Denosumab in hypercalcemia of malignancy: A case series
Conclusions Denosumab helped decrease calcium in patients with hypercalcemia of malignancy. However, symptomatic hypocalcemia may result from denosumab in hypercalcemia of malignancy. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Ado-trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1): a novel antibody-drug conjugate for the treatment of HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer
Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer is an aggressive form of breast cancer associated with poorer prognosis and shortened survival. Primary and acquired resistance to existing HER2-targeted therapies presents a challenge for the management of patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer. Ado-trastuzumab emtansine, a drug-antibody conjugate, has shown promising results for patients failing prior treatment with trastuzumab. Ado-trastuzumab emtansine consists of the monoclonal antibody trastuzumab linked to a potent microtubule inhibitor (emtansine), allowing a targeted delivery of c...

Soy food frequency questionnaire does not correlate with baseline isoflavone levels in patients with bladder cancer
Conclusion The soy food frequency questionnaire did not correlate with plasma or urine concentrations of either isoflavone. Impact Alternative methods for controlling for soy consumption, including measuring plasma and urine concentrations, in isoflavone chemoprevention trials should be considered. Environmental contamination, product contamination and workers exposure using a robotic system for antineoplastic drug preparation
Environmental contamination, product contamination and technicians exposure were measured following preparation of iv bags with cyclophosphamide using the robotic system CytoCare. Wipe samples were taken inside CytoCare, in the clean room environment, from vials, and prepared iv bags including ports and analysed for contamination with cyclophosphamide. Contamination with cyclophosphamide was also measured in environmental air and on the technicians hands and gloves used for handling the drugs. Exposure of the technicians to cyclophosphamide was measured by analysis of cyclophosphamide in urine. Contamination with cyclophos...

Fixed, low-dose rasburicase for the treatment or prevention of hyperuricemia in adult oncology patients
Conclusion Fixed, low dose rasburicase produced a consistent lowering of uric acid levels and may be utilized in the management of hyperuricemia in TLS. Further study is necessary to determine if a larger fixed dose would be required in those patients with a higher baseline uric acid level. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Economic assessment of aseptic compounding rooms in hospital pharmacies in five European countries
Conclusions The different costs studied have revealed little significant difference between group B and I. The preparation cost in group B appears higher than in group I. This pilot study has resulted in the calculation of an estimated manufactured preparation cost but this work should be completed to help optimize resources and save money. Characterizing human herpes virus 6 following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
Conclusion This study suggests human herpes virus 6 reactivation occurs shortly after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (median of 25 days (interquartile range, 20–31.75) after hematopoietic stem cell transplant). Many potential risk factors are described in this report. Treatment of human herpes virus 6 predominately consisted of foscarnet with or without intravenous immunoglobulin; however, treatment of human herpes virus 6 was not always warranted. Furthermore, the effect of treatment on patient outcomes is uncertain. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Clinical efficacy of generic imatinib
Conclusion Overall, anecdotal concerns appear to be unfounded for generic imatinib approved in Canada and the EU. There is no evidence that these generic imatinib products are less effective than brand name imatinib. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Successful treatment of severe thrombocytopenia with the use of thrombopoeitin receptor agonist eltrombopag in a patient with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia
Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a clonal disorder of hematopoietic stem cells often occurring in elderly patients. The combination of CMML with autoimmune manifestations, including immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, has been described before in a number of case reports. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of the successful treatment of CMML-related thrombocytopenia with a thrombopoeitin receptor agonist, eltrombopag. Reversible slurred speech related to capecitabine and lapatinib combination in patients with breast cancer
Capecitabine plus lapatinib combination is an effective chemotherapy regimen in patients with advanced breast cancer. Neurological adverse effects secondary to this regimen were reported rarely in literature. A woman with breast cancer presented with complaints of slurred speech while using the capecitabine and lapatinib combination. Her major complaint was slurred speech. No other radiologic or laboratory disorders were detected in the patient. Slurred speech improved one week after the capecitabine and lapatinib combination was discontinued without any further intervention. (Source: Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice)

Transient liver function abnormality following treatment with rabbit antithymocyte globulin for nonmyeloablative hematopoetic stem cell transplant: Two case reports
We describe two cases of patients receiving a conditioning regimen for HSCT containing rATG who developed a transient, severe transaminase elevation. In the first case, a 66-year-old woman with a history of acute myeloid leukemia received the first dose of rATG and the patient’s transaminases were found to be extremely elevated within a few hours. The aspartate transaminase (AST) peaked at 1286 U/L and alanine transaminase (ALT) peaked at 991 U/L and both resolved within a week. In the second case, a 72-year-old woman with a history of non-Hodgkin lymphoma received the first dose of rATG and the AST and ALT were foun...

Drug interactions with sunitinib
Conclusion Current information on drug interactions between sunitinib and other drugs is scarce and most of the times it is difficult to apply to clinical practice. Even so, this difficulty in managing drug interactions should not be a reason to ignore them as they can help to explain intolerances and treatment failures.
