Effect of tuberculosis treatment on leptin levels, weight gain, and percentage body fat in Indonesian children.
CONCLUSION: Leptin level, BW, and BFP increased throughout the course of anti-TB treatment, compared with pretreatment values. Further research is needed to compare the results with data for healthy children. PMID: 28461825 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Effects of clarithromycin treatment in scrub typhus in children: comparison with chloramphenicol and azithromycin.
CONCLUSION: Clarithromycin was as effective as chloramphenicol and azithromycin in pediatric scrub typhus patients and may be used as a first-line treatment drug. PMID: 28461826 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Genetics of hereditary nephrotic syndrome: a clinical review.
Authors: Ha TS Abstract Advances in podocytology and genetic techniques have expanded our understanding of the pathogenesis of hereditary steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). In the past 20 years, over 45 genetic mutations have been identified in patients with hereditary SRNS. Genetic mutations on structural and functional molecules in podocytes can lead to serious injury in the podocytes themselves and in adjacent structures, causing sclerotic lesions such as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis or diffuse mesangial sclerosis. This paper provides an update on the current knowledge of podocyte genes ...

Postdischarge growth assessment in very low birth weight infants.
CONCLUSION: Advancements in neonatal care have improved the catch-up growth of VLBW infants, but this is insufficient. Careful observation and aggressive interventions, especially in SGA and ELBW infants, are needed. PMID: 28392821 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Maternal food restrictions during breastfeeding.
CONCLUSION: Most mothers restricted certain foods unnecessarily. Literature review identified no foods that mothers should absolutely avoid during breastfeeding unless the infant reacts negatively to the food. PMID: 28392822 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Etiology and clinical characteristics of fever of unknown origin in children: a 15-year experience in a single center.
CONCLUSION: Almost half of our patients were left without diagnosis. Although it has been known that infectious disease was most common cause of pediatric FUO in the past, undiagnosed portion of FUO have now increased due to development of diagnostic techniques for infectious diseases. Posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disorder after pediatric solid organ transplantation: experiences of 20 years in a single center.
CONCLUSION: While the outcome was favorable in that all patients achieved complete remission, some patients still had allograft loss or mortality. To prevent PTLD and improve its outcome, monitoring for EBV infection is essential, which would lead to appropriate modification of immunosuppression and enhanced surveillance for PTLD. A compound heterozygous mutation in the FMO3 gene: the first pediatric case causes fish odor syndrome in Korea.
Authors: Kim JH, Cho SM, Chae JH Abstract Trimethylaminuria (TMAuria), known as "fish odor syndrome," is a congenital metabolic disorder characterized by an odor resembling that of rotting fish. This odor is caused by the secretion of trimethylamine (TMA) in the breath, sweat, and body secretions and the excretion of TMA along with urine. TMAuria is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3). Most TMAuria cases are caused by missense mutations, but nonsense mutations have also been reported in these cases. Here, we describe the identification of a novel ...

Management issues of congenital adrenal hyperplasia during the transition from pediatric to adult care.
Authors: Choi JH, Yoo HW Abstract Steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency is the most prevalent form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), accounting for approximately 95% of cases. With the advent of newborn screening and hormone replacement therapy, most children with CAH survive into adulthood. Adolescents and adults with CAH experience a number of complications, including short stature, obesity, infertility, tumor, osteoporosis, and reduced quality of life. Transition from pediatric to adult care and management of long-term complications are challenging for both patients and health-care providers. Psychos...

Relationship between serum sodium level and coronary artery abnormality in Kawasaki disease.
CONCLUSION: The severity of vascular inflammation in acute KD with hyponatremia might worsen the prognosis of coronary vasculature. Although no statistically significant correlation was found between the initial serum sodium levels and coronary arteriopathy in the patients with KD in this study, a long-term follow-up study with a larger number of enrolled patients should be designed in the future to elucidate the relationship between serum sodium level and coronary arteriopathy in patients with KD. The serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D for maximal suppression of parathyroid hormone in children: the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone.
CONCLUSION: These data suggest that a vitamin D level of 18.0 ng/mL could be the criterion for 25-OHD deficiency in children at the inflection point of the maximal suppression of PTH. PMID: 28289433 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Malformations of cortical development: genetic mechanisms and diagnostic approach.
Authors: Lee J Abstract Malformations of cortical development are rare congenital anomalies of the cerebral cortex, wherein patients present with intractable epilepsy and various degrees of developmental delay. Cases show a spectrum of anomalous cortical formations with diverse anatomic and morphological abnormalities, a variety of genetic causes, and different clinical presentations. Brain magnetic resonance imaging has been of great help in determining the exact morphologies of cortical malformations. The hypothetical mechanisms of malformation include interruptions during the formation of cerebral corte...

The correlation of depression with Internet use and body image in Korean adolescents.
CONCLUSION: Prevalence of depression was 13.8% in adolescents in Seoul, Korea, in July 2008. Female sex, age, daily Internet use duration, weekly Internet use frequency, physical activity, and dissatisfaction with one's body image independently increased risk of depression.
