Prostate volume measurement by transrectal ultrasonography: comparison of height obtained by use of transaxial and midsagittal scanning.
CONCLUSIONS: Although prostate volume by TRUS differed according to the method used to measure height, that is, transaxial or midsagittal scanning, we conclude that there are no problems in diagnosing BPE clinically by use of either of the two methods. Laparoscopic stone surgery with the aid of flexible nephroscopy.
CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic stone surgery is a safe and minimally invasive procedure with a high success rate, especially with the aid of flexible nephroscopy, and is not associated with procedure-specific complications. PMID: 25045447 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Relationship between uncommon computed tomography findings and clinical aspects in patients with acute pyelonephritis.
CONCLUSIONS: The uncommon CT findings that were related to aggravated clinical and laboratory parameters of APN patients were perirenal fat infiltration, ureteral wall edema, and renal abscess formation. The inflammatory reaction and tissue destruction may be more aggressive in patients with these CT findings. PMID: 25045448 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Growth inhibition after exposure to transforming growth factor-β1 in human bladder cancer cell lines.
CONCLUSIONS: TGF-β1 did not stimulate cellular proliferation but was a growth inhibitory factor in bladder cancer cells. However, the pattern of its effects depended on the cell line. TGF-β1 achieved growth inhibition by enhancing the level of apoptosis. PMID: 25045449 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Laparoscopic management of a hydatid cyst of the adrenal gland.
We present a case of an adrenal hydatid and its management by laparoscopic aspiration, instillation of scolicidal solution, and partial excision of the cyst. PMID: 25045450 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Vesicoenteric fistula due to bladder squamous cell carcinoma.
We report the case of a 70-year-old male who complained of painless, total gross hematuria. Abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) revealed an approximately 2.7-cm lobulated and contoured enhancing mass in the bladder dome. We performed partial cystectomy of the bladder dome after transurethral resection of the bladder. The biopsy result was bladder squamous cell carcinoma, with infiltrating serosa histopathologically, but the resection margin was free. Postoperatively, follow-up CT was done after 3 months. Follow-up CT revealed an approximately 4.7-cm×4.0-cm lobulated, contoured, and heterogeneous mass in the bladder do...

Current status of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery in pediatric urology.
Authors: Song SH, Kim KS Abstract Laparoscopic procedures for urological diseases in children have been proven to be safe and effective. However, the availability of laparoscopic procedures is still partly limited to experienced, high-volume centers because the procedures are technically demanding. The da Vinci robot system is being used for an increasing variety of reconstructive procedures because of the advantages of this approach, such as motion scaling, greater optical magnification, stereoscopic vision, increased instrument tip dexterity, and tremor filtration. Particularly in pediatric urologic surg...

Associations between presenting symptoms, clinicopathological parameters, and prognosis in a contemporary series of patients with renal cell carcinoma.
CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms that presenting symptoms are associated with tumor characteristics and survival. The majority of RCCs are diagnosed incidentally in patients without any symptoms or with symptoms not related to RCC. Patients in the latter group tend to have a worse prognosis than do patients who are completely asymptomatic. With the increasing number of incidentally diagnosed RCCs, substratification of patients with incidental tumors may be prognostically relevant. Should we place ureteral stents in retroperitoneal laparoscopic ureterolithotomy?: Consideration of surgical techniques and complications.
CONCLUSIONS: RLU is a safe and effective treatment modality for large impacted ureteral stones. In this study, D-J stent placement was not necessary after RLU. In the future, large-scale studies of RLU without D-J stenting, especially on the frequency of the development of complications according to the surgical technique, may be needed. Multimodal treatments of cystine stones: an observational, retrospective single-center analysis of 14 cases.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with cystine stones have high recurrence or regrowth rates and relatively large stone burdens. Adequate treatment schedules must therefore be established in these cases to prevent possible deterioration of renal function. PMID: 25132945 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Impact of transobturator tape treatment on overactive bladder symptoms, particularly nocturia, in patients with mixed urinary incontinence.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that the TOT procedure resulted in an overall significant improvement in OAB symptoms including OAB-related nocturia in patients who presented with MUI. PMID: 25132946 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Effect of histological inflammation on total and free serum prostate-specific antigen values in patients without clinically detectable prostate cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: Subclinical inflammation has a significant influence on fPSA in patients with tPSA<10 ng/mL but without PC or clinical prostatitis. Subclinical inflammation is not characterized by elevated tPSA alone but also by a decreased fPSA, a tendency similar to that in PC. Adolescent varicocele: are somatometric parameters a cause?
CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that patients with varicoceles were significantly taller and had a lower BMI than did patients without varicoceles, especially among adolescents. Carefully designed future studies may be needed. PMID: 25132948 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Are clinical, laboratory, and imaging markers suitable predictors of vesicoureteral reflux in children with their first febrile urinary tract infection?
CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed fever>38.2℃ and dimercaptosuccinic acid renal scanning as the best predictive markers for vesicoureteral reflux in children with their first febrile urinary tract infection. In addition, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, positive urinary nitrite test, hyaline cast, and renal ultrasound are the best predictive markers for high-grade vesicoureteral reflux. Altered gene expression profile after exposure to transforming growth factor β1 in the 253J human bladder cancer cell line.
CONCLUSIONS: A list of genes showing significantly altered expression profiles after TGF-β1 treatment was made according to five highly cohesive clusters. The data suggest that the growth inhibitory effect of TGF-β1 in bladder cancer may occur through the Smad-dependent pathway, possibly via activation of the extracellular signal-related kinase 1 and Jun amino-terminal kinases Mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway.
