Transposition of Both Oblique Muscles Combined With Lateral Rectus Botulinum Toxin Injection and Globe Fixation Suture in the Treatment of Congenital Cranial Nerve III Palsy

The authors report a new technique to treat complete cranial nerve III palsy. A 15-year-old girl underwent botulinum toxin injection into the lateral rectus muscle, nasal transposition of both the superior and inferior oblique muscles to the medial rectus insertion, and absorbable suture globe fixation to the nasal orbital periosteum. Six months postoperatively, her primary position eye deviation was within 12 prism diopters of orthotropia with limitation of ductions in all directions.[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2017;54:e13 –e17].
(Source: Journal of Pediatri...

Malignant Ciliary Body Medulloepithelioma With Brain and Parotid Metastasis

A 12-year-old girl with malignant ciliary medulloepithelioma and parotid metastasis was treated with semi-exenteration of the orbit and external beam radiotherapy. She had brain metastasis 7 months later and was treated with salvage chemotherapy. The patient was disease free at 11 months of follow-up. In aggressive cases, exenteration combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy are necessary for disease control.[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2017;54:e18 –e22].
(Source: Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus)

Managing Flap Tears of the Rectus Muscles

Traumatic and iatrogenic flap avulsions of rectus muscles are infrequently reported. Three cases of rectus muscle flap tears are described demonstrating use of appropriate imaging for preoperative diagnosis, intraoperative findings to confirm diagnosis, and modalities of surgical management.[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2017;54:e23 –e26].
(Source: Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus)

Intravitreal Ranibizumab Injection in Peripapillary CNVM Related to Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension

Peripapillary choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM) may develop in papilledema related to idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Update on Orthokeratology in Managing Progressive Myopia in Children: Efficacy, Mechanisms, and Concerns

Myopia is an important public health issue, and high myopia may lead to severe complications if left untreated. Orthokeratology lenses, worn overnight to reshape the cornea, are one of many recent modalities used to slow down the progression of myopia in children. This treatment has been proven successful, as evidenced by decreased spherical refractive error and axial length relative to the control at interval follow-up ranging from 6 months to 5 years. In this systematic review, the authors collected published controlled studies that analyzed the efficacy of orthokeratology lens wear and calculated longitudinal r...

Intraocular Pressure Changes Following Intravitreal Melphalan and Topotecan for the Treatment of Retinoblastoma With Vitreous Seeding

Agreement Between Three Optical Coherence Tomography Devices to Assess the Insertion Distance and Thickness of Horizontal Rectus Muscles
Conclusions:
The three OCT devices permitted accurate and reproducible measurements of the limbus insertion distance and the thickness of the horizontal rectus muscles, showing moderate to good agreement between the SS-OCT and the two SD-OCT instruments.

[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 201X;XX(X):XX –XX.]

(Source: Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus)

Four-dimensional Microscope-Integrated Optical Coherence Tomography to Visualize Suture Depth in Strabismus Surgery

The authors report the use of swept-source microscope-integrated optical coherence tomography (SS-MIOCT), capable of live four-dimensional (three-dimensional across time) intraoperative imaging, to directly visualize suture depth during lateral rectus resection. Key surgical steps visualized in this report included needle depth during partial and full-thickness muscle passes along with scleral passes.[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2017;54:e1 –e5.]
(Source: Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus)

Detection of Minimally Visible Recurrent Retinoblastoma by Hand-held Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography

A 2-month-old male infant with bilateral familial retinoblastoma was treated with intravenous chemotherapy and focal adjuvant therapy. At 5 months of follow-up, fundus examination and ultrasonography disclosed no recurrence; however, hand-held spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) demonstrated subclinical recurrence within a previous regression scar. Subsequent treatment led to flat scar. Hand-held SD-OCT can be a useful tool for detection of subclinical recurrent retinoblastoma.[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2017;54:e6 –e8.]
(Source: Journal of ...

Three Cases of Exotropic Moebius Syndrome

Moebius syndrome is characterized by congenital facial palsy and limitation in horizontal gaze. The surgical results of the exotropic pattern are rare and have not been published before. The authors report three cases of exotropic Moebius syndrome. Maximal weakening of the lateral rectus muscles followed by strengthening of the medial recti in exotropic Moebius syndrome can improve exotropia significantly. Most of these cases also need some measures to relieve the often associated severe dry eye.[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2017;54:e9 –e12.]
(Source: Journal o...
