Alec Baldwin Defends Himself
Balwdwin "as told to Joe Hagan": In the New Media culture, anything good you do is tossed in a pit, and you are measured by who you are on your worst day. What’s the Boy Scout code? Trustworthy. Loyal. Helpful. Friendly. Courteous. Kind. Obedient. Cheerful. Thrifty. Brave. Clean. Reverent. I might be all of those things, at certain moments. But people suspect that whatever good you do, you are faking. You’re that guy. You’re that guy that says this. As... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Someone Is Ignoring The New Pope's Memos
Michael Powell: John J. Myers, the archbishop of the Newark Archdiocese, comes to this vacation home on many weekends. The 4,500-square-foot home has a handsome amoeba-shaped swimming pool out back. And as he’s 72, and retirement beckons in two years, he has renovations in mind. A small army of workers are framing a 3,000-square-foot addition. [...] So many leaders of the church have served it so badly for so many decades that it’s hard to keep track of their maledictions.... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

A Case Of Shooting The Messenger?
NY Times: GREENVILLE, S.C. — For decades, students at Bob Jones University who sought counseling for sexual abuse were told not to report it because turning in an abuser from a fundamentalist Christian community would damage Jesus Christ. Administrators called victims liars and sinners. All of this happened until recently inside the confines of this insular university, according to former students and staff members who said they had high hopes that the Bob Jones brand of counseling would be exposed... Ios 7
Believe it or not, I've ignored the update notification for months. I've been perfectly happy with 6 and didn't want to rock the boat. Any opinions out there? Am I missing out? (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Philip Seymour Didn't Think Much Of L.A.
At least not in 2004 when he wrote a will that was submitted to a court in Manhattan this week: Among Philip Seymour Hoffman's final wishes, one stands out: the actor did not want his son, Cooper, to grow up in Hollywood. In his will, signed in October 2004 and submitted into Manhattan's Surrogate Court on Wednesday, the late Oscar winner asked that Cooper (his only child at the time the document was written) be "raised and reside in" Manhattan,... Oh, The Humanity! Mass Murderer Denied Play Station 3
Via Eric Zorn: LONDON — Convicted mass killer Anders Behring Breivik, the right-wing extremist who methodically hunted down and shot dozens of young people at a summer camp in Norway, has threatened to mount a hunger strike if his prison conditions don’t improve, including better video games. Breivik, 35, sent a letter to media outlets saying he would starve himself to death if his demands weren’t met, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. Among those demands is access to a sofa... Facebook Buying App For $16 Billion
(Reuters) - Facebook Inc will buy fast-growing mobile-messaging startup WhatsApp for $16 billion in cash and stock, as the world's largest social network looks for ways to boost its popularity, especially among a younger crowd. That's nearly 10 times as much as Google paid for Youtube at the end of 2006. (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

When the bartender cuts you off, walk away
To the three drunk men involved, this probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but not so much in the cold light of day: A third man has been charged with flooding parts of Trump Tower, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, after he and two friends were denied service at a bar because they were intoxicated, police said. Daniel T. Maradei, of the 4100 block of Woodlake Drive in Hanover Park, was charged with felony... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Mel Reynolds
If you're not from Chicago, you probably haven't heard of this ex-con, dirtbag former congressman, but for some reason his name came to mind over the weekend. I wondered for a moment about what ever happened to him, but quickly dismissed the thought from my mind and didn't bother to look him up on the internets. Well, Mel Reynolds is back in the news, this time because he has been arrested in Zimbabwe. Jonathan Turley has the story. (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Looking into the future, 50 years ago
Isaac Asimov writing in 1964: The I.B.M. exhibit at the [1964 World’s] fair has no robots but it is dedicated to computers, which are shown in all their amazing complexity, notably in the task of translating Russian into English. If machines are that smart today, what may not be in the works 50 years hence? Answer: thousands of personal TV channels documenting our embarrassing moments. (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

We picked up friends in North Evanston for an annual NYD breakfast. While waiting to leave, an ambulance and fire truck arrived a couple of doors away. Chest pains after shoveling snow. Be careful out there. (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)
