Daily Life Behaviors and Depression Risk Following Stroke: A Preliminary Study Using Ecological Momentary Assessment
Approximately one-third of stroke survivors have symptoms of depression. A better understanding of the early risk factors implicated in this form of comorbidity may contribute to the development of early prevention strategies and to improving outcomes for this population. The current study uses ecological momentary assessment techniques to identify behavioral risk factors for depression 3 months after stroke. Thirty-six participants completed ambulatory monitoring of daily life circumstances (location, social environment, and activity) 5 times per day during a 1-week period after hospital discharge. Clinician-administered ...

The Relationship Between Schizophrenia and Frontotemporal Dementia
Schizophrenia is a relatively common disorder diagnosed by the presentation of psychotic symptoms in the absence of identifiable neurologic or other organic cause. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a relatively rare progressive neurodegenerative disorder that can present with a multitude of cognitive and behavioral symptoms including psychosis. At times, this phenotypic overlap can mean that schizophrenia and FTD are 2 possibilities in the differential diagnosis of a psychotic presentation. In this article, we systematically review the literature on the relationship between schizophrenia and FTD including case reports that ...

Premorbid IQ Influence on Screening Tests' Scores in Healthy Patients and Patients With Cognitive Impairment
Cognitive screening tests are well-established tools for detecting cognitive impairment, but concerns regarding the influence of premorbid intelligence on patient’s performance and cognitive status classification remain. Risk of inaccurate assessment especially affects the elders with high or low premorbid intelligence (who are more likely to be misclassified). The present study examines the influence of premorbid intelligence assessed by the TeLPI (an irregular words reading test) on 2 cognitive screening tests, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), in healthy partici...

Barriers to Mental Health Care Utilization in Parkinson's Disease
Conclusions: People with PD may encounter a multitude of barriers that impede their pursuit of mental health care. Clinical implications are discussed and further research is needed to replicate and extend these findings. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Apathy in Patients With Parkinson Disease as a Function of Side of Onset
Conclusion: Clinically significant levels of apathy are much more likely to occur in patients with right-onset disease. These patients may be at greater risk of PD-related dementia. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Factors Associated With the Variability in Caregiver Assessments of the Capacities of Patients With Alzheimer Disease
Conclusions: Caregiver’s burden and depression were associated with more negative assessments of patients’ psychological and behavioral symptoms and quality of life. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Functional Limitations in Older Adults Who Have Cognitive Impairment Without Dementia
Conclusions: Many individuals with CIND have impairment in a range of complex and basic daily activities, largely due to physical health problems. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Structured Assessment of Mental Capacity to Make Financial Decisions in Chinese Older Persons With Mild Cognitive Impairment and Mild Alzheimer Disease
Previous studies suggested that patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia can have impaired and declining financial skills and abilities. The purpose of this study is to test a clinically applicable method, based on the contemporary legal standard, to examine directly the mental capacity to make financial decisions and its component decision-making abilities among patients with MCI and early dementia. A total of 90 patients with mild Alzheimer disease (AD), 92 participants with MCI, and 93 cognitively normal control participants were recruited for this study. Their mental capacity to make everyday financial...

The Effect of Poststroke Delirium on Short-Term Outcomes of Elderly Patients Undergoing Rehabilitation
Conclusions: In elderly patients undergoing poststroke rehabilitation, delirium is an independent predictor of institutionalization and inhospital death, but it does not affect functional recovery. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Neural Correlates of Activities of Daily Living in Frontotemporal Dementia
Conclusions: Differences in underlying neural correlates of ADL impairment have important clinical implications as these differences should be taken into account when interventions are planned. Dementia subtypes might require specifically tailored interventions for functional disability. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Screening for Anxiety Symptoms in Parkinson Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusions: Anxiety may be present as an isolated symptom, with specific demographic and clinical markers, and not only as a feature of depression in PD population. This highlighted the importance of identifying anxiety symptoms when treating patients with PD. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Medical Outcome of Patients With Dementia in a Free-Standing Psychiatric Hospital
Conclusions: Although nearly 50% of patients with dementia admitted for behavioral disturbance to a free-standing psychiatric institution required transfer to a general hospital, their rate of medical deteriorations was similar to age-matched nondementia control patients.
