The Prevalence of Central Hypertension Defined by a Central Blood Pressure Type I Device and Its Association with Target Organ Damage in Community-Dwelling Elderly Chinese: The Northern Shanghai Study
We aimed to investigate the prevalence of central hypertension and its association with target organ damage (TOD). 1983 community-dwelling elderly Chinese were recruited for this analysis. Brachial and central blood pressure (BP) were measured by a oscillometric device and SphygmoCor (type I device), respectively. Brachial hypertension was defined by brachial systolic (SBP)/diastolic BP (DBP) ≥140/90mmHg or using antihypertensive medications. Central hypertension was defined by central SBP/DBP≥130/90mmHg or using antihypertensive medications. (Source: Journal of the American Society of Hypertension)

From the Editor
It has been over a month since the release of the new American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines on high blood pressure.1 Comments in the medical literature and the lay media have accumulated at a rapid pace. Some articles are highly supportive of the new guidelines, whereas others are deeply critical. Here are some of the critical questions that have been asked. Are there cardiometabolic benefits of low-intensity physical activity in at-risk adults?
Cardiometabolic benefits of moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) are well documented for more than 30  years.1 Yet, only a minority of individuals attain recommended levels of MVPA. MVPA targets are more rarely attained by individuals at greatest risk for cardiometabolic disease.2 At-risk groups include the elderly and obese and those with diabetes or hypertension. In this context, the recent paper by Dempsey et al,3 “Interrupting prolonged sitting with brief bouts of light walking of simple resistance activities (SRA) reduces resting blood pressure and plasma noradrenaline in type 2 diabetes,” is of keen i...

Common variants at somatostatin are significantly associated with hypertension incidence in smoking and drinking populations
This study aimed to evaluate whether SST and GHRH contribute to genetic susceptibility to hypertension. A case-control study consisting of 2012 hypertensive patients and 2210 matched control individuals was performed, and t hree tagging single-nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped. The association of these single-nucleotide polymorphisms with hypertension and ischemic stroke was further evaluated among 4098 participants in a follow-up study. This study aimed to evaluate whether SST and GHRH contribute to genetic susceptibility to hypertension. A case-control study consisted of 2012 hypertensive cases and 2210 matched controls, and three tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (tagSNPs) were genotyped. The association of these SNPs with hypertension and ischemic stroke were further evaluated among 4098 participants in a follow-up study. (Source: Journal of the American Society of Hypertension)

Urine albumin is a superior predictor of preeclampsia compared to urine plasminogen in type I diabetes patients
The objective of the study was to test whether urinary total plasmin(ogen)/creatinine ratio and plasma concentration of aldosterone were better predictors of PE in pregnant women with T1DM compared with urine albumin and haemoglobin A1C. (Source: Journal of the American Society of Hypertension)

Control of cardiovascular disease risk factors among patients with type II diabetes in a primary-care setting in Beijing
The aim of this study was to assess the control of blood glucose, blood pressure (BP), serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and other cardiovascular disease risk factors among patients with type II diabetes in a primary-care setting in Beijing. We performed a cross-sectional, multi-center survey of 4056 patients with type II diabetes aged ≥40 years. In total, 22.6% were current smokers, 10.8% often drank alcohol, 29.0% were obese, and 67.4% participated in adequate levels of physical activity. Effects of Orlistat on Blood Pressure: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 27 randomized controlled clinical trials
Obesity and high blood pressure (BP) are strongly related and weight loss is mightily associated with a significant BP decrease. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to evaluate and quantify the BP decrease associated with orlistat use in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Urine albumin is a superior predictor of preeclampsia compared to urine plasminogen in type-1 diabetes patients
Pregnant women with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) are at increased risk of developing preeclampsia (PE). Plasminogen is aberrantly filtrated from plasma into tubular fluid in PE patients and activated to plasmin. Plasmin activates the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in the collecting ducts potentially causing impaired sodium excretion, suppression of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and hypertension in PE. Patients with Hypertensive Responses to Exercise or Dobutamine Stress Testing Differ In Resting Hypertensive Phenotype
Little is known of the importance of echocardiographic measures of resting systemic vascular resistance (SVR), cardiac output (CO) and diastolic function in the development of a hypertensive response during dobutamine stress echocardiography.
