Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold technology, the rise and fall in clinical practice
Publication date: Available online 1 May 2018Source: Journal of Indian College of CardiologyAuthor(s): Wael Elabbassi, Hatala RobertAbstractIn 1977, interventional treatment of coronary artery disease was heralded by Andreas Gruntzig who started balloon angioplasty. Then in 1996 Schömig et al.3 introduced dual anti-platelet therapy instead of anticoagulant therapy. In 2001 Surrey et al.4 published first report on 45 patients who had negligible neo-intinal hyperplasia, one year after implanting Sirolimus eluting Bx VELOCITY stents. In 2006, Ormiston J et al. reported on the first in man implantation at mid LAD position.13 ...

Kounis syndrome manifesting as left main coronary aneurysm with late coronary stent thrombosis
Publication date: Available online 1 May 2018Source: Journal of Indian College of CardiologyAuthor(s): Vishwanath Hesarur, Sameer Ambar, Suresh Patted, Sanjay Porwal, Prasad M R, Anand Kumar MAbstractKounis syndrome (KS) is defined as the occurrence of an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) concomitantly with hypersensitivity reactions triggered by an allergenic event. Patients with Drug Eluting Stents (DES) implantation are prone to hypersensitivity reactions from five potential antigens namely metal stent, polymer coating, eluted drug and antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel). Coronary aneurysms are seen in 1.25–3.9% of patie...

Prevalence and short-term prognosis of heart failure: An in hospital prevalence study
ConclusionHeart failure occurs at a younger age in Indians compared to the western countries. The most common etiology is DCM followed by VHD. Since this is a retrospective analysis and has its own limitations, community based heart failure study taking a clue from the present study can be done to achieve invaluable data. Accuracy of the Canadian new risk score as in hospital prognostic score for the Egyptian patients with acute coronary syndrome
Conclusionthe Canadian-ACS is a valid accurate and simple prognostic risk score for short-term risk stratification in patients with ACS independent of hypertension, diabetes, smoking and troponin level. (Source: Journal of Indian College of Cardiology)

Balloon assisted retrieval of broken catheter in a 10-months old baby with patent ductus arteriosus: Case report
Publication date: June 2018Source: Journal of Indian College of Cardiology, Volume 8, Issue 2Author(s): Santosh Kumar Sinha, Mahmodula Razi, Puneet Aggarwal, Lokendra Rekwal, Anupam Singh, Nishant Kumar AbhishekhAbstractPercutaneous retrieval of intravascular foreign body can be done by snares, biopsy forceps, dormia basket or tip deflecting wires. Herein, we report percutaneous retrieval a fractured multipurpose diagnostic catheter by balloon assisted technique in a 10-months old baby while doing device closure of a patent ductus arteriosus. The catheter got fractured at the junction of shaft and the tip while manipulatio...

Percutaneous coronary rotational atherectomy: Does it make sense in 2018?
Publication date: June 2018Source: Journal of Indian College of Cardiology, Volume 8, Issue 2Author(s): Debabrata DashAbstractPercutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for obstructive coronary artery disease has traveled long journey since Andreas Gruentzig performed first PCI using a plain balloon catheter in Zurich in 1977. Heavily calcified coronary lesions(HCCL) constitute significant technical challenges for the interventionists and are associated with a high frequency of restenosis and target lesion revascularization. Sometimeseven with the smallest available low profile balloons fail to cross HCCL. They also may resi...

A rare case of congenital rubella syndrome
ConclusionWe present a case report of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS); though uncommon nowadays, it is still present in India. The main characteristics of our case report were congenital cataract, severe post ductal coarctation of aorta with patent ductus arteriosus and bilateral sensory neural hearing impairment. This case is reported to highlight the importance of vaccination by which rubella infection can be eradicated. (Source: Journal of Indian College of Cardiology)

Correlation of plasma 25-hydroxy-vitamin D level with angiographic severity in coronary artery disease
ConclusionsVitamin D deficiency is a relatively common disorder. Risk of cardiovascular disease in people with vitamin D deficiency is almost 1.7 times of those with normal levels of vitamin D. To confirm the casual relationship between vitamin D and cardiovascular disease, larger studies are suggested. (Source: Journal of Indian College of Cardiology)

Prevalence and clinical characteristics of patients with myocardial bridging in a population from North Kerala
ConclusionThe study showed a higher incidence of myocardial bridging then that of previous Indian studies. A significant proportion of patients presented with angina and acute coronary syndrome despite having no coronary artery disease. The incidence was higher in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy whereas it was similar to that of general population in patients with rheumatic heart disease.
