Oppression in the United Arab Emirates
Reuters: An American citizen was sentenced to a year in prison in the United Arab Emirates on Monday for posting a parody video on YouTube which pokes fun at young Emirati men who imitate U.S. hip-hop culture, his family said. Shezanne Cassim, 29, has been detained in the United Arab Emirates since April after publishing the 20-minute "mockumentary" film. In the video, which opens with a disclaimer stating it is fictional and does not intend to offend the people of... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

An Alarming Story
Michael Luo and Mike McIntire: Last April, workers at Middlesex Hospital in Connecticut called the police to report that a psychiatric patient named Mark Russo had threatened to shoot his mother if officers tried to take the 18 rifles and shotguns he kept at her house. Mr. Russo, who was off his medication for paranoid schizophrenia, also talked about the recent elementary school massacre in Newtown and told a nurse that he “could take a chair and kill you or... A Legal Question
Chicago Tribune: Egged on by others, a teen fatally shot a man Thursday afternoon on the South Side after demanding to know where he was from, prosecutors said today. Iman Frison, 18, was ordered held without bail Saturday in connection with the slaying of Andre Hunter, 19, about 2:40 p.m. Thursday in the Winneconna Parkway neighborhood. While walking home from school near the 7700 block of South Stewart Avenue, Hunter and a witness were approached from behind by Frison, said... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

The Republican Party Is Not A Suicide Pact
So argues political scientist, Seth Maskett: Jamelle Bouie has a very nice response to William Galston and Elaine Kamarck's recent essay "The New Politics of Evasion." Galston and Kamarck describe the Republicans as being on the "wrong side of a demographic tidal wave." That is, the non-white share of the American population is growing rapidly, and it's increasingly voting Democratic. This doesn't mean the Republicans will lose all power -- given Americans' non-random residency patterns, control of the House, Senate,... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Google Reports Rise In Government Take Down Notices
Emma Woolacott reporting at Forbes: Google’s latest Transparency Report shows that it received 3,846 government requests to remove content from its services – 68 percent up over the second half of 2012. Of these, three percent were overtly related to government criticism, with Google complying with fewer than a third. “Over the past four years, one worrying trend has remained consistent: governments continue to ask us to remove political content,” says the company’s legal director, Susan Infantino, in a blog... Where are the school bus stops?
For years now, I've noticed that many suburban school buses pick up and drop off children in front of their homes instead of collecting and depositing them at group stops. I've never really thought about this, but has the suburban school bus stop gone the way of children playing outside without adult supervision? (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

The Death Of Bernard Shaw
The NY Times is reporting that Bernard Shaw has died. Shaw was the husband and former bodyguard of Patty Hearst. During the 1980s, Shaw and Hearst lived in my teen-years hometown in CT. The news reminded me that my mom used to see Patty Hearst at the Minute Man cleaners, where they were both customers. And an old friend first encountered Hearst in, of all places, a bank. I never ran into Hearst. I was living in Chicago by that... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Epigentic Inheritence
The Atlantic: Epigenetic research is a hot-button topic at the moment, generating a lot of attention in both scientific studies and the media. Epigenetics is the ability of genes to be influenced by our experiences, altering our genetic make-up in real time. By changing the chemical signals that course through your brain and body, you can actually turn genes on or off, a process that can then influence your future actions. Thus, in some ways, epigenetics can be thought of... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)
