Tolerability of Vidaza (azacitidine) subcutaneous administration using a maximum volume of 3 ml per injection
The azacitidine (Vidaza®) product monograph indicates that doses greater than 4 ml should be divided equally into two syringes and injected into different sites. Although 2 ml is a more commonly used maximum volume for subcutaneous injections, there is a lack of evidence to support the use of any given maximum volume with azacitidine. Applying the status quo of 2 ml to azacitidine results in patients receiving 3–4 injections per visit. This prospective study evaluated the frequency and type of injection site reactions when the maximum subcutaneous injection volume was increased from 2 to 3 ml per injection site. ...

Is it equivalent? Evaluation of the clinical activity of single agent Lipodox(R) compared to single agent Doxil(R) in ovarian cancer treatment
Conclusion Lipodox® for treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer did not appear to have equivalent efficacy compared to Doxil®. A prospective clinical study is warranted before Lipodox® can be deemed equivalent substitution for Doxil®. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Loading, release and stability of epirubicin-loaded drug-eluting beads
Conclusions Epirubicin can be loaded into DC Bead™ of different sizes using the epirubicin powder formulation (25 mg/ml) or epirubicin injection concentrate (2 mg/ml). Physico-chemical stability is maintained over a period of at least 28 days when stored light protected at room temperature. Elution of epirubicin is dependent on the volume and cation exchange capacity of the elution medium. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Outcomes of hospitalized neutropenic oncology patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa bloodstream infections: focus on oral fluoroquinolone conversion
Conclusion Converting to oral fluoroquinolones after initial intravenous antibiotic therapy for Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia in clinically stable neutropenic oncology patients appears to achieve successful outcomes. However, prospective trials are needed to validate these results in neutropenic oncology patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia who are converted to oral fluoroquinolones. Evidence-based practice in times of drug shortage
Shortage of oncology drugs is a particularly complicated issue because there are usually limited therapeutic options. Moreover, oncology practice may employ medications for supportive indications which differ from their main usage. This means shortage of oncology drugs is not usually addressed by the major drug shortage guidelines. We have previously shown that, during a shortage crisis, it is possible to make a recommendation on the use of an expired drug supply based on a reasonable estimate of its safety and efficacy. Here, we would like to share further examples on how to deduce potential therapeutic alternatives based...

Bleomycin-induced flagellate erythema in a patient with Hodgkins lymphoma - A case report and review of literature
Bleomycin is a glycopeptide used as a chemotherapeutic agent for lymphomas, germ cell tumors, and pleurodesis of malignant pleural effusions. The pulmonary toxicity of bleomycin is well known while the cutaneous side effects are uncommon and varies from generalized hyperpigmentation, sclerodermoid changes, erythema multiformae, and gangrene to flagellate dermatosis. Here we report a characteristic but rare side effect of flagellate erythema, which developed secondary to bleomycin in a 27-year old woman with Hodgkin’s lymphoma after two cycles of treatment with adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine regimen. ...

Paradoxical effect of capecitabine in 5-fluorouracil-induced cardiotoxicity: A case vignette and literature review
5-fluorouracil is a chemotherapeutic agent that plays an important role in the treatment of various cancers including head and neck and gastrointestinal malignancies. Therapy with 5-fluorouracil is rarely associated with cardiotoxic effects including angina, heart failure, myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest, resulting in discontinuation at the expense of sub-optimal treatment of the targeted malignancy. In this article, we review the literature reported on 5-fluorouracil-associated cardiotoxicity and present a case of a patient who experienced chest pain on 5-fluorouracil. The cardiac symptoms subsided after initiati...

Synchronous gastric and ampullary adenocarcinomas in a hairy cell leukemia patient treated with pentostatin eight years prior
We report herein a case of synchronous high-grade gastric and ampullary adenocarcinomas in a patient with a history of hairy cell leukemia treated eight years prior with pentostatin. We include a review of immune alterations induced by both hairy cell leukemia and its therapies, and link them with the occurrence of second cancers in these patients.
