A Moving Tribute In Photos
Wesley Bonner: Angelo Merendino started the blog The Battle We Didn’t Choose to honor his wife Jennifer’s heroic fight with Breast Cancer. Diagnosed just five months after their wedding, she struggled chronic pain, 10-day hospital stays, and frustrating insurance company meetings for over four years before dying at age 40. Some of Mr. Merendino's photos can be seen here. (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

How Drug Companies Screw With Our Lives
First, some background from the NY Times: Asthma — the most common chronic disease that affects Americans of all ages, about 40 million people — can usually be well controlled with drugs. But being able to afford prescription medications in the United States often requires top-notch insurance or plenty of disposable income, and time to hunt for deals and bargains. The arsenal of medicines in the Hayeses’ kitchen helps explain why. Pulmicort, a steroid inhaler, generally retails for over $175... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Regional Differences in Big Five Personality Dimensions
Science Daily: Americans with similar temperaments are so likely to live in the same areas that a map of the country can be divided into regions with distinct personalities, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association. People in the north-central Great Plains and the South tend to be conventional and friendly, those in the Western and Eastern seaboards lean toward being mostly relaxed and creative, while New Englanders and Mid-Atlantic residents are prone to being more temperamental... Lunch Shot
This was lunch today at RJ Grunts in Chicago. Incredibly, this is the first time I've ever eaten there. Very '70s. RJ Grunts was the first of dozens of one-off and multiple-outlet eateries developed by legendary, genius restaurateur, Rich Melman and his many partners. Since Grunts opened in 1971, the company has developed 130 restaurants covering 70 different concepts, virtually all successful. Grunts understandably lost steam over the years, but when Melman announced a couple of years back that the... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Not So Candid
I didn't think I could pull off a true candid in this case, so I asked this fellow if I could shoot while he played with his phone. (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Brown Shirts, Kenyans, Tyranny!
Sometimes the police behave badly and sometimes protesters say stupid things, misdirecting their ire toward the police. In this case it appears that the police are very professionally maintaining security outside the White House. How is this tyranny? I'll be among the first to call out the police when they abuse people, but I don't see them doing anything other than what they should be doing under the circumstances. Now if the police treat the protesters to some 1968, Chicago-style... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

The Banality Of Creativity Literature
Thomas Frank: What our correspondent also understood, sitting there in his basement bathtub, was that the literature of creativity was a genre of surpassing banality. Every book he read seemed to boast the same shopworn anecdotes and the same canonical heroes. If the authors are presenting themselves as experts on innovation, they will tell us about Einstein, Gandhi, Picasso, Dylan, Warhol, the Beatles. If they are celebrating their own innovations, they will compare them to the oft-rejected masterpieces of Impressionism... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)
