Lung Ultrasound for Critical Care Physiotherapists: A Narrative Review
ConclusionTo our knowledge, LUS is not routinely utilized by critical care physiotherapists. However, its superior sensitivity and specificity would enable the physiotherapist to make an accurate, timely and point of care diagnosis of lung pathology and determine whether the pathology is amenable to respiratory physiotherapy. The Use of Cuff Weights for Aquatic Gait Training in People Post‐Stroke with Hemiparesis
ConclusionThe results suggest that the use of additional weight can be helpful if the goal of gait training is to improve walking speed of people post‐stroke during pool floor walking. However, it is interesting to note that changes in gait variables were not found in the paretic limb where favourable responses were expected to occur. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. United States Physical Therapists' Knowledge About Joint Hypermobility Syndrome Compared with Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis
ConclusionsThe results suggest that many physical therapists in the United States are not familiar with the diagnostic criteria, prevalence or common clinical presentation of JHS. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Physiotherapy Research International)

Reliability of the Timed Up and Go test and Ten‐Metre Timed Walk Test in Pregnant Women with Pelvic Girdle Pain
ConclusionThis study demonstrated that the TUG and 10mTWT undertaken at fast pace are reliable, objective functional tests in pregnant women with PGP. While both tests are suitable for use in the clinical and research settings, we would recommend the TUG given the findings of higher test‐retest reliability and as this test requires less space and time to set up and score. Future studies in a larger sample size are warranted to confirm the results of this study. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Physiotherapy Research International)

Are Established Methods of Physiotherapeutic Management for Long‐term Neurological Conditions Applicable to ‘Orphan’ Conditions such as Syringomyelia?
DiscussionSyringomyelia patients report physiotherapy to provide benefits for symptom management and quality of life. Such findings suggest that established rehabilitation techniques in more common conditions may be transferable to those less prevalent. Uptake of physiotherapy was limited, seemingly because of inadequate information, knowledge and resources. To address these deficiencies, further studies should be planned investigating the effectiveness of physiotherapy modalities, such as hydrotherapy, in parallel or in conjunction with surgery and/or pharmacology. Additionally, syringomyelia could be represented alongsid...

Analyzing Movements Development and Evaluation of the Body Awareness Scale Movement Quality (BAS MQ)
ConclusionResults of the study revealed that BAS MQ has a satisfactory factor structure. The inter‐rater reliability and validity were acceptable in a group of individuals with hip OA. BAS MQ could be a useful assessment tool for physiotherapists when evaluating the quality of everyday movements in different patient groups. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Consistency in Administration and Response for the Backward Push and Release Test: A Clinical Assessment of Postural Responses
DiscussionDespite variability in administration and inconsistency in response, different postural response characteristics were detected between patients with different disease states. Based on these results, we will create algorithms to instrument the PRT using inertial movement sensors to collect more sensitive measures of postural responses than observational clinical rating scales. Feedback for appropriate lean angle and calibration for participant height will improve consistency and usefulness of the instrumented PRT. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Physiotherapists' Beliefs About Whiplash‐associated Disorder: A Comparison Between Singapore and Queensland, Australia
ConclusionThe majority of beliefs between physiotherapists in Queensland and Singapore were similar but there were specific differences. Physiotherapists' whiplash beliefs in Queensland and Singapore did not clearly reflect the difference in prevalence of chronic musculoskeletal pain or chronic WAD in Queensland and Singapore. How did the Canterbury Earthquakes Affect Physiotherapists and Physiotherapy Services? A Qualitative Study
DiscussionWe recommend that disaster planning occurs at individual, departmental, practice and professional levels. This planning will enable physiotherapists to better cope in the event of a disaster and would help to provide professional bodies with a cohesive set of skills that can be shared with health agencies and rescue organizations. We recommend that the apparently vital skill of listening is explored through further research in order for it to be better accepted as a core physiotherapy skill. Effectiveness of Task Specific Gait and Balance Exercise 4 Months After Hip Fracture: Protocol of a Randomized Controlled Trial — The Eva‐Hip Study
DiscussionThis paper describes a task specific exercise programme aimed to improve gait and balance after a hip fracture. Inclusion started in February 2011, and the last 1‐year follow‐up is performed in March 2014. Broad inclusion criteria and physiotherapy‐guided home‐based exercises may facilitate the participation from frail patients and thereby increase the generalizability of the findings. Development and completion of the intervention within routine clinical practice will enlighten the implementation of results into clinical practice. Results may add new insight into how physiotherapy can improve gait and th...
