Gastrointestinal stromal tumour of the jejunum in an elderly female patient with atypical symptomatology
AbstractGastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) neoplasms are rare malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract. Most commonly they present with gastrointestinal bleeding and abdominal pain as the main symptoms. Here we present the case of a 52-year-old Greek female patient with GIST neoplasm of the jejunum, who attended the Emergency Department of our Hospital with indigestion and abdominal distention as the only symptoms. This is, to our knowledge, the second GIST tumour of the jejunum ever reported in Greece and the first with atypical symptomatology. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Jejunogastric intussuception presenting as an epigastric mass: A rare case report
AbstractJejunogastric intussusception is a potentially lethal complication of gastric surgery intussusceptions that can occur in any patient who has had a gastrojejunostomy. The diagnostic triad consists of high intestinal obstruction, left hypochondriac mass and hematemesis. On abdominal examination there may be left upper quadrant tenderness and guarding, and occasionally a mass may be felt. Often the mass is concealed by the rib cage and the guarding. Because the lesion is intraluminal, there is no peritoneal irritation and ileus is a late sign. This complication may occur at a variable period after original gastric ope...

Isolated fractures of the sternum and their management
ConclusionIsolated sternal fractures are considered benign injuries with a good prognosis, which require no special treatment except sufficient pain control, particularly in cases where there is no sign of displacement. Admission is required in patients with altered blood tests and abnormal ECG for monitoring for at least 48 hours. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Mucinous carcinoma of the anal canal arising from perianal fistula
ConclusionInflammatory perianal tumour often causes late diagnosis or misdiagnosis of ACC, which is due to frequent perianal abscesses at the external perianal fistula opening. The presence of mucin may increase the index of suspicion for malignancy. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Spilled gallstones following laparoscopic cholecystectomy: A report of two cases
ConclusionThe surgeon should always try to avoid causing a gallbladder perforation during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In case that a perforation occurs, the surgeon should meticulously try to collect all –if possible–the spilled gallstones. Patients should always be aware of this event postoperatively. This must also be documented in the discharge notes, in order to assist the early recognition and treatment of any future complications. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

A comparative study between ultrasonic dissector versus conventional methods in achieving haemostasis in thyroid surgery
ConclusionThe present study shows that, the ultrasonic dissector reduces the operative time, intra operative blood loss, postoperative drainage and length of hospital stay with normal post op serum calcium levels and intact RLN. Therefore, we conclude that the Ultrasonic dissector is as safe and effective tool as a conventional method for haemostasis in thyroid surgery. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Port site hernia in laparoscopic surgery: Way to prevent it
ConclusionThe incidence of PSH in a range of laparoscopic procedures varies. There is a rising incidence of PSH following laparoscopic colorectal, and bariatric surgeries as larger size ports are used quite often in those cases. The incidence of PSH following laparoscopic appendectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be minimized taking the predisposing factors into consideration and by adopting a easier modification of conventional technique. A rare case of intestinal obstruction: Herniation of colon through drain site
We report a case presenting as acute intestinal obstruction, where the hepatic flexure of colon with omentum had been herniated through an open cholecystectomy drain site done nine years back. On emergency laparotomy, contents (hepatic flexure of colon and omentum) were reduced and found viable and parietal gap was closed from inside and reinforced with prolene mesh in preperitoneal space as well. Despite the decreasing use of intraperitoneal drains over the recent years, a multitude of patients had intraperitoneal drainage in former times. These patients face nowadays the risk of drain-site hernias with sometimes even une...

Intersphincteric resection for rectal cancer with pull through delayed anastomosis. An alternative to coloanal anastomosis with covering ileostomy
We present ISR with pull-through delayed anastomosis (PTDA) as a surgical option for the management of elective cases, when standard coloanal anastomosis (CAA) is at greater risk of dehiscence or a covering stoma is refused or dangerous. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Abdominal closure with interrupted ‘X’ sutures prevent burst abdomen better when compared with continuous mass closure: A randomised trial in patients with perforative peritonitis
ConclusionThe closure of midline laparotomy wounds by interrupted mass closure using the x suture technique is a better closure method with a low rate of wound dehiscence, as compared to continuous suturing technique with the same suture material. Anemia, cough and abdominal distension are significant risk factors for abdominal burst. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Lateral internal sphincterotomy under local and spinal anaesthesia for chronic anal fissure: A randomised control trial
ConclusionsLateral internal sphincterotomy is now considered the treatment of choice for anal fissure, because it is a day care surgery, it causes less pain, it has negligible chances of recurrence and wound infection and is more effective in management of chronic anal fissure.
