Effects of outside air temperature on the preparation of antineoplastic drug solutions in biological safety cabinets
Conclusion These results suggest that the biological safety cabinet temperature decreases when cool winter air is drawn into the biological safety cabinet, affecting the solubilization of antineoplastic agents. We suggest that a decrease in biological safety cabinet temperature may increase the time required to admix antineoplastic agents, thereby increasing the time for which outpatients must wait for chemotherapy. Treatment of rotavirus-associated diarrhea using enteral immunoglobulins for pediatric stem cell transplant patients
This study represents a single-center experience of using multiple daily doses of enteral immunoglobulins in four pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients with confirmed rotavirus infections. Four courses of enteral immunoglobulin administration were included for analysis. Clinical characteristics recorded included duration of diarrhea symptoms, frequency of bowel movements, and consistency of stool. Four single courses of enteral immunoglobulins in four patients were included for analysis. Patient age range was from 10 months to 14 years. Three out of four courses observed displayed an improvement in diarrhea...

Recurrent metastatic anal cancer treated with modified paclitaxel, ifosfamide, and cisplatin and third-line mitomycin/cetuximab
Conclusions Paclitaxel, ifosfamide, and cisplatin is highly active in metastatic setting in selected patients. Cetuximab based regimen can be valuable option as second or third line. Paclitaxel, ifosfamide, and cisplatin and mitomycin and cetuximab can be available options for unmet need in metastatic anal cancer. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Hemolytic anemia in two patients with glioblastoma multiforme: A possible interaction between vorinostat and dapsone
We present two patients with glioblastoma multiforme who developed severe hemolytic anemia shortly after initiating therapy with vorinostat, a pan-active histone deacetylase inhibitor, while on prophylactic dapsone. There are several potential mechanisms by which histone deacetylase inhibition may alter dapsone metabolism including changes in hepatic acetylation or N-glucuronidation leading to an increase in the bioavailability of dapsone’s hematotoxic metabolites. In addition, vorinostat may lead to increased hemolysis through inhibition of heat shock protein-90, a chaperone protein that maintains the integrity of t...

The role of anthracyclines in the treatment of early breast cancer
We review the use of anthracyclines, their associated cardiotoxicity, and the role of taxanes in the treatment of early breast cancer. The efficacy of anthracyclines has been proven in multiple large cohort trials and meta-analyses. The addition of a taxane to an anthracycline-based regimen in the adjuvant setting has improved the disease-free survival and overall survival in patients with early breast cancer. The use of the monoclonal antibody trastuzumab combined with an anthracycline and taxane regimen has had significant benefit both in disease-free survival and overall survival in patients with human epidermal growth ...

Does gastric acid suppression affect sunitinib efficacy in patients with advanced or metastatic renal cell cancer?
Conclusion: There was a significant difference in progression-free survival and overall survival between the acid suppressed and no acid suppression groups. Further research is required to confirm this potential interaction. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

An assessment of risk factors associated with ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy in a large academic cancer center
Conclusions This is the first study to demonstrate that patients with sarcoma experienced ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy more often than those with lymphoma. For all patients, predisposing factors for ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy included previous cisplatin exposure, concomitant opioids and CYP2B6 inhibitors. Laboratory values that increased ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy risk included low serum albumin, increased serum creatinine, and increased hemoglobin. A comparison of toxicity and health care resource use between eribulin, capecitabine, gemcitabine, and vinorelbine in patients with metastatic breast cancer treated in a community oncology setting
Conclusions Eribulin demonstrated a comparable patient safety profile to gemcitabine and vinorelbine, even when administered after three lines of prior therapies. Capecitabine was generally used in earlier lines, had less neutropenia and anemia, but more treatment discontinuations due to toxicity. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Adherence to antiemetic guidelines and control of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in a large hospital
Conclusion: Our study confirms low adherence with both local and international recommendations for antiemetic prescriptions. However, we could not prove that adherence involves a CINV reduction. Adherence did not seem to be influenced by the doctor's perception of the patient's risk of emesis. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Cisplatin-induced bradycardia and the importance of the QT interval
Cisplatin is a very common chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of gynecologic malignancies, including cervical, ovarian, and endometrial cancers. Bradycardia is a rare, though potentially severe, side effect of this medication. Here we present the case of a young woman with ovarian cancer who demonstrated significant short-lived cardiotoxicity associated with cisplatin treatment. Oxaliplatin-induced immune-mediated cytopenias: A case report and literature review
Oxaliplatin is a third-generation platinum antineoplastic agent that commonly causes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, myelosuppression, and peripheral neuropathy. Less common adverse effects that are increasingly being reported include acute immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and pancytopenia. Here, we report a patient case of suspected oxaliplatin-induced immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and a thorough literature evaluation of acute oxaliplatin-induced immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and pancytopenia that has yet to be reported until now. There have been 39 previously published reports of t...
