Relationships among blood leptin and adiponectin levels, fat mass, and bone mineral density in Japanese pre- and postmenopausal women.
We examined the associations between the blood levels of these adipocytokines and the lumbar spine (L2-L4), left femoral, and distal forearm BMD after adjustment for the age and body fat percentage. No correlation was observed between leptin and the BMD. This is presumably due to the fact that the influence of menopause, age, duration of postmenopausal period, and body fat percentage on the BMD is greater than that of leptin levels in healthy women. The adiponectin levels were significantly correlated negatively with the lumbar spine and femoral BMD in premenopausal women, and with forearm BMD in postmenopausal women, rega...

Treatment of iliac artery rupture during percutaneous transluminal angioplasty: a report of three cases.
We report three cases of iliac artery rupture during percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). In all three cases, bleeding was temporarily controlled by inflating an angioplasty balloon at the site of bleeding. Two patients underwent subsequent surgical revascularization, and one underwent endovascular stent grafting but ultimately required a surgical bypass. Arterial rupture is a rare but potentially fatal complication of PTA. Although stent grafts for peripheral arteries are not yet covered by Japanese medical insurance, it is a useful treatment for arterial injury during PTA. PMID: 22389952 [PubMed - indexed...

Recanalization after successful occlusion by transcatheter arterial embolization with N-butyl cyanoacrylate for traumatic splenic artery injury.
Authors: Ishikawa M, Kakizawa H, Yamasaki W, Date S, Hieda M, Kajiwara K, Awai K Abstract A 70-year-old male with advanced pancreatic cancer went into shock after sustaining a traumatic abdominal injury. Computed tomography (CT) showed a hematoma with extravasation around the pancreas and hemorrhagic ascites. After direct catheterization failed due to angiospasm, the ruptured splenic artery was successfully occluded by transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) using an N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA)-lipiodol mixture and the patient recovered from shock without complications. A follow-up CT obtained 20 days l...

Growth hormone receptor expression in brain tumors.
Authors: Sakoguchi T, Hama S, Tominaga A, Kinoshita Y, Sugiyama K, Arita K, Kurisu K Abstract Growth hormone (GH) is essential for quality of life in both children and adults, but it is also believed to enhance the growth of various neoplasms. However, the role of GH in the brain, particularly in brain tumors, has yet to be established. To clarify these problems from the perspective of receptor expression, we examined GH receptor (GHR) expression in brain tumors using immunohistochemistry and the correlation between GHR expression and clinical features. Surgical specimens obtained from patients with brain ...

Influences of pyrexia and age on theophylline clearance in young children with asthma.
This study showed that the presence of pyrexia decreases theophylline clearance, and that it affects theophylline clearance in an age-dependent manner. Based on the results of this study, dosages should be designed based on the clearance at the time of pyrexia. A rare diagnostic challenge in acute appendicitis: a case report.
We report a case of a 78-year-old woman presenting with an extensive gas-forming abscess in the right gluteal region secondary to perforated appendicitis without significant gastrointestinal symptoms. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a retroperitoneal abscess extending along the sacropelvic surface of the ilium to the subcutaneous tissue. Subsequently, laparotomy revealed retrocecal appendicitis perforated at the base of the cecum, and contained in the retroperitoneum without any signs of peritonitis. This case not only represents an unusual manifestation of acute appendicitis, but also alerts us to the importance of ...

Modelling seasonal variations in presentations at a paediatric emergency department.
Authors: Takase M, Carlin J Abstract Overcrowding is a phenomenon commonly observed at emergency departments (EDs) in many hospitals, and negatively impacts patients, healthcare professionals and organisations. Health care organisations are expected to act proactively to cope with a high patient volume by understanding and predicting the patterns of ED presentations. The aim of this study was, therefore, to identify the patterns of patient flow at a paediatric ED in order to assist the management of EDs. Data for ED presentations were collected from the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, wi...
