Recent advances in pediatric interventional cardiology.
Authors: Kim SH Abstract During the last 10 years, there have been major technological achievements in pediatric interventional cardiology. In addition, there have been several advances in cardiac imaging, especially in 3-dimensional imaging of echocardiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and cineangiography. Therefore, more types of congenital heart diseases can be treated in the cardiac catheter laboratory today than ever before. Furthermore, lesions previously considered resistant to interventional therapies can now be managed with high success rates. The hybrid approach has enable...

Effects of cord blood vitamin D levels on the risk of neonatal sepsis in premature infants.
CONCLUSION: There was no significant relationship between the cord blood vitamin D levels and the risk of neonatal sepsis in premature infants. PMID: 29042866 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

The impact of an educational intervention on parents' decisions to vaccinate their < 60-month-old children against influenza.
CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that a specific educational intervention involving caregivers is very effective in increasing the influenza vaccination coverage of children aged less than 60 months. PMID: 29042867 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Characteristics and prognosis of hepatic cytomegalovirus infection in children: 10 years of experience at a university hospital in Korea.
CONCLUSION: In children with CMV hepatitis, fever was the most common symptom at presentation, and jaundice was the most common clinical feature of hepatic CMV infection in infants younger than 3 months of age. Hepatic CMV infection in immunocompetent children is often a self-limited illness that does not require antiviral therapy, as most patients in this study had favorable outcomes. Clinical characteristics of hypertensive encephalopathy in pediatric patients.
CONCLUSION: We conclude that the patients with renal-origin hypertension had a more severe clinical course than those with non-renal-origin hypertension. Furthermore, the renal-origin group was highly associated with PRES on brain MRI. PMID: 29042869 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Update of minimally invasive surfactant therapy.
In conclusion, MIST is gentle, safe, feasible, and effective in preterm infants, and is widely used for surfactant administration with noninvasive respiratory support by neonatologists. However, further studies are needed to resolve uncertainties in the MIST method, including infant selection, optimal surfactant dosage and administration method, and need for sedation. Application of array comparative genomic hybridization in Korean children under 6 years old with global developmental delay.
CONCLUSION: As chromosomal microarray can elucidate the cause of previously unexplained developmental delay, it should be considered as a first-tier cytogenetic diagnostic test for children with unexplained developmental delay. PMID: 29042871 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Accuracy of maximal expiratory flow-volume curve curvilinearity and fractional exhaled nitric oxide for detection of children with atopic asthma.
CONCLUSION: These data suggest that the combined use of the curvilinearity of the MEFV curve and FeNO is a useful tool to differentiate between children with and without atopic asthma. PMID: 29042872 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Comparison of cytokine expression profiles in infants with a rhinovirus induced lower respiratory tract infection with or without wheezing: a comparison with respiratory syncytial virus.
CONCLUSION: In comparison with RSV-induced LRTI, RV-induced LRTI combined with wheezing showed similar IFN-γ and IL-10 levels, which may have an important regulatory function. PMID: 29042873 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Serum neuron specific enolase is increased in pediatric acute encephalitis syndrome.
CONCLUSION: AES cases showed higher levels of serum NSE. These results indicate that serum NSE is a good indicator of neuronal brain injury. PMID: 29042874 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Chorioamnionitis: Is a major player in the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia?
Authors: Choi CW Abstract Chorioamnionitis is an inflammation in the fetal membranes or placenta. When chorioamnionitis develops, fetal lungs are exposed to inflammatory cytokines and mediators via amniotic fluid. Because inflammation plays a pivotal role in the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease of prematurity, fetal lung inflammation induced by chorioamnionitis has been considered to be one of the major pathogenetic factors for BPD. Although there have been a number of studies that demonstrated the relationship between chorioamnionitis and BPD, there are still controv...

Association of Toll-like receptor 2-positive monocytes with coronary artery lesions and treatment nonresponse in Kawasaki disease.
CONCLUSION: We showed that measuring FTLR2% before the initial treatment could be useful in predicting CAL development with better sensitivity than sIL-10 and with results comparable to sIL-10 results for the prediction of IVIG resistance in patients with KD. However, further studies are necessary to validate FTLR2% as a marker of prognosis and severity of KD. PMID: 28861111 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Relationship between vitamin D levels and intravenous immunoglobulin resistance in Kawasaki disease.
CONCLUSION: Low vitamin D levels are associated with resistance to intravenous immunoglobulin therapy in KD. Vitamin D deficiency might be a risk factor for immunoglobulin resistance in KD. PMID: 28861112 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli ST131 in urinary tract infections in children.
CONCLUSION: ST131 E. coli isolates were prevalent uropathogens in children at a single medical center in Korea between 2011 and 2014. Although ST131 isolates showed higher rates of antimicrobial resistance, clinical presentation and outcomes of patients were similar to those of patients infected with non-ST131 isolates.
