Role of vascular endothelial growth factor-C and -D mRNA in breast cancer.
Authors: Teramoto S, Arihiro K, Koseki M, Kataoka T, Asahara T, Ohdan H Abstract Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C and VEGF-D belong to the VEGF family, and are thought to be involved in lymphangiogenesis and angiogenesis. At present, this is the only known system that can induce lymphatic vessel growth in the body. However, the roles of VEGF-C and VEGF-D in breast cancer tissue have not been clarified. In the present study, we measured the mRNA expression of VEGF-C and VEGF-D in the breast cancer tissue of 109 patients by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Between non-infiltrating bre...

Early induction of PMX-DHP improves oxygenation in severe sepsis patients with acute lung injury.
Authors: Suyama H, Kawasaki Y, Morikawa S, Kaneko K, Yamanoue T Abstract Direct hemoperfusion with polymyxin B-immobilized fibers (PMX-DHP) has been widely regarded as a treatment modality for septic shock in Japan. Recently, it was reported that PMX significantly improved the P/F (PaO2/FiO2) ratio in patients with acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The aim of this study was to examine whether the phase of sepsis is related to the effects of PMX-DHP treatment on oxygenation in patients with ALI and ARDS. Thirty-four patients who had ALI or ARDS with severe sepsis were in...

How valid is the self-administered visual analogue scale for assessing the health status of elderly people?
This study was conducted to verify the validity of the self-administered visual analogue scale (VAS) for assessing the health status of elderly people. A survey was conducted in two villages in western Japan in 2003. A total of 2040 participants, aged between 60 and 75 years, completed questionnaires comprising the VAS and six Likert-type items for health status, physical strength, life enjoyment, appetite, sleep, and life satisfaction. Data of the valid participants who properly completed both the VAS and the Likert-type item on health status were analyzed (n=1579, 77.4%). Among the Likert-type items, the VAS score was th...

Neural correlates of alexithymia in response to emotional stimuli: a study of anorexia nervosa patients.
Authors: Miyake Y, Okamoto Y, Onoda K, Shirao N, Mantani T, Yamawaki S Abstract Individuals with alexithymia are typically unable to identify, understand, or describe their own emotions. Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) have been shown to have high levels of alexithymia, and the latter trait may play an important role over the course of AN. However, relatively little is known about the underlying neurobiological relationships between alexithymia and AN. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between alexithymia level and brain activation in patients with AN. Thirty female patients par...

Thiamylal and thiopental attenuate beta-adrenergic signaling pathway by suppressing adenylyl cyclase in rat ventricular myocytes.
Authors: Hidaka I, Kurokawa H, Yasuda T, Hamada H, Kawamoto M, Yuge O Abstract The effects of intravenous anesthetics on myocytes have not been fully elucidated. To investigate the effects of various intravenous anesthetics such as fentanyl, morphine, ketamine, diazepam, midazolam, thiamylal, and thiopental on the beta-adrenergic signaling pathway, we measured isoproterenol-stimulated cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) production in freshly isolated rat ventricular myocytes. Fentanyl, morphine, ketamine, diazepam, and midazolam did not significantly affect isoproterenol-stimulated cAMP production. Howev...

Differential diagnosis of hepatic tumor-like lesions in dog by using dynamic CT scanning.
In this study in dogs, we compared the hemodynamic patterns of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the malignant tumors, and nodular hyperplasia (NH), a benign tumor that is more common in older dogs. Thirty-six dogs with HCC and 40 dogs with NH, which were histopathologically diagnosed at Taniura Animal Hospital, were used as subjects. Dynamic CT scanning was performed and the data of each scanning phase were collected. Dilated blood vessels, septum formation, and capsule formation were noted in the tumors from 25, 17, and 25 animals with HCC, respectively. In the arterial phase, high density and low contrast were note...

A cure Weibull gamma-frailty survival model and its application to exploring the prognosis factors of neuroblastoma.
Authors: Dokhi M, Ohtaki M, Hiyama E Abstract The log rank test and the Cox regression, or modifications thereof, emphasize the effect of covariates on survival rate parameter. In some cases, cured individuals, i.e., individuals who may not experience the event of interest may exist in the population of interest. In this situation, we may wish to examine the effect of covariates on both survival rate and cured fraction parameters. Motivated by the Japanese neuroblastoma dataset, we consider a cure model that accounted for the effect of covariates on both of the abovementioned parameters. To deal with heter...
