Handicap visible  : de la reconnaissance du stigmate et du déni de déviance à la revendication de droits
This article brings new insight into the relationship between disability studies and the sociology of handicap as “deviance” and “stigma”. Disability studies grew up in a tight connection with the disability rights movement, but one of their roots was the new way of conceiving delinquency, addiction, madness, homosexuality, and handicap, which emerged in the 1960s. Eliot Freidson (1966) shifted the attention from the “disabled”, treated as patients to rehabilitate, to “handicap makers”. The relevant question was then: which are the professional jurisdictions of specialists appointed to “cure” disabled p...

Close encounters: “Monstrous” bodies and literary knowledge in early modern France
Publication date: Available online 13 January 2017 Source:ALTER - European Journal of Disability Research / Revue Européenne de Recherche sur le Handicap Author(s): Timothy Hampton In this essay, I study a series of moments from early modern literature in which characters confront “monstrous” bodies or abnormal bodies. I study how these scenes raise issues about the reading of the non-normal body. I trace the ways in which the interpretation of the non-normal body poses problems for fiction, and for the relationship between epistemological authority, on the one hand, and the knowledge generated by literature, on th...

Plurality and continuity —Understanding self-identity of persons with intellectual disability
The objective of this article is to explore the complexity and continuity of self-identities of persons with intellectual disability. This is done by close reading of four life stories. The findings are that intellectually disabled people's self-identities are basically plural and fluid. A fruitful approach to understanding this plurality is given by “positioning theory” developed by Harré & Langenhove. We analyze the subject's sense of continuity in terms of our own concept of “inner dialogue”. Our point of departure is a review of literature with special focus on multiple identities. We distinguish betwe...

Dix ans de droit à la scolarisation en France, quels changements ? Point de vue des enseignants référents
This article analyses the views held by the teacher-referents on the changing framework of schooling over the last 10 years. It is a question of understanding the relationship between the general legislative principles which commit France to an inclusive education and these applications in practice. In order to demonstrate our point, we are relying on responses given to a questionnaire sent to all the representatives of this new profession in 2012–2013. These answers are illustrated by semi-directive interviews conducted with around 20 teacher-referents. (Source: ALTER - European Journal of Disability Research)
