Effects of aerobic and resistance training on the cardiorespiratory fitness of young people with Down Syndrome
Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 12 weeks of aerobic and resistance training on the maximal and submaximal cardiorespiratory fitness of young people with Down Syndrome (DS). Forty-one individuals of both sexes with Down syndrome (age, 15.51 ±2.70 y) were divided into three groups: CG (control group) with 10 participants; ATG group (aerobic training group) with 16 participants; and RTG (resistance training group) with 15 participants. The training program lasted 12 weeks, with frequency of 3 days a week for ATG and two RTG, and duratio n of 50 minutes per session. Aerobic training consisted ...

Acute neuromuscular response during eccentric overload protocol by using a mechanical device to increase the load
Abstract The aim of this study was to propose a mechanical device that could increase the mechanical load during the entire eccentric (ECC) action on a knee flexor machine and to compare the muscular activity when the device was used during a testing protocol. Fifteen physically active women were recruited, and they performed two protocols: control and eccentric overload. Control protocol was performed with concentric (CON) and ECC actions with similar load (60% of one repetition maximum) whilst eccentric overload protocol consisted of ECC actions with 40% more load than CON actions. Muscular activation was measured using ...

Birthplace and birthdate of Brazilian Olympic medalists
Abstract The aim of the present study was to analyze the association between birthplace and relative age with winning Olympic medals in Brazilian athletes. he sample consisted of 186 Olympic medalist athletes born in Brazil. Data analysis was performed through descriptive (incidence and percentage) and inferential statistics (Chi-Square to binary logistic regression). The association between population contingents and Olympic champions presented a significant result (p<0.05); however, no significant associations were found with relative age. It was concluded that most Olympic medalists were born in places that present b...

Tactical behavior in soccer small-sided games: influence of team composition criteria
This study aimed to compare the tactical behavior of young soccer players during small-sided games played with team composition criteria based on procedural tactical knowledge, aerobic power and speed performance. Eighteen male soccer players played 3vs.3 small-sided games with teams balanced according to players ’ performance on Sprint Test, Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test and the field test of the System of Tactical Assessment in Soccer. Data related to the incidence of tactical principles were analyzed through the proportions chi-square test with Bonferroni ’ s correction. One-way ANOVA was used to compare players...

Abstract The aim of this study was to provide a descriptive analysis of the morphological structure, muscle strength, and anaerobic power performance of the upper limbs of wheelchair basketball athletes. Eleven male players (33.2 ± 10.6 years, 71.8 ± 15.8 kg) were submitted to anthropometric measurements and dynamometry (kg), medicine ball throwing (m) and wingate arm tests (W). The results showed sitting height (79.7 ± 4.6 cm), relative body fat (20.7 ± 7.6%), handgrip strength and explosive muscle strength (50.1 ± 10. 6 kg and 3.9 ± 1.1 m, respectively), as well as peak power (316.8 ± 126.2 W), mean power (160.5 ...

Skeletal age and explosive strength in young volleyball players
Abstract Identifying different anthropometric, physiological and motor aspects is essential to obtain success in sports practice. However, these components may be developed in same age subjects differently, in part due biological development. The aim of the study was compare and correlate the explosive strength to biological maturation by sex, obtained by estimation of skeletal age based on anthropometric variables. The sample consisted of 239 subjects of both sexes, aged 10 to 13 years. Maturation was assessed by skeletal age predictive equation and upper and lower limbs explosive strength using medicine ball throw test a...

Can disordered eating behaviors reduce maximum oxygen consumption in road cyclists?
Abstract The aim of this study was to compare the maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) between road cyclists with and without risk for eating disorders. The sample was composed of 43 cyclists aged 18-25 years, participants of the road cycling championship of the State of Pernambuco. VO2max was measured by a computerized metabolic analyzer during an incremental test in cycleergometer. The initial test load was 50 W, with increments of 25 W every minute until volitional exhaustion or inability to maintain the current load. To evaluate disordered eating behaviors (DEB), the Eating Attitudes Test was used (EAT-26). Univariate a...

Change of Pronation Angle of the Subtalar Joint has Influence on Plantar Pressure Distribution
Abstract Several studies have investigated the relationship between heel pronation with plantar pressure during gait. With a degree of variability and influence of the footwear, usually excessive pronation is associated with higher mechanical loads. However, larger loads are commonly associated with pronation. his study aims to compare the plantar pressure distribution among individuals with different pronation angles of the subtalar joint angle during gait with controlled speed. he maximum angle of the subtalar joint was determined by capturing images in the frontal plane and the pressure plant peaks were acquired by EMED...

Peak height velocity in anthropometry and body composition of students
Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the age of Peak Height Velocity (PHV), anthropometric variables and body composition of students from the western state of Paran á. he study included 1,011 male students aged 12-15 years from 11 municipalities located around the Itaipu lake. Anthropometric and body composition variables were obtained according to international criteria. Biological maturation was determined by age of PHV and for the purpose of analysis, it wa s categorized into developmental levels. he results reinforce, as expected, an increasing trend of variables analyzed as students advanced in maturity. hu...

Diagnostic property of anthropometric indicators in the prediction of high body fat estimated by DXA in hypertensive women
Abstract Excess body fat is an important risk factor for the development of arterial hypertension. he aim of this study was to verify the diagnostic performance of anthropometric indicators in the prediction of excess body fat estimated by Dual-energy Radiometric Absorptiometry (DXA) in hypertensive women. A cross-sectional study with 71 hypertensive women (57.9 ± 10.1 years; 77.8 ± 15.1 kg; 156.8 ± 5.2 cm) was carried out. he anthropometric indicators analyzed were: Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Circumference (WC), Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR), Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) and Conicity Index (C Index). Body fat measured by ...

Accuracy of alternative indexes for assessing the nutritional status of men and women
In conclusion, none of the indexes investigated has good accuracy in assessing the nutritional status of the study group, considering that, although they show results of correlation with the reference method, they do not reach the minimum agreement criterion.

Prevalence and concordance in the prediction of excess body weight by two anthropometric criteria in adolescents of western Brazilian Amazon
This study evaluated 4,310 adolescents, 2,167 from Rio Branco and 2,143 from Porto Velho. No difference (p=0.46) for excess weight between adolescents from Rio Branco (34.8%) and Porto Velho (33.8%) was observed. Fat percentage was significantly higher (p<0.01) in adolescents from Porto Velho (59.8%) compared to those from Rio Branco (44.3%). In intra-pubertal and pubertal stages, moderate concordance was identified (p<0.01) and in pre-pubertal stage, substantial concordance was observed (p<0.01). Thus, the findings of this study point out the adequacy of screening and diagnosis of obesity and overweight, which wi...
