Evaluation of holmium laser for transurethral deroofing of severe and multiloculated prostatic abscesses.
CONCLUSIONS: Transurethral holmium laser deroofing of prostatic abscesses ensures successful drainage of the entire abscess cavity. Because we resolved the predisposing conditions of prostatic abscess, such as bladder outlet obstruction and prostatic calcification, by simultaneously conducting HoLEP, there was no recurrence of the prostatic abscesses after surgery. We recommend our method in patients requiring transurethral drainage. PMID: 25685303 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Delayed redo pyeloplasty fails to recover lost renal function after failed pyeloplasty: Early sonographic changes that correlate with a loss of differential renal function.
CONCLUSIONS: Redo pyeloplasty should be considered in cases of failed pyeloplasty to preserve renal function and obtain relief from symptoms. If patients show severe deterioration of DRF or a decrease in RCT after initial pyeloplasty, preservation of DRF in these patients after redo pyeloplasty could be difficult. Therefore, redo pyeloplasty should be performed before severe deterioration of DRF or decrease in RCT. PMID: 25685304 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Ventral inlay buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty: A novel surgical technique for the management of urethral stricture disease.
Authors: Kovell RC, Terlecki RP Abstract To describe the novel technique of ventral inlay substitution urethroplasty for the management of male anterior urethral stricture disease. A 58-year-old gentleman with multifocal bulbar stricture disease measuring 7 cm in length was treated using a ventral inlay substitution urethroplasty. A dorsal urethrotomy was created, and the ventral urethral plated was incised. The edges of the urethral plate were mobilized without violation of the ventral corpus spongiosum. A buccal mucosa graft was harvested and affixed as a ventral inlay to augment the caliber of the ureth...

Metabolic effects of androgen deprivation therapy.
Authors: Choi SM, Kam SC Abstract The therapeutic effects and side effects of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), which is a main treatment method for metastatic prostate cancer, are well known, but the metabolic effects have only recently been studied. This review describes the effects of ADT on body habitus, insulin resistance, lipid profiles, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The review was done by using KoreaMed and PubMed to search the medical literature related to prostate cancer, ADT, body habitus, lipid profile, diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrom...

The association of 5-alpha reductase type 2 (SRD5A2) gene polymorphisms with prostate cancer in a Korean population.
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that there was no significant association between SRD5A2 SNPs and the risk of prostate cancer in the Korean population. However, we found that some SNPs and 1 haplotype influenced PSA level, Gleason score, and clinical stage. PMID: 25598933 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Expression of survivin in squamous cell carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder: A comparative immunohistochemical study.
CONCLUSIONS: Unlike in transitional cell carcinoma, alteration of survivin expression in squamous cell carcinoma occurs less frequently and is not associated with features of tumor aggression or patient outcome. These findings raise a question: are urinary bladder carcinoma patients with squamous cell carcinoma type suitable candidates for survivin vaccine? This is an important question to be answered before approving the vaccine in management. PMID: 25598934 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Impact of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma and lymphovascular invasion after radical nephroureterectomy.
CONCLUSIONS: AC does not seem to reduce mortality in patients with advanced upper tract urothelial carcinoma after RNU. In the subgroup of patients with LVI, AC had a positive impact on cancer-specific survival and overall survival. LVI would be helpful for selecting patients who are appropriate for AC. Standardized analysis of complications after robot-assisted radical cystectomy: Korea University Hospital experience.
CONCLUSIONS: The present results show that the complication rate reported by use of a standardized methodology after robotic radical cystectomy is still considerable although comparable to that of contemporary robot series. EBL, operative time, and diversion methods were predictors of complications. PMID: 25598936 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)

Can stone density on plain radiography predict the outcome of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy for ureteral stones?
CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that larger stone size, longer time to ESWL, and ureteral stones with a radiodensity greater than that of the 12th rib may be at a relatively higher risk of ESWL failure 1 month after the procedure. Ureteral stricture formation after ureteroscope treatment of impacted calculi: A prospective study.
CONCLUSIONS: This prospective study failed to identify any predictable factors for ureteral stricture formation. It is proposed that all patients undergo a simple postoperative KUB ultrasound screening 3 months after undergoing endoscopic treatment for impacted ureteral stones. Association between renal function, erectile function and coronary artery disease: Detection with coronary angiography.
CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed that the presence and severity of ED are linked to the number of occluded vessels as documented by coronary angiography. The presence of ED and reduced GFR are associated with single-vessel coronary artery disease. This relationship can be used to predict the likelihood of coronary artery disease. Heart failure as the first manifestation of renal cell carcinoma.
We report the rare case of a patient with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) who initially presented to the hospital with symptoms of cardiac failure. Preoperative cardiac studies did not reveal any underlying ischemia. After resection of a large 14-cm left renal tumor, cardiac function was noted to improve dramatically. We discuss this case of concomitant RCC and nonischemic cardiomyopathy. PMID: 25598941 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Urology)
