Gait Changes with Balance‐Based Torso‐Weighting in People with Multiple Sclerosis
This study is a non‐randomized controlled experiment. ParticipantsThis study included 20 PwMS and 20 matched healthy controls ProceduresPeople with multiple sclerosis walked on an instrumented mat at their fastest speed for three trials each in two conditions: without BBTW then with BBTW. Healthy controls walked in both conditions at two speeds: their fastest speed and at velocities equivalent to their matched PwMS. ResultsAveraged gait trials showed that, with BBTW, PwMS had significantly increased velocity (p = 0.002), cadence (p = 0.007) and time spent in single‐limb support (p = 0.014), with decreased t...

Reliability of the Senior Fitness Test in Community‐dwelling Older People with Cognitive Impairment
DiscussionThe SFT battery showed high to very high test–retest reliability and thus may be suitable for detecting changes in physical fitness and evaluating physical fitness in older people with cognitive impairment, both in research and for clinical purposes. Factors Influencing Disability due to Low Back Pain Using the Oswestry Disability Questionnaire and the Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale
ConclusionsThe degree of disability from back pain assessed using the ODQ score was influenced by a pain severity and LBP type. Also, QUE score was influenced by a pain severity, LBP type, pain duration and gender. To assess the disability caused by back pain accurately using the ODQ and QUE, various factors affecting the scores of the questionnaire must be considered. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Efficacy of the Star Excursion Balance Test in Detecting Reach Deficits in Subjects with Chronic Low Back Pain
ConclusionStar Excursion Balance Test is an effective and simple tool to identify and measure reach deficits in patients with CLBP. We recommend using SEBT as an outcome measure to identify dynamic balance, multi‐planar excursion and postural control in patients with CLBP. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Functional Limitations due to Fatigue Among Independently Ambulant Stroke Survivors in Osun, South‐Western Nigeria
This study assessed the functional limitations due to fatigue in community‐dwelling stroke survivors undergoing physiotherapy. The differences in functional limitations due to fatigue were determined between sexes, stroke types, sides of affectation, age categories and levels of disability. Relationships between functional limitation due to fatigue and these variables were also determined. MethodsThis was a cross‐sectional study involving 63 stroke survivors (35 male survivors and 28 female survivors) with ages ranging from 45 to 79 years (mean = 53.68 ± 10.95 years). Functional limitation due to fatigue w...

Individualized Physiotherapy in the Treatment of Patellofemoral Pain
ConclusionsIndividualized treatment supplementing local standard physiotherapy for PFP leads to further significant improvement over 2 weeks. This study highlights the importance of assessing patients globally in order to optimize treatment and ongoing improvement. Recognition of different subgroups may guide treatment that should include both local and deficit‐targeted global treatment. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Pain Worlds: Towards the Integration of a Sociocultural Perspective of Pain in Clinical Physical Therapy
Abstract The World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (WHO‐ICF) model has been advocated as a model of function to conceptualize physical therapist practice. Among its advances, the WHO‐ICF model explicitly recognizes the existence of social factors that may influence patients' and clients' understanding of pain. However, understandings of the historical, social and cultural processes that shape the individual and collective experiences of pain and the therapeutic relationship remain limited. We call for a more intentional and sustained dialogue between clinical pra...

Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health in Physiotherapy in Multidisciplinary Vocational Rehabilitation: A Case Study of Low Back Pain
ConclusionThe use of ICF‐based tools in multidisciplinary rehabilitation allows for a comprehensive assessment, common goal setting and coordinated intervention planning. ICF‐based tools like the RehabManagement‐Sheet support the physiotherapist's role within the rehabilitation team by enhancing transparency in goal setting and intervention planning across disciplines. ‘Tell Me About Your Troubles’: Description of Patient–Physiotherapist Interaction During Initial Encounters
ConclusionThis exploratory study examines the interaction between patients and physiotherapists during initial encounters and identifies assumptions underlying pain assessment that shape the therapists' exploration of patients' pain experience. It also shows evidence of the physiotherapists' difficulties to inquire about the patient's perspective. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Physiotherapy Research International)

General Practitioners' Views About an Orthopaedic Clinical Assessment Service
ConclusionGPs saw OCAS as another referral choice for patients suffering orthopaedic pathologies. GPs identified some difficulty in understanding the different services including the various professional roles involved. To assist with their understanding, they described requesting advertising of the different services and the clinicians involved or streamlining of services by provider services. Further detailed research addressing the limitations in this research design is indicated to investigate GP's thoughts and behaviours in relation to referral patterns especially as GPs in the UK took on commissioning for services fr...

Immediate Effects of Talocrural and Subtalar Joint Mobilization on Balance in the Elderly
ConclusionThese results suggested that postural control is improved in static conditions and decreased in dynamic conditions. Therapeutic mobilization of feet and ankles in the elderly provides an immediate improvement in joint range of movement in dorsal and plantar flexion. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Evidence‐based Practice Exposure and Physiotherapy Students' Behaviour during Clinical Placements: A Survey
ConclusionsAn association between the level of EBP exposure and physiotherapy students' EBP behaviour was found for elements such as asking and searching, ability to search for and critically appraise research evidence, and experience of critical appraisal as a barrier. Further research need to explore strategies for EBP exposure throughout the curriculum, regarding content, timing, amount and type of training. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Management of Low Back Pain in Ghana: A Survey of Self‐reported Practice
ConclusionThis first mapping of physiotherapy management of LBP in Ghana shows an overt multimodal approach. There was potential good practice with the high use of exercise and advice, the equally high utilization of passive treatments however showed variance to recommendations of guidelines. The findings of this study have implications for clinical practice and physiotherapy education and research. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Physiotherapy Research International)
