de vida em pacientes brasileiros com glaucoma. M étodos: Este foi um estudo transversal prospectivo incluindo 49 pacientes com glaucoma selecionados com base na presença de defeitos por perimetria automatizada p...

Whole-exome sequencing in familial keratoconus: the challenges of a genetically complex disorder
Conclusion: Our findings show that a complete genotype-phenotype correlation could not be identified, suggesting that keratoconus is a genetically heterogeneous disease. In addition, we believe that whole-exome sequencing-based segregation analysis is probably not the best strategy for identifying variants in families with isolated keratoconus.RESUMO Objetivos: As causas gen éticas subjacentes do ceratocone são essencialmente desconhecidas. Aqui, realizamos o sequenciamento de todo exoma de duas famílias brasileiras com ceratocone. Métodos: O sequenciamento total do exoma foi realizado em 6 indivíduos com ceratocone...

Effects of antibiotics and antiseptics on conjunctival bacterial flora in patients undergoing intravitreal injections
ABSTRACT This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of using preservative-free artificial tears versus preserved lubricants for the treatment of dry eyes in Universidade Federal de Alagoas (PROSPERO 2018 CRD42018089933). Online databases were searched (LILACS, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and CENTRAL) from inception to April 2018; references from included papers were also searched. The following keywords were used: lubricants OR artificial tears OR artificial tears, lubricants AND dry eye OR dry eye syndrome OR syndromes, dry eye OR dry eyes. Unilateral acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy in a patient with a strongly positive purified protein derivative test
ABSTRACT A 27-year-old man presented with a complaint of decreased visual acuity in the right eye. Best-corrected visual acuity was 20/60 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye. Right eye fundoscopy revealed mild vitritis, multifocal yellowish lesions, and macular serous retinal detachment. Left eye evaluation was normal. Acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy was diagnosed in the right eye. Complementary exams revealed a strong reaction to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis purified protein derivative test, thus treatment for tuberculosis was initiated. Baseline fluorescein angiography of the right eye ...

Extensive bulbar conjunctival Kaposi’s sarcoma as initial symptom of human immunodeficiency virus
ABSTRACT Here, we present a case in which extensive bulbar conjunctival Kaposi ’ s sarcoma was the initial presentation of human immunodeficiency virus in a 36-year-old man. The patient had a 3-month history of recurrent self-limited inferior conjunctiva hyperemia in the right eye, and presented with a painless bullous lesion in the right inferior bulbar conjunctiva persisting for 15 days. Surgical incision biopsy was performed at five locations and revealed a pattern compatible with Kaposi ’ s sarcoma. Serologic testing was positive for human immunodeficiency virus; however, the patient had no other symptoms, or knowl...

Phacoemulsification and 1% atropine eye drops for treatment of antimetropic congenital microcoria associated with cataracts
ABSTRACT A rare case of bilateral congenital microcoria associated with antimetropia in a 47-year-old man is here described. The patient presented with a chief complaint of progressive vision loss in his right eye over the past five years. A slit-lamp examination and ultrasound biomicroscopy confirmed congenital microcoria and cataracts. Phacoemulsification was performed using an iris expansion device and the anterior capsule was stained using the “ trypan down under ” technique. Preoperative considerations, the surgical approach, and postoperative management are discussed.RESUMO Um caso raro de microcoria cong ênita...

Bilateral metastases to the extraocular muscles from small cell lung carcinoma
We report a case of bilateral extraocular muscle metastases from a small cell lung carcinoma and provide a review of the relevant literature. A 56-year-old smoker presented with proptosis, motility changes, and a relative afferent pupillary defect of the left eye, with a previous history of a small cell lung carcinoma. An orbital computerized tomography scan revealed a mass restricted to the left medial rectus. An incisional biopsy confirmed metastasis. Visual acuity of the left eye decreased rapidly, and right globe proptosis became evident. Orbital magnetic resonance imaging at two months follow-up showed marked left orb...
