Surgical Resection of Thoracic Esophageal Cancer with Interstitial Lung Disease: A Case Report.
We describe a patient with stage IA esophageal cancer accompanied by interstitial lung disease (ILD). Endoscopic resection and radiotherapy were not appropriate because of clinically diagnosed submucosal invasion and the patient was at high risk of ILD exacerbation. We therefore selected transhiatal esophagectomy without a thoracotomy considering the risk of postoperative respiratory complications, and administered methylprednisolone and sivelestat in the perioperative period for the reduction of surgical stress. To our knowledge, this is the first report of surgical treatment for esophageal cancer with ILD. The patient wa...

Solitary Cranial Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: Two case reports.
We describe the clinical and histologic spectrum of LCH of the orbit and skull in our two cases. Both cases had unifocal erosive skull lesions with a history of trauma. Typical histologic features included numerous histiocytes with varying degrees of giant cell formation and scattered eosinophilic granulocytes. The presence of Langerhans cells was confirmed by CD1a and S100 immunohistochemistry. LCH has an excellent prognosis when treated with surgical resection, steroids and radiotherapy or chemotherapy. One of our patients is disease free at 7 year follow-up and one patient had regression of lesion on follow-up. ...

Effect of Revascularization on Headache Associated with Moyamoya Disease in Pediatric Patients.
Authors: Bohara M, Sugata S, Nishimuta Y, Karki P, Nagayama T, Sakamoto S, Tokimura H, Arita K Abstract Episodic headache is common in childhood moyamoya disease (MMD). The onset, mechanism, cause of headache and the effect of revascularization surgery on headache are not yet clear. We studied 10 cases of children (7 boys and 3 girls) younger than 18 years who underwent revascularization for MMD between 2009 and 2013. We evaluated frequency of headache and cerebral blood flow changes by single photon emission computed tomography brain imaging with [I123]-labeled iofetamine (IMP-SPECT) before and after surg...

Mirizzi Syndrome with a Biliobiliary Fistula: a case report.
Authors: Sakoda T, Murakami Y, Kondo N, Uemura K, Hashimoto Y, Nakagawa N, Sueda T Abstract Mirizzi syndrome is a rare complication of cholelithiasis, which is defined as a common bile duct obstruction due to stones impacted in Hartman's pouch or the cystic duct of the gallbladder. The impacted stones and surrounding inflammation can lead to a biliobiliary fistula. We herein present the case of a 73-year-old Japanese man with a biliobiliary fistula that was diagnosed by peroral cholangiography (POCS). We performed partial cholecystectomy and choledochoplasty as the stone had eroded almost the entire circum...

Inference on biological mechanisms using an integrated phenotype prediction model.
Authors: Enomoto Y, Ushijima M, Miyata S, Matsuura M, Ohtaki M Abstract We propose a methodology for constructing an integrated phenotype prediction model that accounts for multiple pathways regulating a targeted phenotype. The method uses multiple prediction models, each expressing a particular pattern of gene-to-gene interrelationship, such as epistasis. We also propose a methodology using Gene Ontology annotations to infer a biological mechanism from the integrated phenotype prediction model. To construct the integrated models, we employed multiple logistic regression models using a two-step learning ap...

Regression analysis of maternal smoking effect on birth weight.
Authors: Nijiati K, Satoh K, Otani K, Kimata Y, Ohtaki M Abstract Risk factors for low birth weight (LBW) have been indicated in many studies, but in Japan few studies have examined the amount of reduction in birth weight (BW). The goal of this study was to examine the association between maternal smoking among pregnant women and subsequent reduction in BW, corrected by the effect of potential confounders. To assess the effect of background factors other than maternal smoking, we established a model to estimate the contribution of each explanatory variable using logarithmic multiple regression. We then use...
