“I’m too old to think five years ahead”. Parent carers of adult children with intellectual disabilities in Sweden
This article analyses eight parents’ stories about living with their adult children with intellectual disabilities. They discuss their daily lives and future thoughts concerning their children's living situation. The analysis is conducted from a perspective in which age is seen as a social practice and power structure. The parents in this study violate several norms through their choices. Their daily lives continue to be characterized by the adult children's needs and activities. The parents are aging and the adult children get older, but household chores and responsibilities continue to be distributed in the same way. T...

Now you see it, now you don ’t: A discourse view of disability and multidisciplinarity
Publication date: Available online 1 June 2017 Source:ALTER - European Journal of Disability Research / Revue Européenne de Recherche sur le Handicap Author(s): Jan Grue Disability is increasingly salient as a word and increasingly heterogeneous as a category. Multiple interest groups and professions define disability in different ways, making it impossible to achieve a unitary theoretical definition or singular model-explanation of disability as a phenomenon. It is in the interest both of disability scholars and disabled people to acknowledge the multiple understandings of disability, and to appropriate ways of thinki...

Publication date: Available online 30 January 2017 Source:ALTER - European Journal of Disability Research / Revue Européenne de Recherche sur le Handicap Author(s): Rosemarie Garland-Thomson Julia Pastrana was a Mexican woman whose “extraordinary” appearance led to her being displayed throughout Europe and America, first as a freak, then as a specimen. Recently, she was reburied in her birthplace. This essay considers the ways that Pastrana's display both reinforces and challenges the lines between the self and other, human and non-human, ordinary and extraordinary that such spectacles rely upon. It further suggest...
