Skokie Police Officer Behaving Badly
On the left, that's Skokie (IL) police officer, Michael Hart, seriously injuring a 47-year-old woman being processed after an arrest for DUI. It appears from the video that she was being fully cooperative, though she was also charged with resisting arrest on grounds that appear to be baseless. She also claims that prior to the attack, the police dished out some extra jailhouse justice by stripping her and leaving her naked in a cell. The woman has since pleaded guilty... A Long Way From Subway Tokens
CTA is nearing the end of the magnetic stripe era, so yesterday I picked up a Ventra-CTA Debit card. I think it will be more convenient, but I ran into repeated glitches registering the card before I finally got the system to cooperate. Today, I read that CTA has received 20,000 complaints about registration problems. They say that they're working out some bugs caused by their zealous security measures. No wonder the CTA worker who helped me yesterday urged me... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

David Hume, The Jokester
In an amusing letter to Adam Smith, David Hume offers his critique of Smith's book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments: My Dear Mr. Smith, have patience: compose yourself to tranquillity: show yourself a philosopher in practice as well as profession: think on the emptiness and rashness and futility of the common judgments of men: how little they are regulated by reason in any subject, much more in philosophical subjects, which so far exceed the comprehension of the vulgar. Non si... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

The Peanut Butter Test For Alzheimers
Dan Nosowitz: "The ability to smell is associated with the first cranial nerve and is often one of the first things to be affected in cognitive decline," reads this release from the University of Florida, researchers from which conducted the experiment. But with Alzheimer's patients, the sense of smell is affected in a very particular way: The left nostril is significantly more impaired than the right. Weird! But true. The experiment involved capping one nostril and measuring the distance at... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

And this is what we get...
“President Obama waived a ban on arming terrorists in order to allow weapons to go to the Syrian opposition. Your listeners, US taxpayers, are now paying to give arms to terrorists including Al Qaeda. … This happened and as of today the United States is willingly, knowingly, intentionally sending arms to terrorists, now what this says to me, I’m a believer in Jesus Christ, as I look at the End Times scripture, this says to me that the leaf is... What's Up With this?
From Jennifer Senior's NY Mag interview of Justice Scalia: Senior: Here’s another thing I find unexpected about you: that you play poker. Do not take this the wrong way, but you strike me as the kind of person who would be a horrible poker player. Scalia: Shame on you! I’m a damn good poker player. Senior: But aren’t you the kind of guy who always puts all of his cards on the table? I feel like you would be the... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Bruce Bartlett: Wells Fargo Bank economist Scott Anderson has said of a default, “It would be an earth-shattering event. It’s taken as given that U.S. Treasuries are a safe asset. Once you question that assumption, it shakes the foundations of global finance and the way it’s been established over the last 50 years." University of California, Berkeley, economist Barry Eichengreen, a world-renowned expert on the international monetary system, warned that a debt default could lead to a run on the... Stacking The Stands
Columbus Dispatch: Northwestern, which has the smallest enrollment in the Big Ten at 19,000 students, has been working since the summer to keep Ohio State fans from overrunning Ryan Field when the teams kick off at 8 tonight. “We owe it to our team to give them the best advantage possible, and if we can help set that up, we’ll do so,” said Ryan Chenault, assistant athletic director for marketing at Northwestern. [...] For tonight’s game, also a sellout, Northwestern... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Saturday Love Reflections
This morning, I ran into a woman with whom I had a relationship during my 20s. That was my last relationship to begin with an infatuation. Not because of that relationship, but after that, love always commenced in low gear, building slowly from liking and physical attraction, but not infatuation. When I think back to that 20-something relationship, I see myself as having been pretty narcissistically attached. That is, I endowed her with qualities that were more about my needs...
