Influence of Different Levels of Immersion in Water on the Pulmonary Function and Respiratory Muscle Pressure in Healthy Individuals: Observational Study
ConclusionThe results suggest that immersion at the level of the clavicles and xiphoid appendix alters lung function and respiratory muscle strength when compared with the values measured out of the water and immersed at the IC level in healthy individuals, demonstrating the influence of hydrostatic pressure on the respiratory system. Do ICF Core Sets for Low Back Pain Include Patients' Self‐Reported Activity Limitations because of Back Problems?
ConclusionsThe Comprehensive Core Set for LBP to a large degree contains daily life and work‐related activities frequently reported as difficult to perform by patients with long‐lasting LBP. The categories, however, are very broad and do not provide specified descriptions of the most frequently reported activity limitations such as sitting, standing and walking. The Brief Core Set does not include categories for frequently reported activities such as pulling/pushing and leisure/recreation activities. ICF Core Sets for LBP seem suitable for obtaining a gross overview of the patients' functional limitations, but do not g...

Placement Education Pedagogy as Social Participation: What are Students Really Learning?
This study adopted a social perspective of learning to focus on the minutiae of placement educator, student and patient interaction practices during student‐present therapeutic activities. Two days of placement for each of six senior students were densely recorded in real‐time focussing specifically on the verbal, kinesics and proxemics‐based elements of the participants' interaction practices. Repeated cycles of data analysis suggested consistent practices irrespective of the placement, educators, students or patients. ResultsThe data suggest that placement education is a powerful situated learning environment in wh...

How do Patients, Politicians, Physiotherapists and Other Health Professionals View Physiotherapy Research in Switzerland? A Qualitative Study
ConclusionsResults of this qualitative study provide insights into key aspects for moving the physiotherapy profession forward. Identity is at the heart of physiotherapy, not necessarily in terms of research priorities but in the definition of domains of competence and future positioning. Identity is also tightly connected to Interdisciplinarity as this might threaten the existence of the profession. Stakeholders outside the profession insist on the importance of visibility. The results of this study can help stakeholders reflect on the future of physiotherapy and elaborate research priorities. © 2013 The Authors. Physiot...

Scapular Orientation During Planar and Three‐dimensional Upper Limb Movements in Individuals with Anterior Glenohumeral Joint Instability
ConclusionsResults of this study show that scapular orientation changes associated with shoulder abduction and functional reaching activities were similar in people with GHJ instability and those with healthy shoulders. The current study suggests that anterior GHJ instability has little impact on scapular kinematics during upper limb movements in a chronic condition without pain, muscle weakness or limited range of motion. Altered scapular kinematics may not contribute to the high recurrence rate of anterior GHJ dislocation. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Physiotherapy Research International)

Comparison of Energy Expenditure Between Aquatic and Overground Treadmill Walking in People Post‐Stroke
ConclusionThis study demonstrated a decreased metabolic cost when ATW at matched speeds to that of OTW. Reduced metabolic cost during ATW may allow for longer durations of treadmill‐induced gait training compared with OTW for improved outcomes. This knowledge may aid clinicians when prescribing aquatic treadmill exercise for people post‐stroke with goals of improving gait and functional mobility. However, decreased metabolic cost during ATW suggests that to improve cardiovascular fitness, ATW may not be a time‐efficient method of cardiovascular exercise for healthy adults and people post‐stroke. Deep Breathing Heart Rate Variability is Associated with Inspiratory Muscle Weakness in Chronic Heart Failure
ConclusionPatients with CHF presented impaired cardiac autonomic modulation at rest. In addition, cardiac autonomic control of heart rate was associated with inspiratory muscle weakness in CHF. Based on this evidence, recommendations for future research applications of respiratory muscle training can bring to light a potentially valuable target for rehabilitation. Justification for Chest Physiotherapy during Ultra‐Protective Lung Ventilation and Extra‐Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Case Study
DiscussionRegular CPT may have facilitated secretion clearance and lung recovery in this patient. Future research should investigate the optimal CPT techniques for patients with sub‐dead space tidal ventilation and extremely low dynamic respiratory compliance during ECMO with ultra‐protective ventilatory strategy (UPVS). Possibilities and Implications of Using the ICF and Other Vocabulary Standards in Electronic Health Records
Abstract There is now widespread recognition of the powerful potential of electronic health record (EHR) systems to improve the health‐care delivery system. The benefits of EHRs grow even larger when the health data within their purview are seamlessly shared, aggregated and processed across different providers, settings and institutions. Yet, the plethora of idiosyncratic conventions for identifying the same clinical content in different information systems is a fundamental barrier to fully leveraging the potential of EHRs. Only by adopting vocabulary standards that provide the lingua franca across these local dialects c...

Clinical Guidance of Community Physiotherapists Regarding People with MS: Professional Development and Continuity of Care
Abstract Background and PurposeClinical guidance to community physiotherapists (cPTs) is an integral part of physiotherapy service offered in hospital outpatient (OP) clinics for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). There is currently a lack of knowledge on the significance of such guidance. The aims of this study were 1) to identify the features that cPTs perceive to be significant in clinical guidance and 2) how this guidance may affect the cPTs' subsequent treatment of PwMS. MethodsA phenomenological–hermeneutical framework was selected, and qualitative research interviews were performed and complemented with non‐...

Benefits and Challenges of International Clinical Education from a US‐based Physiotherapist Faculty Perspective
Abstract IntroductionThe influence of internationalization on physiotherapist education in at least North American‐based programmes has become more apparent. Faculty and students have been involved in various international activities. One category of activities includes international clinical education (ICE), where students earn clinical education credit for their learning activities at international sites. Although this educational strategy appears to be increasingly used in at least the United States and Canada, the related literature is limited in scope. The purpose of this portion of the present study was to investig...

What Functional Aspects Explain Patients' Impression of Change after Rehabilitation for Long‐lasting Low Back Pain?
ConclusionMost measures demonstrated change that was of significance to the patients after rehabilitation. Change in spinal mobility and back strength assessed by physical tests contributed to explain the patients' impression of change after controlling for change in pain and daily life functioning and may seem important to assess in addition to the self‐report measures in intervention studies. Respiratory Muscle Strength, the Six‐Minute Walk Test and Quality of Life in Chagas Cardiomyopathy
ConclusionThe inspiratory muscle strength is reduced, and the decreased quality of life has a negative influence on the physical and emotional aspects of the patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy. No correlation was found between perceived exertion and the reduction of respiratory muscle strength. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Physiotherapy Research International)
