Neuropsychological and Neuropsychiatric Prediction of Global Cognitive Status Among Older Spanish-Speaking Hispanics and English-Speaking Whites
Discussion: These results suggest that other measures should be considered to increase the predictive accuracy of neuropsychological tests when assessing cognitive status in Spanish-speaking Hispanics. Additional studies of specific ethnic/racial and sociodemographic subgroups are warranted. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Significance of Subjective Memory Complaints in the Clinical Setting
Conclusion: For patients with cognitive complaints observed in a memory clinic setting, the severity of subjective memory complaints is not useful to predict future conversion to dementia. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Functional Impairment in Mild Cognitive Impairment Evidenced Using Performance-Based Measurement
Older adults (OAs) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are traditionally thought to have preservation of activities of daily living (ADLs). However, recent evidence suggests OAs with MCI may have difficulty completing ADLs and specifically instrumental ADLs (IADLs). The ADLs are frequently evaluated through self- or collateral report questionnaires, while performance-based measures are infrequently utilized, despite the decreased bias and increased accuracy and sensitivity associated with these instruments. This investigation compared ADLs between community-dwelling OAs with (n = 20) and without MCI (n = 30) using a self-...

Validity and Reliability of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire Version in Patients With Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack Having Cognitive Impairment
This study examined the validity and reliability of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire version (NPI-Q), a proxy-reported format of the interview-based NPI, in assessing neuropsychiatric symptoms in 173 patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) having cognitive impairment. The NPI-Q was validated against the NPI as a gold standard. Informants took approximately 7 minutes to complete the NPI-Q. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a bias of 0.7 points, with 95% limits of agreement between –8.6 and 10.0 between the total symptom scores of the NPI and NPI-Q. The NPI-Q correlated significantly with the N...

Functional Disability in Alzheimer Disease: A Validation Study of the Turkish Version of the Disability Assessment for Dementia Scale
This study aimed to determine the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of Disability Assessment for Dementia (DAD) scale in the Turkish elderly population with Alzheimer disease (AD). The DAD scale was administered to the primary caregivers of 157 patients (age 77.7 ± 6.8 years) with AD. The Turkish version of the DAD scale showed high internal consistency (Cronbach α = .942), excellent test–retest, and interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.996 and ICC = 0.994, respectively). The DAD scale was significantly correlated with activities of daily living (ADL; Modifie...

Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety After the Disclosure of the Diagnosis of Alzheimer Disease
Conclusions: The disclosure of AD is safe in most cases and may improve anxiety. Symptoms of depression and anxiety worsen only in a minority of patients. The fear of depression or catastrophic reaction should not prevent clinicians to disclose the diagnosis of AD. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Abridged Scale for the Screening Anosognosia in Patients With Dementia
The objective of this cross-sectional study was to validate an abridged version of the Anosognosia Questionnaire—Dementia (AQ-D) for screening anosognosia in daily practice. The authors reduce the AQ-D from 30 items to 9, with a large sample (n = 352) of patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). The Cronbach α was .793 and an area under the receiver–operating characteristic curve was 0.946. The index between new abridged AQ-D (AAQ) and original AQ-D was .800. The AAQ presents good validity and reliability indicators and kept concordance with the original scale. It is quick and easy to administer and it can s...

Prevalence and Predictors of Poor Sleep Quality in Mild Cognitive Impairment
Conclusions: Sleep disturbance occurs in around two-thirds of patients with MCI. Interventions addressing depression, cognition, and substance and medication use may improve sleep quality in MCI. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Validity of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment as a Screen for Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia in African Americans
The validity of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) as a screen for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia was evaluated in African Americans attending an urban outpatient memory disorders clinic. Eighty one patients ≥50 years old were administered the MoCA and neuropsychological tests. Clinicians, blinded to the MoCA scores, reviewed the neuropsychological findings and reports of instrumental activities of daily living and they assigned a diagnosis of normal cognition (NC; N = 16), MCI (N = 38), or dementia (N = 27). The MoCA scores of the 3 groups were significantly different (NC > MCI > dementia). Us...

Structural and Functional Brain Changes in the Default Mode Network in Subtypes of Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment
Conclusions: Patients with MD-aMCI displayed more severe GM atrophy and ALFF changes than patients with SD-aMCI. The results suggested that aMCI is heterogeneous and that MD-aMCI may be a prodromal stage which is more close to AD. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Cognitive Complaints Correlate With Depression Rather Than Concurrent Objective Cognitive Impairment in the Successful Aging Evaluation Baseline Sample
Conclusions: Subjective cognitive complaints are more likely related to symptoms of depression rather than concurrent cognitive impairment in a large cross-section of community-dwelling adults without a formal diagnosis of dementia. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology)

Caregiver Burden: The Strongest Predictor of Self-Rated Health in Caregivers of Patients With Dementia
Conclusions: Caregiver burden was not only significantly associated with poor SRH after removing the effect of the other covariates but it was also recognized as the strongest predictor of caregivers’ SRH. Therefore, it seems that development of intervention programs, in order to reduce caregiver burden, can be considered as important step in promoting caregivers’ health level.
