Assessing parental awareness and attitudes toward leaving children unattended inside locked cars and the risk of vehicular heat strokes
ConclusionConsidering the high temperatures in the Gulf region, the prevalence of vehicular heat stroke secondary to locking children inside vehicles is nontrivial. Awareness programs for parents and caregivers are strongly encouraged. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

PDA! Does it Matter?
Publication date: Available online 3 December 2019Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent MedicineAuthor(s): Jalal M. Abu-Shaweesh, Eyad AlmidaniAbstractManagement of persistent patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) continues to be a challenging issue. The attitude toward a PDA has shifted in the opposite direction during the last 20 years, from advocating an aggressive and early closure toward a call for watchful observation. While persistent PDA may cause challenges in the medical management of preterm neonates secondary to volume overload, pulmonary edema or hemorrhage, hypotension, and impaired tissue perfu...

Risk factors for intraventricular hemorrhage in premature infants in the Central Region of Saudi Arabia
ConclusionsFailure to receive antenatal dexamethasone, PDA, hydrocortisone administration for neonatal hypotension, and low hematocrit in the first 3 days of life was associated with severe IVH in VLBW neonates. Clinicians and healthcare policy makers should consider these factors during decision-making. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

Kangaroo Mother Care Practice, knowledge, and perception Among NICU Nurses in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
ConclusionThere is reasonable knowledge among NICU nurses, and most of them are actively engaged in practice. There is an urgent need to address the reported barriers through the implementation of clear practice guidelines, provision of suitable educational programs, optimization of staff numbers, and financial support for the development of areas conducive to KMC. A rare cause of neonatal intussusception. Considering it might reduce the mortality. A case report and a review of the literature.
We report a case of full-term neonate with ileo-cecal intussusception due to cecal duplication. Although cecal duplication represents rarely a surgical emergency, intussusception always needs immediate attention. The awareness of this entity is essential for diagnosis and hence management. Prevalence of anemia and iron profile among children and adolescent with low socio-economic status
ConclusionThe overall prevalence of anemia in children and adolescents is lower than the national data. Special consideration needs to be taken for female population, who are more at risk of developing ID and IDA. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

Facilitators and barriers to the training and maintenance of young persons’ advisory groups (YPAGs)
ConclusionBringing children and youth to the forefront of paediatric trials and clinical research facilitates appropriate patient representation in subsequent research decision-making. There is an urgency to create and implement standardized protocols for the training of children and youth, especially in preparation for national and international research consultations. This low barrier framework may be of special interest to lower-middle-income countries who wish to encourage community participation in healthcare. The First report of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients in Saudi Arabia
ConclusionMRSA infection in our population with CF is common. Therefore, an eradication protocol should be instituted at an early stage to prevent chronic colonization. Children with persistent MRSA colonization have high morbidity and mortality rate. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

Estimation of serum neopterin level as an early marker for detecting severe dengue infection
ConclusionIn this study, we found that the serum neopterin levels were significantly higher in the severe dengue category (mean: 58.75(±4.91) nmol/l) than in the nonsevere dengue category (mean: 48.11(±8.80) nmol/l). Further, a positive correlation was observed between neopterin concentration and duration of fever; hence, higher serum neopterin levels may indicate dengue severity. Hence, determination of serum neopterin concentration may be used for the early assessment of severe dengue. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

The prevalence of viral infections in children with cystic fibrosis in a tertiary care center in Saudi Arabia
ConclusionViral infections contributed to the increase in morbidity and mortality of CF patients in our population, and rhinovirus was the most common causative agent. Viral infections and viral recurrence increased the prevalence of bacterial infection of specific pathogens such as H. influenza and S. aureus. Physicians should be aware to prevent progressive lung damage in CF patients by treating the concomitant viral and bacterial infections. Viral infection may be associated with some common CFTR mutations. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

Correlation of 25-hydroxy vitamin D level with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in term healthy newborn: A prospective hospital-based observation study
ConclusionTerm healthy newborn having hyperbilirubinemia, with serum bilirubin levels out of the physiological range, have significantly low vitamin D levels and show a statistically negatively correlation with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (which is out of the physiological range). Thus, decreased vitamin D can be included in the list of risk factors for neonatal jaundice. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

Type 1 diabetes mellitus in Gabon: A study of epidemiological aspects
ConclusionT1D prevalence is constantly increasing worldwide, but at slower pace in Africa in comparison to developed countries. Difficulties to access to high standard care and population poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa, represents a major independent factor of poor therapeutic observance. Fetal Case of Diphtheria Reported to CDC Emergency Operations
Publication date: Available online 15 October 2019Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent MedicineAuthor(s): Saeed Altoom, Omar AlzomorAbstractUnreported cases of diphtheria are still present in developing countries. A 9-year-old incompletely vaccinated girl was admitted with pharyngotonsillitis caused by diphtheria. On day 9 of her illness, renal and cardiac failure occurred. Unfortunately, she died within hours of admission to intensive care with cardiogenic shock despite the vigorous supportive care delivered to her and the administration of antibiotics and diphtheria antitoxin. The suboptimal dose of...
