Tuberculosis screening in patients with HIV: An audit against UK national guidelines to assess current practice and the effectiveness of an electronic tuberculosis-screening prompt
A retrospective clinical audit was performed to assess if the British HIV Association 2011 guidelines on routine screening for tuberculosis in HIV are being implemented in a large UK urban clinic, and if a tuberculosis-screening prompt on the electronic patient record for new attendees was effective. Of 4658 patients attending during the inclusion period, 385 were newly diagnosed first-time attendees and routine tuberculosis screening was recommended in 165. Of these, only 6.1% of patients had a completed tuberculosis screening prompt, and 12.1% underwent routine tuberculosis screening. This audit represents the first publ...

An audit of hepatitis B vaccination for men who have sex with men before and after sexual health service integration
Scottish Government guidelines identify hepatitis B vaccination as a key standard reflecting access to sexual health care for men who have sex with men (MSM). This audit was performed before and after service redesign to assess the impact of the integration of genitourinary medicine and sexual and reproductive health services on the provision of care to MSM. There was no significant difference between the proportion of males receiving at least one dose of vaccination (p = 0.64, 2 = 0.222), but a significant drop in the proportion of males receiving three doses of vaccination pre- and post-integration (p = 0.0157, 2 = 5.834...

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of hepatitis B virus in HIV-infected patients in Guangdong, China
This study investigated the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in HIV-infected adults at the time of antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation in Guangdong province, China. A total of 2793 HIV-infected adults were enrolled between January 2004 and September 2011. Demographic data and laboratory parameters were collected, HBV-DNA levels were measured, and HBV genotypes were identified before ART initiation. The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in HIV-infected patients was 13.2%. A total of 266 HIV/HBV co-infected patients and 1469 HIV mono-infected patients were recruited....

HIV risk and awareness and interest in pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis among sheltered women in Miami
Pre- and non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis for the prevention of HIV infection are recommended for adults at substantial risk of HIV. Women experiencing homelessness have increased risk of HIV infection compared with stably-housed women. We conducted a survey of 74 sheltered women at Lotus House Women's Shelter (Lotus House) in Miami to assess risk behaviour as well as knowledge and perception of pre- and non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis in this population. Of surveyed women, 58.1% engaged in vaginal and/or anal sex while sheltered, and of sexually-active women 55.4% reported inconsistent condom use. 83....

Notification following new positive HIV test results
Client notification of a new HIV diagnosis is critical for timely access to treatment and reduction in behaviours associated with HIV infection. It is also an important input in HIV transmission and disease progression models. We used national, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded HIV testing events data collected through the National HIV Prevention Program Monitoring and Evaluation system to update estimates of the proportion of newly identified HIV-positives notified of their status. We compared estimates from 2008 to 2010 across test technologies, settings, and HIV risk groups. In 2010, notification followi...

Large two-centre study into the prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium and Trichomonas vaginalis in the Netherlands
Mycoplasma genitalium and Trichomonas vaginalis are common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In the Netherlands, testing for M. genitalium and T. vaginalis is not recommended for first-line STI screening. Recent reports about the increasing antimicrobial resistance in M. genitalium raise concern about the adequacy of current empirical treatment regimens. It is necessary to have insight in the prevalence of M. genitalium and T. vaginalis in order to evaluate current first-line STI screening and treatment protocols. During a five-month period, samples sent to two large medical microbiology diagnostic centres in the Net...

Hepatitis B revaccination in HIV-infected vaccine non-responders: is double dosing always necessary?
Limited data exist on hepatitis B revaccination strategies for HIV-infected individuals who do not develop immunity after the first vaccination series. A retrospective cohort study was conducted to assess the immunogenicity of the second series of hepatitis B vaccine given in standard dosing (SD) and double dosing (DD) strategies among Thai HIV-infected adults during the period from January 2006 to December 2014. Of the 120 eligible patients, 68 (57%) were men, median age was 38 years old, 87 (73%) received SD and 33 (27%) received DD revaccination. The demographic and clinical characteristics of SD and DD groups were comp...

Differences in risk behaviours, HIV/STI testing and HIV/STI prevalence between men who have sex with men and men who have sex with both men and women in China
We examined differences in risk behaviours, HIV/STI testing, self-reported HIV/STI diagnoses, and linkage to HIV care between MSM and MSMW across China. Participants were recruited through three MSM-focused websites in China. An online survey containing items on socio-demographics, risk behaviours, testing history, self-reported HIV/STI diagnosis, and linkage to and retention in HIV care was completed from September to October 2014. Chi square tests and logistic regression analyses were conducted. MSMW were less likely to use a condom during last anal sex (p ≤ 0.01) and more likely to engage in group sex (p ≤ 0.01) a...

Intimate partner violence, consenting to HIV testing and HIV status among Zambian women
Sub-Saharan African countries are heavily burdened with HIV, which disproportionately affects women of reproductive age. Extant literature is inconsistent regarding the link between intimate partner violence and HIV. Data from the 2007 Zambian Demographic Health Survey of women aged 15–49 (n = 5014) were analysed. The influence of abuse by a current or former husband on consent to HIV testing and HIV positivity were evaluated. The unadjusted analysis showed a statistically significant association between intimate partner violence and consent to testing for HIV. Stratified analysis showed that there was a statisticall...

Partner notification in cooperation with community-based organizations among HIV-positive men who have sex with men in two Chinese cities
The epidemic of HIV/AIDS among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) is rapidly escalating. We implemented partner notification among HIV-infected MSM, cooperating with MSM-serving community-based organizations (CBOs) in two Chinese cities from June 2014 to May 2015. CBOs participated in identifying new HIV-positive MSM utilizing rapid HIV tests and partner notification among index cases. 253 index cases were recruited and 275 sexual partners were notified and tested with 10.5% screened positive. Compared with previously identified index cases, the proportion of contactable sexual partners of newly identified index cases...

Administration of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate-based antiretroviral therapy in an HIV-infected patient following unilateral nephrectomy
We report the use of efavirenz 600 mg/emtricitabine 200 mg/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg, once daily in a 47-year-old black man with a solitary kidney and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In 1990, he underwent radiation, chemotherapy, and ultimately, a unilateral nephrectomy for Wilms' tumor. Because of previous reports of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate-induced nephrotoxicity, our objective was to evaluate and monitor our patient's renal function over the course of 19 months based on serum creatinine, estimated creatinine clearance using the Cockroft-Gault equation, estimated glomerular filtration rate using the m...
