Practical use of airway pressure release ventilation for severe ARDS--a preliminary report in comparison with a conventional ventilatory support.
Authors: Liu L, Tanigawa K, Ota K, Tamura T, Yamaga S, Kida Y, Kondo T, Ishida M, Otani T, Sadamori T, Tsumura R, Takeda T, Iwasaki Y, Hirohashi N Abstract Airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) is a ventilatory mode that allows unsupported spontaneous breathing at any phase of the ventilatory cycle with high mean airway pressures. We hypothesized that use of APRV might produce potential beneficial effects on oxygenation, reducing mortality in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in comparison with synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) as a conventional mode ...

Cerebral angiography using gadolinium as an alternative contrast medium in a patient with severe allergy to iodinated contrast medium.
We report cerebral digital subtraction angiography (DSA) using Gadolinium in a patient allergic to iodinated contrast media. A 77-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for surgical resection of a brain tumor. Although a DSA was requested as a preoperative examination, the patient had a history of allergic reaction to non-ionic iodinated contrast medium. Therefore, DSA was performed using Gadolinium. The DSA showed no tumor stain and normal venous drainage. The patient underwent surgical resection of the tumor and was discharged with no new neurological deficit. DSA using Gadolinium was useful in a patient with an ana...

Hepatic angiomyolipoma: a case report.
Authors: Nakashima A, Murakami Y, Uemura K, Hayashidani Y, Sudo T, Hashimoto Y, Arihiro K, Sueda T Abstract We experienced a rare case of hepatic angiomyolipoma (AML). A 66-year old Japanese female presented inhomogeneous echogenic lesion in the lateral segment of the liver on ultrasonography. Contrast computed tomography (CT) revealed early arterial enhancement within the lesion that stayed hyperdense in the equilibrium phase. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a non-homogeneous and partially high intensity mass on both T1- and T2-weighted images. Selective hepatic digital subtraction angiograp...

Evaluation of apoptosis and immunohistochemical expression of the apoptosis-related proteins in mesothelioma.
In conclusion, apoptosis is an uncommon event in mesothelioma and low mean cleaved caspase-3 index, suggesting the role of low activation of caspase-3 for inhibition of apoptosis. High expression of survivin in mesothelioma may play a role in inhibition of apoptosis. PMID: 20632685 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Hiroshima Journal of Medical Sciences)

A case of endometriosis of the appendix.
We report a case of endometriosis of the appendix in a 29-year-old woman who presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain. Rebound tenderness was localized to McBurney's point. Her WBC count was 12,300/mm3 and her CRP was 6.497 mg/dl. Ultrasound and computed tomography detected a calcified region inside the cecum and slight thickening of the wall of the appendix. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and underwent an appendectomy. The appendix appeared mildly congested, but the mucosa of the appendix was nearly normal and without macroscopic inflammation. Histopathological examina...

Generation and evaluation of an anti-REV1 monoclonal antibody.
Authors: Tachibana N, Iwamoto T, Kawamura T, Masuda Y, Mori T, Kamiya K Abstract Continuous exposure of cells to exogenous and endogenous agents produces many types of DNA damage during normal cell cycles. Post-replication repair, consisting of error-free and error-prone sub-pathways, is required for tolerance of such DNA damage. REV1 plays a crucial role in regulation of the error-prone pathway. To facilitate analysis of its cellular functions, we here generated a mouse Rev1 monoclonal antibody, called D6, which also recognizes human REV1. The epitope for the antibody could be mapped between 860-877 amino...
