Routine HIV testing in the Emergency Department: feasible and acceptable?
The objective was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of HIV testing in an Emergency Department (ED) at a busy London teaching hospital. We conducted an observational cross sectional study between March–May 2012 where patients aged between 18–65 years attending St George's ED having serological tests were offered HIV testing by ED clinical staff. Patients were given an information leaflet on HIV, including how to obtain results. Data detailing whether the test was offered (feasibility) and whether the patient consented to the test (acceptability) were documented. Information regarding reasons for not...

Modelling and estimation of HIV prevalence and number of people living with HIV in India, 2010-2011
This paper provides HIV estimation methodology used in India and key HIV estimates for 2010–2011. We used a modified version of the Spectrum tool that included an Estimation and Projection Package as part of its AIDS Impact Module. Inputs related to population size, age-specific pattern of fertility, gender-ratio at birth, age and gender-specific pattern of mortality, and volume and age–gender distribution of net migration were derived from census records, the Sample Registration System and large-scale demographic health surveys. Epidemiological and programmatic data were derived from HIV sentinel surveillance,...

Usual vulval intraepithelial neoplasia in HIV-positive women - a case series
The objective of this study was to describe the clinical features and treatment responses of HIV-positive women diagnosed with VIN in a specialist vulval dermatology clinic. HIV-positive women diagnosed with VIN from 2007 to 2013 were retrospectively identified. Data were collected on demographics, clinical features, treatments and outcomes. Seven cases were retrospectively identified. The median CD4 cell count at presentation was 500 cells/mm3 (range 59–761). Five had multifocal VIN. Five were treated with imiquimod alone, one had surgical excision and one patient was treated with imiquimod and surgery. Five of the ...

Reactive arthritis following a Microsporidia infection
Reactive arthritis may be caused by both sexually transmissible and enteric organisms, though Microsporidia is not currently recognised as a causative agent. This case report describes the development of reactive arthritis following Microsporidia infection in an immunocompetent man. (Source: International Journal of STD and AIDS)

Shigellosis in men who have sex with men: an overlooked opportunity to counsel with pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV
In the absence of other epidemiological exposures, shigellosis in men who have sex with men (MSM) suggests engagement in high-risk sexual encounters. Infection and diagnosis of shigellosis in MSM presents a potentially overlooked opportunity to discuss the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis medications to prevent incident HIV infections. Cryptococcemia in primary HIV infection
We report a case of cryptococcemia in primary HIV infection. To our knowledge there has not been such a case reported. Our case highlights the need for clinicians to be wary of other opportunistic infections, including cryptococcosis, in primary HIV infection. (Source: International Journal of STD and AIDS)

The potential risks of probiotics among HIV-infected persons: Bacteraemia due to Lactobacillus acidophilus and review of the literature
We report a case of Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteraemia in a patient with AIDS temporally related to excessive consumption of probiotic-enriched yogurt, and provide a comprehensive review of the literature of Lactobacillus sp. infections among HIV-infected persons. Mycobacterium avium complex-associated cholecystitis in AIDS patient: a case description and review of literature
We describe a case of acute cholecystitis secondary to MAC in a patient with likely AIDS cholangiopathy. The patient, a 37-year-old Hispanic woman with CD4+ cell count of 10 cells/mm3 who was previously diagnosed with disseminated MAC, presented with a eight days of diffuse abdominal pain and anorexia. Radiologic imaging suggested acute cholecystitis, so the patient underwent open cholecystectomy. Pathology staining of the gall bladder wall revealed acid-fast bacilli consistent with MAC. The patient had been receiving appropriate therapy as an outpatient for MAC with presumed reliable adherence, but we suggest her burden o...

Serological follow-up of infants born to mothers with positive syphilis serology - real-world experiences
The 2008 UK syphilis guideline recommends infants born to women with any positive syphilis serology be followed up until both treponemal and nontreponemal tests are negative to exclude congenital syphilis, whereas Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines recommend using only nontreponemal tests. Historically, we had low infant follow-up rates with no coherent pathways. We initiated a change in multidisciplinary team practice of infant testing for syphilis in 2011 and evaluated the results before and after by retrospective review of testing of infants born to women with positive syphilis serology between 2005 a...

Prevalence and determinants of HIV in tuberculosis patients in Wuxi City, Jiangsu province, China: a cross-sectional study
At least one-third of the 34 million people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) worldwide are infected with latent tuberculosis (TB). The aim of this study was to determine the rate of HIV infection in TB patients and its determinants in Wuxi City, China. TB patients attending health institutions (12 selected sites) for TB diagnosis and treatment were enrolled in this study. TB diagnosis, treatment and HIV testing were done according to the national guidelines. Blood samples were collected for anonymous HIV testing. Among the TB patients, the HIV prevalence was 13.66% (1493/10,926). Multivariate analysis showed ...

Prevalence and correlates of intimate partner violence in HIV-positive women engaged in transactional sex in Mombasa, Kenya
We evaluated the prevalence and correlates of intimate partner violence (IPV) in the past year by a regular male partner in HIV-positive female sex workers (FSWs) in Mombasa, Kenya. This cross-sectional study included HIV-positive women ≥18 years old who reported engagement in transactional sex at the time of enrolment in the parent cohort. We asked 13 questions adapted from the World Health Organization survey on violence against women about physical, sexual, or emotional violence in the past year by the current or most recent emotional partner (index partner). We used standardised instruments to assess socio-demograph...

Trichomonas vaginalis infection in Nigerian pregnant women and risk factors associated with sexually transmitted infections
This study evaluated Trichomonas vaginalis and other common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) status in pregnant women, and risk factors associated with them. The study was cross-sectional and descriptive and a total of 198 pregnant women were recruited for T. vaginalis screening by microscopic examination. Questionnaires were also administered to 108 pregnant women to access information related to socio-demography and other factors associated with STI transmission. The overall prevalence of T. vaginalis was 18.7%. While prevalence of T. vaginalis was neither age nor parity dependent (p > 0.05), women in their firs...
