Major depression in HIV-infected patient. Significance of cooperation with psychologist in ART therapy team. Case report
Publication date: Available online 15 November 2014 Source:HIV & AIDS Review Author(s): Maria Jankowska , Agnieszka Jasińska , Małgorzata Lemańska , Marcin Dręczewski The prevalence of major depression in HIV-infected populations is reported to be up to 20–40% versus 7% in general population. Early screening, diagnosis and treatment of depression allow to tackle the symptoms associated with this psychiatric disorder before they fully develop. Specific stressors may include: stigma, decreased self-esteem, disruption in relationships with a partner and family, life-style disruptions and sexual dysfuncti...

A multi-dimensional assessment of quality of life among attendees of a West African HIV clinic and its use in tracking outcome
Conclusions The study observed varied degrees of impairment across specific domains of QOL. To ensure improved QOL, HIV care with relevant policies should target multidimensional aspects of health. Additionally, socio-economic problems like stigma with relationships issues and unemployment should be addressed by the government with institutions of human rights (such as right to equal opportunity, autonomy, privacy and health, safe working environment and information) for all PLWHA. Further research on QOL and tracking of HIV disease outcome with multi-dimensional approach are implied. (Source: HIV and AIDS Review)

Human immunodeficiency viral infection in the Republic of South Sudan: A paradigm beyond normality
Conclusion The rate of HIV infection is on the increase in the Republic of South Sudan. This has been attributed to dismal poverty, illiteracy, lack of awareness programs, having multiple sexual partners and widow inheritance. (Source: HIV and AIDS Review)

The differential diagnosis of HIV related anaemia should include pure red cell aplasia
Publication date: 2013 Source:HIV & AIDS Review, Volume 12, Issue 4 Author(s): P. Soma , S. Ellemdin , K.S. Mashoeshoe Hematologic abnormalities feature commonly in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This includes anaemia and it occurs in 70–80% of patients. The causes of HIV-related anaemia are multifactorial. The possible mechanisms causing the anaemia are those which are directly related to HIV and include infection, malignancy, drugs, anaemia of chronic disease, haemolysis, blood loss and hypersplenism, whilst there are multiple causes not related to HIV. Features found in HIV-...

Hepatitis C virus co-infection among people living with HIV/AIDS in a Nigerian Teaching Hospital
Conclusion The prevalence of 23.2% for HCV among PLWHA reported for this community is alarming. More focus should be directed on management of HCV component of coinfection than it is done now. Further studies are recommended employing molecular techniques to determine subtypes of HCV that may be predominant and why this figure of co-infection is so high in the study location. Genomics and transcriptomics in HIV and HIV/HCV coinfection—Review of basic concepts and genome-wide association studies
Publication date: 2013 Source:HIV & AIDS Review, Volume 12, Issue 4 Author(s): Miłosz Parczewski Genomics and transcriptomics in HIV and HIV/HCV coinfection provide basis for understanding of the host–virus interactions leading to the development of novel antiviral approaches and therapeutics. With progress of this branch of the basic science background for the personalized medicine is provided. In this review basic concepts related to the intracellular control of HIV infection are presented, key genome wide association studies related to HIV and HIV/HCV, as well as basic information on microRNAs involved i...

Subtype variability and phylogenetic analyses in HIV
Publication date: 2013 Source:HIV & AIDS Review, Volume 12, Issue 4 Author(s): Miłosz Parczewski Origin and spread of HIV infection has been modeled by an array of phylogenetic tools. The phylogenetic modeling has been used to calculate the time of transmission of HIV from primates to humans, trace the spread of HIV subtypes and calculate ancestries in the modern epidemics. These techniques are constantly used for the molecular surveillance of antiretroviral drug resistance especially from the perspective of transmitted mutations and spread of recombinant and mutated clades. Molecular clock based models allow...

Rilpivirine in the light of the genotypic drug resistance data
Publication date: 2013 Source:HIV & AIDS Review, Volume 12, Issue 4 Author(s): Miłosz Parczewski Rilpivirine, a second generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor has been recently approved for the treatment-naive HIV-1 infected subjects. One of the characteristic features of this agent is activity in the setting of the K103N mutation and higher genetic barrier to resistance in comparison to the first generation agents. Key rilpivirine associated mutations include K101E/P, E138A/G/K/Q/R, V179L, Y181C/I/V, H221Y, F227C, M230I/L and Y188L, while additional variants with possible influence on drug ...

Szybkie zahamowanie replikacji wirusa i uzyskanie VL HIV poniżej poziomu wykrywalności (< 50 kopii/ml) warunkuje skuteczność leczenia i zapobiega rozwojowi objawów zakażenia. W pierw...
