Current Status of Radical Prostatectomy for High-Risk Prostate Cancer.
Authors: Kang HW, Lee JY, Kwon JK, Jeh SU, Jung HD, Choi YD Abstract Despite the wide application of prostate-specific antigen-based screening leading to a profound stage migration in prostate cancer (PC), a significant percentage of men are still being diagnosed with clinically high-risk disease that requires aggressive treatment. Optimal management in these patients remains challenging, and strong advocates for radical prostatectomy (RP), radiotherapy, androgen deprivation therapy, and, increasingly, a multimodal approach abound. Currently, surgery for high-risk PC is frequently applied. RP offers an att...

Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease After Nephrectomy for Renal Cell Carcinoma.
Authors: Choi SK, Song C Abstract The incidence of low-stage renal cell carcinoma is rising and is observed to demonstrate excellent prognosis following surgical treatment irrespective of method. However, several epidemiologic observational and population-based studies suggest that radical nephrectomy is associated with increased adverse renal outcomes such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) compared with partial nephrectomy. This is suggested in turn to lead to increased mortality via an increase in cardiovascular complications and mortality. Prospective data are scarce, and there are conflicting data as wel...

Predicting Recurrence and Progression of Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer in Korean Patients: A Comparison of the EORTC and CUETO Models.
CONCLUSIONS: Both scoring systems, especially the CUETO model, showed value in predicting recurrence and progression in Korean patients, which will help in individualizing treatment and follow-up schedules. PMID: 25324946 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Usefulness of Urine Cytology as a Routine Work-up in the Detection of Recurrence in Patients With Prior Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer: Practicality and Cost-Effectiveness.
CONCLUSIONS: Routine urine cytology may not be useful for follow-up of bladder cancer in terms of practicality and cost-effectiveness. Application of urine cytology needs to be adjusted according to each patient. PMID: 25324947 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Long-Term Follow-up Results of Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty.
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term follow-up results support laparoscopic pyeloplasty as the standard treatment for ureteropelvic junction obstruction. Drained amount is a risk factor for failure of the operation. PMID: 25324948 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Febrile urinary tract infection after prostate biopsy and quinolone resistance.
CONCLUSIONS: Quinolone resistance is the main cause of postbiopsy infections in our center. We suggest that further evaluation is required to validate similar trends. Novel strategies to find alternative prophylactic agents are also necessary. PMID: 25324949 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Prophylactic Phenylephrine for Iatrogenic Priapism: A Pilot Study With Peyronie's Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The reversal of erections with phenylephrine after intracavernosal injections of alprostadil to prevent iatrogenic priapism can be effective without increased adverse effects. PMID: 25324950 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Role of urinary levels of endothelin-1, monocyte chemotactic Peptide-1, and N-acetyl glucosaminidase in predicting the severity of obstruction in hydronephrotic neonates.
CONCLUSIONS: The urinary MCP-1/Cr ratio is significantly elevated in neonates with severe obstruction requiring surgical intervention. Based upon these results, urinary MCP-1/Cr may be useful in identification of severe obstructive hydronephrosis in neonates. PMID: 25324951 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Expression of α1 Receptor and Nitric Oxide Synthase in Oophorectomized and Estrogen-Supplemented Rat Bladder and Urethra.
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that estrogen depletion increases NOS and α1 receptor expression in the rat bladder. However, these changes could be restored by estrogen replacement therapy. PMID: 25324952 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Unclassified mucinous renal cell carcinoma: a rare histopathological entity.
We present the case of a previously healthy 76-year-old woman who underwent a robotic-assisted laparoscopic right nephrectomy for a 5-cm heterogeneously enhancing right renal mass. Pathology revealed mucin-producing epithelial RCC. We discuss the presentation and pathological features of this case and comment on its definitive treatment. Management of Pelvic Organ Prolapse.
Authors: Choi KH, Hong JY Abstract Quality of life is adversely affected by pelvic organ prolapse, the prevalence of which is increasing because of the persistently growing older population. Today, the tension-free vaginal mesh kit has grown in popularity owing to its comparable cure rate to traditional reconstructive surgery and the feasibility of an early return to normal life. However, significant debate remains over the long-term cure rate and the safety of tension-free vaginal mesh in the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends obtaining informed consent about the safety and cu...

Effect of Varicocelectomy on Male Infertility.
Authors: Cho KS, Seo JT Abstract Varicocele is the most common cause of male infertility and is generally correctable or at least improvable by various surgical and radiologic techniques. Therefore, it seems simple and reasonable that varicocele should be treated in infertile men with varicocele. However, the role of varicocele repair for the treatment of subfertile men has been questioned during the past decades. Although varicocele repair can induce improvement of semen quality, the obvious benefit of spontaneous pregnancy has not been shown through several meta-analyses. Recently, a well-designed random...

Men's Health Index: A Pragmatic Approach to Stratifying and Optimizing Men's Health.
CONCLUSIONS: The concept of assessing, stratifying, and optimizing men's health should be incorporated into routine health care, and this can be implemented by using the MHI. This index is particularly useful to primary care physicians who are in a strategic position to engage men at the peri-retirement age in a conversation about their life goals based on their current and predicted health status. Clinicopathologic differences between prostate cancers detected during initial and repeat transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: Cancers detected at repeat biopsy tend to have lower Gleason scores and stages than cancers detected at initial biopsy. The present study shows that repeat biopsy is needed in patients with a persistently high PSA or abnormal DRE findings. PMID: 25405013 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)
