Comparison between two generations to verify the morphological changes in female futsal athletes in a period of 10 years
Abstract The aim was to compare two generations to verify the morphological changes in female futsal athletes. Age, years of playing, anthropometry measurements, percentage body fat and somatotype were compared between professional athletes in 2001 (n=112) and 2011 (n=115). The 2011 group revealed a significant longer practice time (9.0 ±4.3 vs. 5.7±3.5 years; p<0.001), higher thigh skinfold (26.1 ±8.5 vs. 22.5±6.7 mm; p<0.001), circumference of tensed forearm (27.4 ±2.1 vs. 26.7±2.1 cm; p=0.007), mesomorphy (4.1 vs. 3.3; p=0.001) and lower supraspinale skinfold (14.0±5.0 vs. 19.1±7.4 mm; p<0.001), trunk/e...

Training intensity distribution of young elite soccer players
Abstract The current study described the training load and intensity distribution of 30 elite Under 20 soccer players (17.9 ± 0.6 years, 180.3 ± 5.7 cm, 73.7 ± 8.8kg) from a 3-time FIFA Club World Cup champion. Session-rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE), internal training load (ITL) and monotony were recorded across 40 training sessions. Mixed-effects modeling was used for data analysis. The athletes performed 33.0 ± 6.9 out of 40 planned training sessions. Most common reasons for absence from training included sickness or minor injuries. Overall, these training sessions summed 2928.7 ± 627.6 minutes. Athletes perfo...

Neuromuscular and motor patterns in breaststroke technique
Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the inter-temporal neuromuscular and motor patterns in breaststroke technique. Five national level male swimmers performed 200 m breaststroke at maximal effort. Electromyography data onbiceps brachii, deltoid anterior, pectoralis major and triceps brachiiwere analysed. The relative duration of active and non-active phase and the average rectified value for the neuromuscular patterns were recorded. The swim bouts were videotaped in sagittal plane with a pair of cameras and the Theme software 5.0 was used toanalyse the detected patterns in each swimmer. The neuromuscular pattern ...

Hemodynamic responses to strength exercise with blood flow restriction in small muscle groups
Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the acute hemodynamic responses to strength exercise with blood flow restriction involving small muscle groups. The sample consisted of 10 male volunteers (22.6 ± 2.07 years, 1.78 ± 0.06 m, 76.32 ± 13.36 kg) who randomly performed two experimental protocols involving the elbow flexion exercise with the dominant arm: strength exercise of the elbow flexors with blood flow restriction (EFBFR) and strength exercise of the elbow flexors without blood flow res triction (EEF). A cross-over design with a seven to ten days interval between the experimental protocols was used. Systoli...

Motor coordination as predictor of physical fitness in prepubertal boys
Abstract Motor competence is associated with numerous health-related variables of the pediatric population. The present study aimed to analyze the effect of the level of motor coordination on performance in several physical fitness tests in prepubertal boys, before and after controlling body mass. The sample consisted of 71 Brazilian eight-year-old boys. Anthropometry included stature, body mass and estimates of fat mass and fat-free mass. Biological maturation was evaluated by the percentage of predicted adult stature. The physical tests applied were 2-kg medicineball throw, handgrip strength, sit-ups in 60 seconds, stand...

Body fat, but not muscle quality, is related to perceived fatigue in young-adult active and inactive women
Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of perceived fatigue with body composition and muscle quality (strength, thickness and specific torque) in young adult women. Fifty-one healthy women (31.98 ± 6.88 years) were assessed regarding perceived fatigue, body composition, knee extensors muscle strength, muscle thickness, and muscle quality. The short version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire was applied to classify subjects as active or inactive. To examine the relationship bet ween perceived fatigue and dependent variables, the Pearson ’ s correlation was performed. Perceived...

Effect of number of hours and days of accelerometer use on physical activity estimates in adolescents
Abstract The study analyzed the effect of number of hours and days of accelerometer use on estimates of physical activity (PA) time in adolescents. Cross-sectional study of 784 adolescents from 10 to 14 years old (53.9% girls). Overlapping 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were used to compare mean light (LPA), moderate (MPA), vigorous (VPA) and moderate to vigorous (MVPA) physical activity times and prevalence of sufficient PA levels between different numbers of hours ( ≥ 6, ≥ 8 and ≥ 10 hours/day) and days ( ≥ 3, ≥ 4, ≥ 5 and 7 days of use). The criterions of ≥ 6 hours/day with ≥ 3, ≥ 4, ≥ 5 e 7 days a...

Sedentary behavior and functional disability in older adults with low economic status: Monidi Study
Abstract Excess time spent in sedentary activities may intensify functional losses among the elderly; however, information on the amount of time in sedentary activities related to these losses is still incipient. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive power of sedentary behavior (SB) and to establish cutoff points for functional disability (FD) discriminators in the elderly. A cross-sectional study was carried out with sample of 310 older adults with mean age of 71.62 ± 8.15 years, randomly selected and residents in the municipality of Ibicuí-BA. Sedentary behavior was assessed by measuring the time spent ...

Applicability of the body adiposity index to estimate body fat in adolescents with type-1 diabetes mellitus
ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to verify the level of concordance between Body Adiposity Index (BAI) and Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) in the evaluation of body fat percentage in adolescents with type-1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). The sample consisted of 34 adolescents (16 boys and 18 girls) aged 10-15 years. Height and hip circumference data were collected for BAI calculation, and fat percentage was evaluated using DEXA. The Shapiro Wilk test was used to verify data normality. The Wilcoxon test was performed to compare age, anthropometric and BMI, BAI z score and DEXA between sexes. The correlation of va...
