Prevalence of HIV infection among pregnant women presenting to two hospitals in Ogun state, Nigeria
Conclusions The overall HIV prevalence rate of 7.7% observed among pregnant women in this study was higher than the national average of 4.1%. Furthermore, HIV prevention campaigns need to be tailored towards older women as done for the younger ones in Nigeria, since prevalence was higher in the former than the latter. ABCC protein function and genetic variability in HIV infection
Publication date: 2014 Source:HIV & AIDS Review, Volume 13, Issue 3 Author(s): Katarzyna Maciejewska , Miłosz Parczewski ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABC) protein group is one of the most abundant protein family exhibiting diverse functions. Proteins of this group are present and expressed in virtually every tissue, with ABCC subfamily functional spectrum of ion transport, cell-surface signaling and toxin secretion. ABCC proteins are adenosine triphosphate (ATP) dependent with hydrolysis-derived energy used for the transport of substrates through the cellular membranes. Research data also confirm their ...

A sequential approach to identify the offending medication in HIV sero-positive patients having hypersensitivity to fixed dose combination of HAART
Conclusion In a resource-limited setting, where we have to use fixed-dose combination of anti-retroviral agents, management of a patient with drug hypersensitivity is a problem. Our protocol of systematic de-challenge and re-challenge, as exemplified in these cases, can be of help where expensive facilities are not available. (Source: HIV and AIDS Review)

Kaposi's sarcoma in a treated and well-controlled HIV infected patient: Discussion on the role of immunosenescence
We report a case of recurrent Kaposi's Sarcoma in a patient that had presented an undetectable HIV viral load for over 12 years and had a CD4+ T-Lymphocytes count above 1000/mm3. In this patient, the immunosenescent phenotype was not found overrepresented among CD8+ T cells. We performed a review of the literature in order to discuss this case. (Source: HIV and AIDS Review)

Adverse drug reactions and quality of life in HIV/AIDS patients: Advocacy on valuation and role of pharmacovigilance in developing countries
Discussion Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are widely accepted as one of the most significant factors affecting the treatment outcomes which often pose negative impact on patients’ quality of life. This becomes more evident in the treatment of chronic illnesses such as HIV & AIDS, where ADRs are often accountable for issues like non-adherence, which may not only affect the patients’ confidence on ARVs but can eventually affect the whole outcome of the treatment. There is no doubt about the effectiveness of interdisciplinary approach in managing chronic illnesses and a greater role of pharmacist is regarded as one...
