Vertically transmitted Chikunugunya, Zika and Dengue Virus infections. The pathogenesis from mother to fetus and the implications of co-infections and vaccine development
Publication date: Available online 29 May 2019Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent MedicineAuthor(s): Tracy Evans-GilbertAbstractChikungunya (CHIKV), Zika (ZIKV), and Dengue viruses (DENV) exhibit similar ecological, evolutionary, and epidemiological patterns but have different pathophysiological mechanisms of disease manifestations. Clinical presentations overlap and can be asymptomatic. Differences occur in the severity of clinical presentations with the highest mortality in the general population attributed to DENV and neurological morbidity due to ZIKV. ZIKV and DENV infections can cause fetal los...

Pediatric diabetes in Saudi Arabia: Challenges and potential solutions. A review article
Publication date: Available online 28 May 2019Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent MedicineAuthor(s): Aqeel A. AlaqeelAbstractDiabetes in children has increased globally, and the World Health Organization ranks Saudi Arabia 7th in prevalence and 5th in incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in children and adolescents has been identified in Saudi Arabia but its prevalence is still unknown. Despite advances in diabetes management including new insulins, insulin delivery systems, glucose monitoring and easy access to media for disease awareness, diabetes in children continues to be ch...

Incidence and outcome of group B streptococcal invasive disease in Omani infants
ConclusionOur GBS incidence is comparable to that of screened population internationally. At the time being, with the best available results, maternal screening might not seem cost effective in our current settings. A cost effective study is required before implemented a national screening programme in the Country. However, this research will definitely help in the process of any future plans of implantation of new guidelines, as it can be used as leading point for future prospective studies. School Bullying :an Increasingly Recognized Etiology for Psychogenic Non- Epileptic Seizures- Report of Two Cases
Publication date: Available online 28 May 2019Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent MedicineAuthor(s): Laila Alhafez, Amira MasriAbstractPsychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are seizure-like episodes that are not associated with changes on electroencephalogram. They are the result of a wide range of possible psychological stressors including being a victim of bullying. Currently, reports regarding PNES in bullied patients are lacking. In this case report, we describe two cases; the first is a 10 years old boy who presented to the emergency room once for visual loss and another for inability to wal...

Right middle cerebral artery infarct after minor head trauma in an infant: case report and literature review
Publication date: Available online 28 May 2019Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent MedicineAuthor(s): Md. Tauseef Khalid, Derrick Ws Chan, Enrica Ek Tan, Seow Wan Tew, NG Lee Ping, David Cy Low, Sharon Yy LowABSTRACTIshaemic stroke (IS) in the paediatric population is extremely rare. In this age group, the occurrence of IS often concurs with underlying congenital heart disease, haematological, metabolic or immunological conditions. In contrast, the association between IS and minor head injury in children has been sparse in current literature. The authors report a case of a healthy 9-month-old male who...

Kayemba-Kay’sAbstractA previously healthy 10-year-old boy was hospitalized for a left cervical abscess associated with massive tonsillar hypertrophy. He underwent abscess drainage and bilateral tonsillectomy. At H36 post-surgery, he presented with tonsillar hemorrhage requiring surgical revision. Hemorrhage relapsed 2 days later, with a total of 7 episodes, 5 of which required surgical revisions. Laboratory investigations wer...

Life threatening hyperkalemia treated with prolonged continuous insulin infusion
We report a case of 4-month old infant with Pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA) who had cardiac arrest secondary to severe hyperkalemia of 12.3mmol/l. It was refractory to anti hyperkalemic medications that necessitated the transfer of the patient to a tertiary hospital for dialysis. The potassium level has dropped gradually to a normal level with continuous insulin infusion and dextrose for almost 12 hours that waved the need of the dialysis. This case highlights the effectiveness of prolonged continuous insulin infusion in treating life-threatening hyperkalemia especially in hospitals where there are no dialysis services avail...

Current concepts in Pediatric inflammatory bowel disease; IL10/IL10R colitis as a model disease
Publication date: Available online 12 March 2019Source: International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent MedicineAuthor(s): Yousef Almana, Reem MohammedAbstractInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a heterogeneous group of disorders composed mainly of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) and undetermined IBD. The peak incidence of occurrence is mainly beyond the pediatric age group. Recent knowledge about genetic factors had been strongly linked to pediatric IBD (PIBD). Recent advances in genomic technologies have prompted the identification of genetic defects underlying rare, very early-onset IBD (VEO-IBD) as ...

Stressful life events, gender and obesity: A prospective, population-based study of adolescents in British Columbia
ConclusionsResults suggest that the frequency of major life events may be an important social stressor associated with obesity in adolescents, particularly for young men. However, findings should be replicated in larger samples using measured anthropometry to inform future obesity prevention strategies.
