Osteochondromas of the proximal humerus. Diagnostic and therapeutic management
Conclusions Osteochondromas of the proximal humerus do not differ from those in other locations. Symptomatic cases and those in which malignancy is suspected would be operated, the former preferably at the end of growth. The surgical treatment is summarised in planning the approach, using CT and/or MRI, extraperiosteal en bloc resection, and eventual bone reconstruction, ideally with allograft. Outcomes of rotator cuff augmentation surgery with autologous fascia lata
Conclusion Our preliminary results regarding rotator cuff augmentation surgery with autologous fascia lata showed a significant improvement in pain levels after 6 months compared to the patients with no augmentation, who required 12 months to reach the same values. After a year of follow up, there were no differences between the mean Constant and pain scores in either intervention group The number of retears in the non-graft group was greater than that in the group with grafts although the difference was not significant. Intracraneal complications after spinal surgery
We report a patient who after surgery for lumbar stenosis presented a subarachnoid haemorrhage, an intraparenchymal haematoma, and a subdural haematoma. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature with such complications after this type of surgery. (Source: Revista Espanola de Cirugia Ortopedica y Traumatologia)

Hip prostheses in young adults. Surface prostheses and short-stem prostheses
Publication date: March–April 2018 Source:Revista Española de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología (English Edition), Volume 62, Issue 2 Author(s): X. Gallart, J. Riba, J.A. Fernández-Valencia, G. Bori, E. Muñoz-Mahamud, A. Combalia The poor results obtained in young patients when using a conventional prosthesis led to the resurgence of hip resurfacing to find less invasive implants for the bone. Young patients present a demand for additional activity, which makes them a serious challenge for the survival of implants. In addition, new information technologies contribute decisively to the preference for non-ce...

Risk factors for trochanteric and femoral neck fracture
Conclusions Trochanteric fractures are associated with women patients of more advanced ages, 5–9 previous diseases and accidental falls. Cerebrovascular disease shows a higher prevalence in cervical fractures. (Source: Revista Espanola de Cirugia Ortopedica y Traumatologia)

Non-traumatic limping in Paediatric Emergencies: Epidemiology, evaluation and results
Conclusions In limping of probable hip origin, at the ages of between 3 and 10, without fever or systemic symptoms and of less than one week's onset, it is possible to make a clinical diagnosis of TS limiting the use of complementary examinations. Clinical factors that affect perceived quality of life in arthroscopic reconstruction for acromioclavicular joint dislocation
Conclusions The health-related quality of life (assessed by SF-36) in patients undergoing arthroscopic repair of acromioclavicular joint dislocation grades iii–v was not influenced by gender, age, grade, displacement, handedness, evolution of the VAS, scoring of the Constant or by the WD. However, it is correlated with the evolution in the DASH score. (Source: Revista Espanola de Cirugia Ortopedica y Traumatologia)

Diaphyseal forearm fractures, 20 years after surgical treatment. Is there still an indication for percutaneous fixation?
Conclusion This surgical technique provides several advantages, such as a low incidence of complications and a total absence of infections, refractures and iatrogenic neurovascular injuries. It allows a lower hospital stay and a shortening of the surgery time compared with other techniques such as plates and intramedullary nails, that have similar results, in terms of bone union and functional outcomes, as we have verified from the published literature. Scaphoid fractures treated with a volar percutaneous approach. Analysis and results in 92 cases
Conclusions Volar percutaneous fixation is a simple and quick technique for a specialist surgeon, characterised by low morbidity and complication rates compared to ORIF and orthopaedic treatment, which accelerates the patient's functional recovery. Influence of the thickness of the transverse carpal ligament in carpal tunnel syndrome
Conclusion Carpal tunnel syndrome is multifactorial. The thickness of the transverse ligament does not directly affect the onset of symptoms. (Source: Revista Espanola de Cirugia Ortopedica y Traumatologia)

New method for antibiotic release from bone cement (polymethylmethacrylate): Redefining boundaries
The objective of our study was to isolate the rifampicin during the polymerisation process using microencapsulation techniques, in order to obtain a PMMA suitable for manufacturing bone cement spacers. Material and method Microcapsules of rifampicin were synthesised with alginate and PHBV, using Rifaldin®. The concentration levels of rifampicin were studied by UV–vis spectrophotometry. Compression, hardness and setting time tests were performed with CMW®1 cement samples alone, with non-encapsulated rifampicin and with alginate or PHBV microcapsules. Results The production yield, efficiency and microencapsulation yiel...

Resurfacing arthroplasty as an alternative to the posttraumatic sequelae of fractures of the external column of the humerus in the young adult
Publication date: January–February 2018 Source:Revista Española de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología (English Edition), Volume 62, Issue 1 Author(s): M. Aroca-Peinado, D. Cecilia-López, V. Jiménez-Díaz Symptomatic posttraumatic arthritis of the elbow in young patients is a disorder for which there is currently no satisfactory solution. In this case report, we show the evolution of a comminuted fracture of the capitellum with trochlear extension (McKee type IV) treated initially with open reduction and internal fixation that eventually required a resurfacing hemiarthroplasty of the capitellum and reconstructi...

Forearm diaphyseal fractures in children: Intramedullary Kirschner's wire fixation treatment
This study shows that intramedullary fixation with Kirschner nails in radius and ulna diaphysis fractures in children is a safe, low-cost procedure and offers adequate short and medium term functional outcomes, with a low prevalence of serious complications with only 6 cases of non-consolidation and refracture. Larger preoperative angulations in the anteroposterior and lateral planes, and lateral postoperative angulations, could be considered predictors of less satisfactory functional results.
