Prevalence of Obesity and Overweight in Iranian Children under 5 Years: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Conclusion: Although, there was a high heterogeneity among the results of the articles included in the meta-analysis, however, the prevalence of obesity and overweigh is higher in Iranian children under 5 years. Therefore, parents and the health system need to pay more attention to lifestyle, nutritional habits and physical activity of these children. Phenotypes of allergic diseases in children and their application in clinical situations.
Authors: Lee E, Hong SJ Abstract Allergic disease, including allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis, are huge heterogeneous diseases, encompassing diverse phenotypes with different pathogenesis. Phenotype studies on allergic diseases are important in that they can facilitate the identification of risk factors and the underlying pathophysiologies, resulting in the application of more effective treatment, selection of better response to the treatment, and prediction of prognosis for each phenotype. In the early phase of phenotype studies in allergic diseases, artificial classifications were usually...

Predictors and management of intravenous immunoglobulin-resistant Kawasaki disease.
Authors: Song MS Abstract Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis that mainly affects younger children. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) resistant cases are at increasing risk for coronary artery complications. The strategy on prediction of potential nonresponders and treatment of IVIG-resistant patients is now controversial. In this review the definition and predictors of IVIG-resistant KD and current evidence to guide management are discussed. PMID: 30999718 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Evaluation of hematologic profile may be needed for patients treated with oxcarbazepine.
Conclusion: OXC-induced leukopenia is not rare and may result in pancytopenia. Patients being treated with OXC should be regularly monitored for abnormal CBC profiles. PMID: 30999724 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Practice for Preterm Patent Ductus Arteriosus; Focusing on the Hemodynamic Significance and the Impact on the Neonatal Outcomes.
Authors: Lee JA Abstract Hemodynamically significant preterm patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) has been known to affect mortality, morbidities such as necrotizing enterocolitis, intra-ventricular hemorrhage, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and adverse long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants, especially in very low birth weight infants. However, recent researches indicate that there is no consensus about the causal relationship between the PDA and neonatal outcomes, the benefit or lack of treatment, the factors guiding the need to treat, and about the optimal treatment strategies. Such uncertainty...

The effect of high fat dietary modification and nutritional status on the outcome of critically ill ventilated children: Single-center study.
Conclusion: The high-fat enteral feeding protocol may contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide tension with mild hypertriglyceridemia and negligible gastrointestinal intolerances as potential adverse effects. Optimization of nutritional status rather than dietary modification may improve ventilatory and survival outcomes in critically ill ventilated children. The relation between serum levels of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) and necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm neonates.
Conclusion: patients with NEC had significantly lower serum levels of EGF (p<.001) indicating that EGF could be a reliable marker of NEC in preterm neonates. PMID: 30999731 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Benefits and risks of therapeutic alternatives for macrolide resistant Mycoplasma Pneumoniae pneumonia in children.
Authors: Yang HJ Abstract Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) has been generally susceptible to macrolides, however emergence of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MRMP) has made the treatment of MPP challenging. MRMP rapidly spread after 2000s, especially in the Eastern Asia. MRMPs are more common in children and adolescents than in adults, which is likely related to the frequent use of macrolides for treatments of MP infections in children. The MRMP is unlikely to be related with clinical, laboratory, or radiological- severity, although it is likely to cause longer persistence of symp...

Trend in the use of antibiotics in Korean children.
Authors: Choe YJ, Shin JY Abstract Inappropriate use of antibiotics is the most important factor that causes an increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics, thus affecting patient outcomes. Multidrug-resistant bacteria have become a serious public health threat causing significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Korea, the burden of antibiotic resistant bacteria have become an important public health issues. There is increasing evidence of overuse and misuse of antibiotics in Korea observed from cohorts of large sample size. In specific, antibiotic use in children should be highlighted because of...
