Black and White or Colo[u]r? Updated
Commenter A Bear recently asked why I show a preference for black and white processing. Here's a photo that nicely illustrates one aesthetic consideration. Color version below the fold: In this case, the color of her hair and the dog could be eye catching against the simple dark colors of her jacket, jeans and the pavement around the dog. But the background colors framing her and the dog are distracting or, as one of my flickr pals put it, the... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Halloween in the Suburbs
A Naperville police officer trying to break up a fight was punched over the weekend by a man who thought his uniform was a Halloween costume, according to authorities. Yes, alcohol was involved. Story (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

10-second Review
Masters of Sex: Arrogant, uptight surgeon with poor people skills treats an intelligent, self-aware secretary and research collaborator like crap, even though he has the hots for her and she's indispensable to the success of the research. His growing obsession and pursuit of her are creepy, but viewers may feel a bit of mitigating sympathy because his unlikable personality was forged by childhood abuse and humiliation at the hands of his father, while his distraught mother tuned out the abuse... Who's the denialist?
I'm a bit late posting this, but here's an excerpt from the Emily Yoffe post that triggered an internet ruckus: Let’s be totally clear: Perpetrators are the ones responsible for committing their crimes, and they should be brought to justice. But we are failing to let women know that when they render themselves defenseless, terrible things can be done to them. Young women are getting a distorted message that their right to match men drink for drink is a feminist... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi
Oh, it's such a perfect day I'm glad I spend it with you Oh, such a perfect day You just keep me hanging on (Lou Reed)— Gianfranco Ravasi (@CardRavasi) October 28, 2013 Ravasi explained later that he was praising the music, not the drugs and lifestyle represented in Reed's music. Did he need to explain that? I guess you can never be too clear with some people. The Cardinal has said in the past that he listened to Amy Winehouse... (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)

Best thing I've read this week: Justin Fox in the Harvard Business Review, What We've Learned From The Financial Crisis. I'd retitle the article: What some people have learned, what many have ignored and there is much more we still don't know. (Source: Dr. X's Free Associations)
