Physiotherapy Practice: Opportunities for International Collaboration on Workforce Reforms, Policy and Research
ConclusionThere are opportunities for targeted international collaborations regarding workforce reforms such as extending scope of practice, and determining and implementing internationally agreed ways of demonstrating PT accountability. The findings of this review have significant policy implications, and identify areas for collaborative research. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Evidence‐based Practice Intentions and Long‐term Behaviours of Physiotherapy Graduates Following an Intensive Education Programme
ConclusionGraduates of an intensive EBP training programme embedded within an existing post‐graduate physiotherapy programme regularly implemented EBP in clinical practice. Barriers to evidence implementation were time, access to research and perceived lack of generalizability of research findings. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Embedding Evidence‐based Practice Education into a Post‐graduate Physiotherapy Program: Eight Years of pre‐Post Course Evaluations
ConclusionAn intensive teaching programme in health research methods and biostatistics and EBP, based on best practice adult physiotherapy learning principles, is effective immediately post‐course, in decreasing anxiety and increasing confidence in the terminology used in research methods and EBP. Conceptualization and Development of the Leg Activity Measure (LegA) for Patient and Carer Reported Assessment of Activity in the Paretic Leg
DiscussionThe Delphi consultation with clinicians experienced in this area of practice ensured content validity and appropriate reduction of items. In common with previous work in the upper limb, a 5‐point ordinal scaling structure was chosen, with ratings based on activity over the preceding 7 days. The LegA is designed to measure passive and active function following focal interventions associated with spasticity in the lower limb. Content and face validity have initially been addressed within the development process. The next phase of development will involve formal evaluation of psychometric properties. Copyright ...

Physical Therapy Treatment of Impaired Chest Mobility in Patients with Airway Sensory Hyperreactivity
ConclusionImprovement of chest mobility after physiotherapeutic intervention indicates that these patients may have acquired a dysfunctional breathing pattern. The regular use of a training programme and structural breathing instructions can be used to improve chest mobility, chest symptoms and capsaicin cough sensitivity in patients with SHR and signs of dysfunctional breathing. Body Posture After Mastectomy: Comparison Between Immediate Breast Reconstruction Versus Mastectomy Alone
ConclusionWomen who underwent mastectomy alone, compared with women who underwent immediate breast reconstruction with abdominal flaps, showed differences in the vertical alignment of the trunk, with greater asymmetry between the acromion and greater trochanter, which can mean trunk rotation. No significant differences were found between the two groups in the alignment of the head, shoulders, scapula, or pelvis. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. A Critical Evaluation of the Updated Evidence for Casting for Equinus Deformity in Children with Cerebral Palsy
ConclusionsRecent years have offered little progress in the state of evidence for casting in the management of equinus deformity. Casting appears to offer at least short‐term improvement in ankle dorsiflexion, although the proposition that this improves function or avoids surgery is not well substantiated. Future research needs to ensure more robust study design and broader evaluation across domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to determine the functional and long‐term effect of casting for equinus deformity. Greater knowledge is required of the effect of casting on muscle s...

Triage for Patients with Spinal Complaints: A Systematic Review of the Literature
DiscussionSpinal triage programmes have the potential to improve efficiency of care for outpatients with spinal complaints. The evidence gaps in health outcomes, service models and cost effectiveness should be addressed by more robust prospective research designs. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Comparison of Two Methods for Estimating Adjustable One ‐Point Cane Length in Community‐Dwelling Older Adults
ConclusionOur results suggest that, even though both measures are reliable, cane length determined by WF distance is more appropriate to keep the elbow flexion angle within the standard recommendation. The minimal detectable change corresponds to approximately a hole in the cane adjustment. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Physiotherapy Research International)
