Community-acquired Urinary Tract Infections in Children: Resistance Patterns of Uropathogens in a Tertiary Care Centre in Saudi Arabia
ConclusionE. coli is the predominant uropathogen causing UTIs in children, yet there is a high rate of multidrug-resistant organisms. For children admitted for a community-acquired UTI, a third-generation cephalosporin remains an appropriate empiric antibiotic. Our study and the work of others emphasize the importance of choosing empiric antibiotics for paediatric UTIs based on local resistance patterns. Type 1 diabetes mellitus in Gabon. A study of epidemiological aspects
ConclusionT1D prevalence is constantly increasing worldwide, but at slower pace in Africa in comparison to developed countries. Difficulties to access to high standard care and population poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa, represents a major independent factor of poor therapeutic observance. Blood film says it all! Rare case of congenital TTP misdiagnosed as ITP
We report a case of a 16-year-old female who presented with bleeding diathesis. Peripheral blood film examination was consistent with microangiopathic hemolytic anemia with 7% fragmented red blood cells. The ADAMTS13 level was 40 ng/ml (reference range: 630–850 ng/ml). She responded to plasma exchange therapy and methylprednisolone and was discharged in a stable condition. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

Gut microbiome pattern in adolescents with functional gastrointestinal disease
ConclusionBecause of the wide range detected in the number of Bifidobacterium spp. and Enterobacteriaceae in FGID and healthy subjects, no statistically significant difference was observed. More studies in larger groups of selected patients may be needed. (Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine)

Menetrier's disease (protein-losing gastropathy) in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
We report a case of Menetrier's disease (Protein-losing gastropathy), which was diagnosed in a child with acute leukemia. Menetrier's disease should be considered in any patient with symptoms referable to the gastrointestinal tract and thickened stomach and bowel loops detected by radiologic imaging. Clinical profile and outcome of antibiotic lock therapy for bloodstream infections in pediatric hematology/oncology patients in a tertiary care hospital, Karachi
ConclusionIn our experience, in almost two thirds of the cases, the catheter was salvaged, but disappointingly, relapses were high when the infection was due to Staphylococcus spp. Although this is a small study, our results show that ALT can be a potential safe adjunctive strategy to treat catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI). However, we need larger prospective studies to test the safety and efficacy of ALT to develop specific ALT recommendations and guidelines particularly in children. Knowledge, attitudes, and practice of healthcare workers toward influenza vaccination at Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital (AJCH) – Dubai, UAE
ConclusionThe healthcare workers' knowledge of influenza disease does not reflect their knowledge, attitude, and practice toward influenza vaccination. These results highlight the important predictors that must be targeted to promote hospital awareness campaigns to improve their practice and attitude, which could result in increasing seasonal influenza vaccine uptake. Safety and Tolerability of Moxifloxacin for The Treatment of Disseminated BCGitis in Children
ConclusionOur study suggests that moxifloxacin is generally tolerated in children and might be considered in disseminated BCGitis cases. Additionally, paying attention to side effects such as liver toxicity is recommended, particularly with the use of other antimycobacterial antibiotics, which could also be hepatotoxic. A moxifloxacin-containing regimen for disseminated BCGitis showed clinical improvement in some patients in this study, although the majority presented the same clinical condition. Electrocardiographic disturbances in children with systemic lupus erythematosus
ConclusionChildren with SLE with anti-Ro/SSA antibodies are probably prone to heart conduction abnormalities. However, the heart rate and QT interval were affected by hydroxychloroquine.
