Two cases of WWTR1-CAMTA-1 fusion-positive epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas with extremely different outcomes
We report two cases of WWTR1-CAMTA1 fusion-positive epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas (EHEs) with extremely different clinical behaviors. The first case was a 52-year-old Japanese woman with a complaint of an enlarging right axillary mass. Surgical specimen showed that the epithelioid tumors within the vein had the pathological feature of a cord-like pattern with myxoid or hyaline matrix and the intracytoplasmic lumen with erythrocytes and the immunophenotype of endothelial cells. The final pathological diagnosis was classic EHE. An RT-PCR analysis showed positivity of WWTR1-CAMTA1 fusion. The patient has now been free of ...

Intraepidermal malignancy in breast skin: A tale of two tumours
Publication date: November 2018Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports, Volume 14Author(s): Zitong Zhao, Timothy Kwang Yong Tay, Rashi Agrawal, Veronique Kiak Mien Tan, Yah Yuen Tan, Puay Hoon TanAbstractMammary Paget's disease most commonly affects the nipple areolar complex and is frequently associated with an underlying in-situ or invasive breast carcinoma. Pagetoid Bowen's disease of the breast is extremely rare and contains cells which morphologically resemble those of Paget's disease and may also express CK7 on immunohistochemistry. Here, we report two unusual cases of a 42-year-old Chinese woman with a recurrence of h...

Lack of MDM2 interpretation guidelines contribute to diagnostic difficulty in a case of undifferentiated sarcoma
We present a case of a 68 year old male with a thigh mass. Microscopic evaluation revealed a spindle and epithelioid cell neoplasm with pleomorphic nuclei arranged in vague, irregular fascicles and positive nuclear MDM2 staining. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis demonstrated 36.2 average MDM2 signals and 31.7 average centromere 12 signals per cell (1.1 ratio). Although a dedifferentiated liposarcoma is defined by MDM2 amplification, the lack of an adjacent well differentiated liposarcoma component and radiographic characteristics argued against a lipomatous tumor in this case, leading to a diagnosis of ...

BCR/ABL1-negative, triple-negative, myeloproliferative neoplasm with a hitherto undescribed, isolated, SH2B3 (LNK) gene mutation: A case report
Publication date: September 2018Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports, Volume 13Author(s): Emily Feldpausch, Shilpa Sambidi, Durga Cherukuri, Jagmohan SidhuAbstractThe myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are chronic myeloid cancers (clonal hematopoietic disorders) that are characterized by the overproduction of terminally differentiated (mature) blood cells, and that may evolve into acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The literature indicates that three known driver mutations currently exist in BCR/ABL1-negative MPNs: JAK2, MPL and CALR. A small percentage of BCR/ABL1-negative MPN cases lack mutations in all three of these genes...

Lymphohistiocytic nodules caused by luetic infection
Publication date: September 2018Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports, Volume 13Author(s): Pallavi Khattar, Wenbin XiaoAbstractThe histological diagnosis of luetic lymphadenitis remains challenging for the pathologists particularly when the pertinent clinical information is lacking. Here we report a case of a 23-year-old male, an immigrant from South America, who had a history of epithelioid hemangioma, presented with a painless enlarged left inguinal lymph node. In addition to the characteristic follicular hyperplasia and capsular thickening, lymphohistiocytic nodules are also seen. Recognition of such rare nodular prolif...
