Do disability pension awards have a causal impact on recipients’ marital stability? Evidence from the Danish Social Security Programme
Publication date: Available online 9 August 2018Source: AlterAuthor(s): Siddhartha Baviskar, Kirstine Bengtsson, Steen BengtssonAbstractWhat is the effect of a disability pension (DP) on the recipients’ marital stability if we keep the recipients’ health constant? Previous research shows that marital stability may be challenged when one partner acquires a disability. However, the effects of permanent benefits such as DP on recipients’ marital stability have not yet been examined. We contribute to the literature by investigating this question using data from Denmark and estimating the causal effect of DP using instrum...

Role of the “differently-abled” researcher: Challenges and solutions in inclusive research
This article examines the role of the “differently-abled” researcher in facilitating inclusive research with adults (age 16 and older) with intellectual disabilities living in Sami areas of Norway. Topics discussed include challenges that may arise while conducting such research due to the nature of the project (externally-funded pre-existing project), methods applied (quantitative) and people involved (some being of Sami background and some with intellectual disabilities). In this study, for example, the research sponsors had pre-determined both the topic of investigation (i.e. living conditions) and the method (i.e. ...

Quelle expérience pour les élèves présentant des troubles du comportement et orientés vers une scolarité spécialisée ? Une comparaison France–Wallonie
This article proposes a comparison between the mainstream and specialised social and educational experiences, based on having observed and shared the daily routine of the latter group for an extended period of time. Given that this particular group is cared for differently, its members do not have the same experience of their alienation. If the French and Walloons strive to reach a set of norms in order to shed any labels or stigmata and to delegitimize their specialised education, Belgian youth seems to at least partially accept and interact, socially with its deviant peers, while the French fail to bring them into their ...

The analysis is built on steering documents and research articles. Although a systematic comparison is not possible, the analysis reveals a different understanding of how to support children with learning difficulties due to the traditions of the two school systems. The different ways of implementing incl...

Publication date: Available online 1 May 2018Source: AlterAuthor(s): Anne-Marie CallusAbstractArticle 12 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities challenges the misconception that persons with intellectual disability, among others, are not capable to take decisions for themselves. This paper first considers the right to equal recognition before the law within the light of the General Comment on Article 12 issued by the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which emphasises the need to move away completely from substitute decision-making and to promote supported decision-making. The import...
