A case report of sliding inguinal hernia containing ascending colon, caecum and whole of ileum with its mesentery as its content
ConclusionSliding hernia is a rare entity and those containing transverse colon, ascending colon, caecum and appendix are even rarer. Care must be taken to identify the contents of the hernia to avoid inadvertent injury to the structures. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Laparoscopic right adrenalectomy for spontaneous hemorrhage in an adrenal incidentaloma, presenting as a case of acute surgical abdomen
AbstractSpontaneous adrenal hemorrhage is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain. Systemic disorders that deregulate normal hemostasis and the use of anticoagulants are both considered predisposing factors for this unusual condition. Questions still remain in the case of hemorrhage in previously diagnosed incidentalomas. Spontaneous hemorrhage in this setting increases the suspicion of occult malignancy or pheochromocytoma. On the other hand, the presence of a retroperitoneal hematoma can make laparoscopic excision of such lesions technically challenging in the acute setting. In the present study we report the case of sponta...

Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair
ConclusionLaparoscopic repair surpasses the traditional open repair in all terms and should be the choice of surgery in primary ventral hernia repair.ConclusionsPre-treatment serum IL-6 levels can be considered a good biomarker to predict response to chemotherapy. Role of laparoscopic fundoplication in the management of gastro-esophageal reflux disease: An evidence-based appraisal
AbstractGastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a very common medical disease. There is no consensus for optimal management of GERD. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are the most effective drug treatment for GERD. The number of antireflux procedures is on the rise, partly due to increased patient ’s expectations, and partly due to the advancements in minimal access surgery. There are few controversies surrounding role of laparoscopic fundoplication in the management of GERD, like whether surgery is superior to PPI; which modality is better, laparoscopic or open; whether complete wrap is be tter than partial, and whether d...

Age greater than 60 years in patients undergoing liver resection for colorectal liver metastases is an independent prognostic factor of an increased postoperative non-surgical complication rate and of overall survival
ConclusionAn age greater than 60 years is an independent prognostic factor of an increased postoperative nonsurgical complication rate and of decreased overall survival in patients undergoing partial hepatectomy for colorectal liver metastases. In this age group of patients significant post-operative complications relate not to the technical complexities or scale of procedure, but to the baseline physiological performance characteristics of the patient. An interesting case of inflammatory pseudotumour appendix presenting as appendicular perforation with peritonitis
ConclusionIMT or pseudotumour is a rare neoplastic lesion found in pulmonary and extrapulmonary sites, mostly among children and young adults. The immunohistochemistry pattern plays a crucial role in diagnosing IMT. Complete surgical excision should be considered. An appendectomy is adequate in cases restricted to the appendix.KeywordsAppendix, inflammatory pseudotumour, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT), anaplastic large cell lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene. A rare case of coexistent carcinoma of the colon with tuberculosis
AbstractThis is a case report of a 35-year-old female who presented with acute intestinal obstruction initially diagnosed as ileocaecal tuberculosis. She was submitted to exploratory laparotomy with a right hemicolectomy for a non-passable ileocaecal mass. Histopathology showed colon cancer with tuberculosis both in the colon as well as the mesenteric lymph node. In addition to its pathological rarity, this case is of particular interest, because it highlights the diagnostic dilemma and therapeutic challenge associated with such a condition. Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome; A rare cause of duodenal obstruction: Report of two cases
ConclusionThis rare diagnosis of Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) is based mostly on clinical symptoms and radiologic evidence of duodenal obstruction by Barium studies and abdominal CT scan. Along with compression of third part of duodenum, altered relationship of superior mesenteric vein and artery with high up cecum and sub-hepatic location of appendix and mesenteric vascular abnormality sometimes do coexist, as we encountered in our cases. Presently, surgical treatment (either laparoscopic or open) is the only accepted way of managing SMAS. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Difficult cases of inguinal hernia repair: 12 cases aged 65 years and over
AbstractTwo hundred and forty-nine cases of inguinal hernia operated on at Medeniyet University Goztepe Training and Research Hospital from 2010 to 2012 were reviewed retrospectively. Malignancy was present as a comorbid disease in twelve patients, ten of whom were male and two female. Eleven cases were operated on electively and one case was operated on in an emergency setting. The average duration of hospital stay was 2.7 days. No mortality was recorded. Nowadays, notwithstanding the increased risk due to comorbid diseases, consensus advocates routine surgery for inguinal hernia repair in patients aged 65 years and over....

Role of ileostomy in ileal perforation and its complications
ConclusionNonspecific enteric perforation (48%) was the commonest cause of enteric perforation. Ileostomy as a treatment modality carried a mortality rate of 2.66%. Chest X-Ray is a useful diagnostic tool. Ileostomy closure carried an overall complication rate of 68%. Small bowel obstruction, wound infection and ECF were commonly seen complications. Small bowel obstruction occurred in 12% of cases and was managed conservatively. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Laparoscopic resection of giant myelolipoma on the right adrenal gland
ConclusionAdrenal myelolipoma is a rare condition, usually diagnosed as incidentaloma and followed with CT and MRI. Surgery is recommended only for those patients who are symptomatic and present with a large tumour. The laparoscopic approach in these patients is technically feasible, safe and comparable with the open approach. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Subacute intestinal obstruction caused by true enterolith
AbstractEnterolith in the abdominal X-Ray of a patient is a rare finding. Enteroliths are seen in presence of diverticula, tuberculosis and they also sometimes resemble gall stone ileus. Stone formation in absence of these entities is a rare phenomenon, which makes this case a rare phenomenon too. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)
