Pulmonary microlithiasis: A case of forensic autopsy and a brief literature review
ConclusionsThis case provides insights into a pathology which is not frequent and can lead to death, besides illustrating the importance of histology in solving cases that come within a forensic setting. Therefore histology is fundamental to diagnose the cause of death, supplemented by knowledge of physiology and pathology in the cardiovascular and respiratory. (Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports)

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor within the spinal canal with apparent drop metastases
Publication date: November 2018Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports, Volume 14Author(s): Molly S. Peterson, Jason K. Waddell, Todd L. Ebbert, Arie Perry, Laurence C. BergAbstractMalignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare subtype of sarcoma that arises from cells associated with the peripheral nerve. It typically presents as an enlarging palpable mass, however, there are variable clinical presentations. MRI aids in detecting the tumor and/or potential metastases, and diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy. Surgical resection remains the mainstay of treatment, though adjuvant radiation therapy has become an integra...

Malignant glomus tumor of the gastric antrum with hepatic metastases: a case report and literature review
We report a case of an 80-year-old woman who presented with vague epigastric discomfort. On computed tomography (CT) imaging, a 7.1 cm solid enhancing mass was seen originating from the gastric antrum and was clinically suspected to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Needle core biopsies were obtained from the antral mass and demonstrated an epithelioid neoplasm with a brisk mitotic activity. The morphology and imunohistochemical profile (CKIT/DOG1 negative and strong immunoreactivity with smooth muscle actin), was consistent with a malignant glomus tumor, at least FNCLCC grade 2. At the time of the planned gast...

Gastric crystal-storing histiocytosis without any underlying disorders: Report of a case
We report a case of localized gastric CSH in a 72-year-old female who presented with diffuse granular mucosa in the gastric fundus and body endoscopically. Biopsy specimens from the stomach showed accumulation of crystal-storing histiocytes, and the crystalline material was immunohistochemically positive for kappa light chains and polyclonal heavy chains. There were no crystal-storing histiocytes in other organs. For the past 5 years, the gastric CSH lesion has remained without any change, and no neoplastic or lymphoproliferative disease has developed. Once the diagnosis of CSH is established, it is necessary to check fo...

Gastric mucinous carcinoma with micropapillary carcinoma component: Case report of tumor morphology not previously described in stomach
Publication date: November 2018Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports, Volume 14Author(s): Z.M. El-Zaatari, M.R. Schwartz, A.G. Ayala, J.Y. RoAbstractMicropapillary (MP) carcinoma is an uncommon tumor with a distinct histologic pattern. Although micropapillary carcinoma has been reported in the stomach, the concurrence of mucinous carcinoma and micropapillary carcinoma has not been reported to-date. A 69-year-old gentleman who presented with anemia was found at endoscopy to have a 1.7 cm gastric ulcer which was biopsied and subsequently underwent a partial gastrectomy. There was an ulcerated moderately differentiated aden...

Rare presentation of parotid duct rhinosporidiosis: A case report
Publication date: November 2018Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports, Volume 14Author(s): N. Puneeta, T. Santosh, Pravin GaikwadAbstractRhinosporidiosis is caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, a protist of class Mesomycetozoea, which comprises mostly uncultivable aquatic microbes at the animal-fungal boundary. It chiefly affects the mucous membranes of the nose, oropharynx and nasopharynx. It also involves many rare sites and may become disseminated to occur in a generalized form. Soil and water act as a reservoir for the organism. Rhinosporidiosis of the parotid duct is rare and there are very few reported cases in the India...

Oncocytoma of the nasal septum: A rare cause of persistent irritation
We present a 64 year old woman of Caribbean origin who presented with left sided nasal irritation only. Direct rhinoscopy confirmed a small nasal septum lesion. This was surgically excised and histologically identified as an oncocytoma. This case highlights the need for thorough initial assessment and careful histological analysis to detect rare nasal neoplasms. (Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports)

A unique case of epithelioid schwannoma; rare soft tissue tumor
Publication date: November 2018Source: Human Pathology: Case Reports, Volume 14Author(s): Haneen Al-Maghrabi, Njoud AldardeirAbstractEpithelioid schwannoma is a rare histological subtype of schwannoma that can cause diagnostic challenges. Most reported cases in the literature were located predominantly in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue of the extremities and trunk. Only few case reports document epithelioid schwannoma arising in deep soft tissue. Herein we report an interesting case of a benign epithelioid schwannoma found in one thigh of an otherwise healthy 30-year-old man. This tumor was benign, as is indicated by i...

The number of reported cases which have been diagnosed with BCC of the areola and nipple is gradually increasing. BCC of the areola and nipple has been considered more aggressive than BCC which has been detected in other sites ...

Multiple concurrent unusual neoplasms presenting in a patient with familial adenomatous polyposis: A case report and review of the literature
We report the case of a 57-year-old woman with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) who presented with bilateral ovarian microcystic stromal tumors (MCSTs) and a cribriform-morular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma, as well as concurrent noninvasive endometrial adenocarcinoma. The ovarian masses were confined to the ovaries. The tumor cells were positive for nuclear expression of β-catenin. The papillary thyroid carcinoma revealed the cribriform morular architecture associated with FAP, and immunohistochemistry also showed aberrant nuclear β-catenin. The endometrial adenocarcinoma, in contrast, showed an immunopheno...
