Bedaquiline in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment: Safety and efficacy in a Korean subpopulation
ConclusionsBedaquiline showed similar efficacy and safety in Korean patients with MDR-TB, despite their advanced drug-resistance profiles, possibly due to other concomitant drugs such as linezolid. (Source: Respiratory Investigation)

The impact of obstructive sleep apnea and PAP therapy on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality based on age and gender – a literature review
ConclusionThere is a debate in the literature regarding the impact of OSA on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in both genders and in different age groups. However, the variation in results might be related to different study designs and significant epidemiological prevalence of OSA in males and females. (Source: Respiratory Investigation)

Should pulmonologists be gatekeepers or supporters for preoperative patients?
Publication date: Available online 16 October 2019Source: Respiratory InvestigationAuthor(s): Satoshi Hokari, Toshiaki KikuchiAbstractPostoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are considered as a leading cause of poor surgical outcomes, and occur frequently even in non-cardiothoracic surgery. Several multifactorial risk indices show potential effectiveness in identification of patients at high risk of developing PPCs. In preoperative consultation from surgeons, pulmonologists often act as gatekeepers for indication of surgery. With regard to preventive strategy for PPCs, recent reports have suggested the usefulness of p...

Mesalazine-induced airway obstruction: Utility of pulmonary function testing in drug-induced lung diseases
Publication date: Available online 8 October 2019Source: Respiratory InvestigationAuthor(s): Haruki Hirakawa, Hiroki Tashiro, Koichiro Takahashi, Masahide Tanaka, Hironori Sadamatsu, Shinya Kimura, Naoko Sueoka-AraganeAbstractMesalazine is a standard therapeutic agent for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases. A rare case of mesalazine-induced airway obstruction documented by pulmonary function testing is reported herein. The patient had Crohn's disease and was treated with mesalazine; she subsequently developed a high fever, cough, and chest pain with centrilobular nodular shadows on chest computed tomography (CT)....

Current state and future prospect of the therapeutic strategy targeting cysteinyl leukotriene metabolism in asthma
Publication date: Available online 4 October 2019Source: Respiratory InvestigationAuthor(s): Takayuki Yamamoto, Jun Miyata, Makoto Arita, Koichi Fukunaga, Akihiko KawanaAbstractAsthma is an allergic disorder with dominant type 2 airway inflammation, and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. Inhalation of corticosteroids is the primary treatment for asthma along with add-on drugs, including long-acting β2 agonists and/or cysteinyl leukotriene (cys-LT) receptor antagonists, in patients with poorly controlled asthma. Cys-LTs are composed of leukotriene C4 (LTC4), LTD4, and LTE4, which are enzymatically metabolized from ara...

Clinical and radiological features of pulmonary tuberculosis in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
ConclusionsIncidental radiological findings were the most common presenting manifestations in TB-IPF patients, who were more likely to present with atypical PTB manifestations on CT scan and who experienced poorer treatment outcomes. (Source: Respiratory Investigation)

Spontaneous pneumothorax and air travel in Pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis: A patient survey
ConclusionsSP is a common manifestation of PLCH, can be seen in approximately one-fourth of the patients, and has a high recurrence risk. Surgical pleurodesis leads to a substantial reduction in the SP recurrence risk. The risk of an air travel-related SP in patients with PLCH is about 2–3 per thousand flights.Trial registry clinicaltrials.govNCT03052101. (Source: Respiratory Investigation)

Polymicrobial etiology as a prognostic factor for empyema in addition to the renal, age, purulence, infection source, and dietary factors score
ConclusionsMembers of the S. anginosus group and anaerobes were frequent pathogens in empyema, and polymicrobial etiology was independently associated with mortality in addition to the RAPID score. Surgery may be one option for preventing mortality. (Source: Respiratory Investigation)

Solitary pulmonary nodules caused by Mycobacterium avium complex
ConclusionsMAC should be considered in the differential diagnosis of SPNs in asymptomatic patients. To overcome the difficulties in diagnosing MAC-SPN, this study underscores the importance of diagnostic interventions and identification of MAC by culture and/or NAAT in biopsied specimens.
